in the Republican of this morning we Hud
the following paragraphs :
WE CALL FOR THE P«OOK.- We WO IV Dot
present at the Democratic meeting, Monday
night, and consequently have ip) personal
knowledge of what transpired on that occasion.
The President of the meeting. Dr. Arnold, is
reported to have said:
‘•The Savannah Republican said that notone
word could be said against the Platform laid
down by tlm Democratic Convention at Cin
cinnati.'’
Mi. Ward is also reported to have said:
“When the news of our proceedings at Cin
cinnati reached this city the Republican, the
organ of the party In this city, commended tho
pint form, declaring that it coutained nothing
that could he dejected to, by any one, unless it
might be Horace Greeley.”
Now, we have not the slightest objection to
Demcratb orators romancing to their heart's
couteut over the imaginary greatness of their
oamliilnte and the worse than imaginary truth
of Democratic principles; but we do object to
tho Republican being made the hero oi' their
fictions.—'Those gentleman are welcome to our
Hies, and if they call And one sentence in them
to justify, by any violence of interpretation, the
above declarations, we will treat them to a hat
apiece, nnd they may draw on ns Ibr oyster
suppers for three yearn to come. We did not
say it, gentlemen. From the beginning, we be
believed your platform in iq§wy respects “un
wise mid objectionable,” ana so characterised
itatlhctlme. The ouiy plank in it that we
euer approvad was the declaration that the peo
ple lmve a light, when forming theit State
constitution,to regulate their domestic ^Fail's
to suit themselves.
“One sentence”! Give the editors of the
Republican "one sentence” from their Ales "to
justify by any violeuce of interpretation” the
declarations of Messrs. Arnold aud Ward, and
they will treat those gentlemen to a hat a piece,
and oyster suppers for three years.
Mr. Ward was discussing the position of tho
Democratic party upon the question of slavery,
both as expressed in their platform and as
manifested lu the choice of their candidate.
He did not attempt by any violeuce to Interpret
the language of the Republican, but quoted
from the paper the following passage which
concludes an editorial of the 6th of June 1856 :
Sir "THE VOTE WAS NOT TAKEN ON
THE PLATFORM AT THE LAST AC
COUNTS, BUT WE PRESUME IT WILL BE
REA DILY CARRIED, AS WE SEE NOTHING
IN IT THAT ANY MAN—UNLESS IT BE
GREELEY—WOULD BE LIKELY TO OB-

Messrs. Editors, you oau send round the hats

Later from tue Isthmus of Panama.—By
the arrival of tho steamship Granada, we have
(says the Picayune) Aspinwall papers to the
18th iiist., and Panama papers to the 19th. The
Panama Star learns that Mr. Coiwine, the U,
Commissioner, sent to that city to inquirer
into the massacre of Americans on tho 1.5th
April lust, has received instructions from Wash
ington to proceed immediately to Bogota, in
cave Mr. Bowliu, tho U. S. Minister there, does
not arive by the next British steamer from Car-

This shows that the President of the United

By the arrival of the Hteamshlp Granada
last uight, from Aspinwall, via San Juan, we
have San Francisco papers to the 5th Inst.,being
liftcou Uiivh later than we had previously. The
nows is highly Interesting. The Sau Francisco
Livening Bulletin, of the 5th, gives the follow
ing summary:
The great topic of interest throughout tho
entire State continue* to he the proceedings of
the Vigilance Committee of Sau Francisco.
Uelow wo give a short sketch of tho events
which have taken place in this city iu that con
nection. Ucre we may ouly say that, at the
most moderate calculation, nine-tenths of the
people throughout the Statu heartily approve of
the actions of the committee. Tue only class
or u\cn who oppose them are the very persons
struck at—the professional gambler, the cor
rupt politician, the notorious criminal und row
dy, nnd generally their friends the lawyers.
Some few persons, perhaps not comprehending
the necessity of a thorough reform, uud the
dillicuities lu the way of tho committee, are
impatient at the delay that was inevitable;
yet tho general community, however anxious
to see the good work completed, have readily
made every allowance for the position of tho
committee, and believe that iu the end ull will
be right.
But fur the Governor’s "insurrection Pro
clamation,” and subsequently, encournged by
that proclamation, tho stabbing by a Judge of
the Supreme Court of one of the committee’s
police, the immediate work which the commit
tee had to do would have doubtless been loug
accomplished aud their urmed forces disbanded.
As matters stand, it Is understood that the
armed organization of the committee uccd not
last more than a week or two longer.
Tho crops over the whole country have tam
ed out better than was anticipated. Previous
years have shown a larger return per acre, yet
tho additional breadth of grouuu sown this
year makes ample amendments for any defi
ciency iu particular districts.
Several suicides have taken place; among
others, that of G. II. Yates, a writer for the
press. Yates was at one time a writer for tho
New York Herald, •
Nearly half a dozen murders huvo happened
during the 1:1st fortnight. Two murderers,
named Samuel L. Garret, nnd William 8. Kelly,
were executed at Sacramento. Three more,
Nathan Cottle, lieverly Wells and John Wil
liams,* wore eouvicted aud sentenced to death—
tho first at Jackson, the second at Benicia, and
the third lu Calaveras couuty.
Fires have tukeu place at Oaklaud, Mormon
Island and Stockton; the total damage sustain
ed being between $20,000 and $30,000.
Mtuiug and other ousuulities have been about
an average. Dr. Dickerson, mul a young lady,
bis daughter, were drowned while crossing the
Merced river.
On Juue 21st, early iu the uioruiug, John L,
Durkce and others oi the committee, captured
a lot of "law and order” arms from ou board
n small vessel called the Julia, which was bring
ing them from Beuicla to Sau Francisco. The
capture gave rise to a prosecutiou of Durkee for
alleged piracy, uud the nrrest and proceedings
on an application to admit the prisoner to bail,
furnished tho matter of considerable public in
terest during tho past fortnight.
On tho same day, iu the afternoon, the pub
lic of our city was trown into a terrible state of
excitement by uu assault with a bowie-knife,
made by David 8. Terry, Judge of the Supreme
Court, upon Sterling A. Hopkins, as the latter,
a Vigilance Committee mau, was attempting to
arrest ouo Reuben Maloney. The committee
in a few hours afterwards.surrounded in bodies
the armory of the "Blues,” to wliieli Terry and
Maloney had Aed, nnd also the other armories
of the "law and order ’ party, and succeeded
soon alter, aud without bloodshed, in capturing
Terry, Maloney, ull the "law aud order’ arms
in the city, aud making about 100 prisoners,
all of whom wore cenUued In the Committee
rooms. i
Ou the 22d most of the prisoners made the
day before were liberated.
On the same cvenlug, Dan Aldrich, a notori
ous gambler and rowdy, was arrested by the
Vigilanco Committee, uud has siuce been kept
in close couAuemeut.
On tho 20th, Judge Shattuck, of tho Superi
or Court, published an article, taking the posi
tion that Judge Terry, still a prisoner in
tho Vigilance Committee rooms, was to a
great extent to be justified in his attack upon
Hopkins. It gave rise to a considerable dis
cussion.
Outhe morning of tho 23d, one Wm. Ford,
a "law aud order” man, was found shot iu First
street. It raised considerable excitement—but
as Ford did aud is doing well, tho excitement
upon the subject died away. A man by the
name of Wright, charged with having indicted
the wound, was arrested by tho police.
On thoeveniug of tho same day, Mrs. Julia
Dean Ilayuo appeared ibr the first time lu Cal
ifornia, at the Metropolitan theatre, and has
since been playing to full houses.
During the fortnight, Judgo Terry, together
with various others, have been uud still are
prisoners of the Vigilance Committee. The va
cillating condition of Hopkins, who is still very
low, has, during the same time, been a sort of
inverse index of the public excitement in rela
tion to Terry, whose fate is supposed to depend
upon tho issuo of Hopkin’s sickness.
The Vigilance Committee have continued to
retain the full confidence of the people.
On June 30th, the Common Council aud a
number of the municipal officers of the couuty
and city went out of office.
On July 1st, the consolidation act, uuiting the
county and city under one and the same Gov
ernment, &c., went iuto effect—tho Government
devolving for the present upon a temporary
Board of Supervision.

Major Waters’ ^command has returned from
Leon, nnd the result of the trip is somewhat
different from that given by the flrst reports.
Ho only entered the outskirts of Leon, and in
stead of being received us a friend, he was

Dr. Saunders, tho Surgeon of tho expedition,
was tho only person wounded, and luckily his
wound was slight. After a brief but sharp ac

the Mojor concluded it wus best to retire, and
left the town. He waited outside an hour nr

they wished it, but flnding they would not

Granada, July 10,1850.
At 5 o’clock this afternoon Gen* Wlker was
iroclaimed tlirougl^the streets of this city as
;he duly elected President of Nicaragua, All
the troops were assembled in the plaza under
arms, nnd the band attached to headquarters
« a lively air. After this, a dccreo from
lister of Relations, announcing tho result
of the recent elections und proclaiming Gen.
Walker President of Nicaragua, was read in
Spnuish by omo of tho Government officers,
which was followed by three tunas from tho
natives for cl Presidentc, the troops presenting
arms. Tho pvoct-Bsion then moved through tho
principal streets of the city, the same ceremo
ny beiug repented at every corner.
Iu consequence of the troubled state of some
portions of the country, there were only 21,000
votes polled, and of these Walker has received
over U,000 more than two-thirds of the cutiro
vote. Tills result is tho freo and uutrammclcd
expression of tho will of the people of Nicara
gua, not the Army, recollect; for, iu u majority
of the towns uud pueblos, not a soldier was pre
sent, and iu somo cases not within hundreds of
miles, and speaks louder than words could do
t he feeling which animates that people towards
their liberator.
For several days pasta varioty of rumors
have pervaded the city. First we had the news
that Gen. Valle lmd been taken prisoner in the
city of Leon, und that ho was threatened with
instant death. Next came a proclamation from
Col. Mendez, roccutly a grout friend of Wnlker’B,
denouncing the Americans os robbers, Ac., who
were endeavoring to overthrow the prevailing
religion of tho country, aud drivo out the native
population. A gentloinan who arrived from
Lcou, however, stated that Gen. Vnllo was
walking about the streets of Leon, iu no sort of
dungcr, and also brought a secret messago from
Mendez to Walkor, stating that he meant noth
ing by his proclamation, which he uigued when
he was drunk, und that ho wus us strong a
friend ot tho Americana ns ever. Tlieu we had.
tho startling rumor that Leon had been entered
by a force of 3,001) Guatcmaiians, or Chlpinos
ns tho natives call them, and this received some
color from the fact that uight before lust, the
entire ranger t'orco, under Major Waters, was
ordered to march at once in the direction of
Leon.
Tlie facts, as near us 1 liuve been able to get
at them, appear to be, that a force of several
hundred Cuamorristas were a Abort distance
from Leon, und that Rivas, the late President,
was anxious that they should enter, but tho cit
izens of Leon would not consent. They told
Mr. Rivas, in tolerably plain terms, that they

it will tax the utmost euorgles of Walker und
his forces to wage with success. Ho therefore

" From Mexico.
Charivuri q/‘ the French Minister—Spunish
Difficulty—Ministerial Flare up.
Special Correspondence of the Picayune-
Mexico, July 13 1856.
i must commence this letter with an over
ture. at least with a description of a piece of
music recently executed here, aud "positively
the last performance for.tho season.” This was
u charivari to the Frensh Minister by the
Fenchmen in this city. Now I will tell you all
about it, so that you may know how they
mamigo these matters out of France. It seems
there was a meeting at tho Hotel lturbide, in
order to raise funds for tho sufferers by tho late
iuundntion iu France. Count Gabriac, tlie
French Minister, was iuvited to attend nnd pre
side, which he did not. lie was also request
ed to subscribe to the fund, which he did
to the enormous extent of one^huudred francs
—a sum something like one" hundred pica
yunes.
The meeting went off well onough without
him. But whether it wus political disgust, or
the bad liquors of the Restaurant lturbide, for
which It is famous, it was proposed and carried,
crim. com, us Mrs. Mulaprop says, to give Ca-
briuc a touch of their harmouy, to try if he had
an ear for music. Forthwith about two hun
dred ofliis countrymen marched down street,
“two and two, Newgate fashlou,” to bis resi
dence, suitably armed aud equipped according
to law, to do honor to his liberality.
He must have been astonished when they
opened their battery upon him: for they bod a
batterie complete de cuisine, made up of all sorts
of household and kitchen instruments that
would "make noise come.” As tho French na
tion are proverbial for cookiug anything, if you
only givo them the sauco pun, 1 am inclined to
think they did not dishonor the assertion iu this
dish of music which they produced from the
culinary utensils. The novelty of this exhibi
tion bus rather astonished the Aztecs, us it was
something quite new for this country. But as
these people are fond of adopting the Paris
fashions, 1 would not be surprised Irtbey would
try their hand iu tho same veiu upon some of
their own obnoxious dignitaries.
I have to wind up this epistle with some po
litical news, although you might And most of it
hi the papers. The Spanish Minister has at
lost prevailed on this government to officially re
ceive him and recognize him iu his diplomatic
character. U is said the whole dispute is settled
between the two nations to the entire satisfac
tion of everybody; but, as I always predicted,
Mexico would never agree to pay the fraudulent
claims pressed by the Spaniards; nor have
these claims been admitted. Iu fact, had the
SpauisU Minister discovered that bis bluster
would not answer, and therefore became more
moderate in his demands, until be gave up all
thepoiuts in dispute. The quarrel will not be
again renewed, unless the fleet which has re
cently left Spain should anchor in the harbor
of Vera Crbz.
A tremendous flare-up has taken place be
tween Congress and the Cabinet about a speech
by Minister Rosa against toleration of religion.
The Deputies charge Rosa with all kinds of de
ceit and duplicity, ns well us stating as many
historical falsehoods as possible in his discourse
about tho degree of toleratien in Protestant
countries and in France. Rosa declared that
he spoke for the government; in which event
the deputies are afraid that if they establish
toleration of religion in the constitution tho
Executive will not sustain them, aud tho whole
document will be ignored by the country.
The unfortunate speech has produced a split
in the Cabinet, which has led to the Minister of
Fomento, Senor Siliceo, tendering his resigna
tion. Efforts are, however, being made to Tieul
the breach between tho two departments, so
that they may act in harmony, for thebeuoflt
of tho Liberty party. I am apprehensive that
this topic will lead to the most serious misun
derstanding, as neither the Deputies nor Cabi
net are inclined to yield. A ebango in tho
Cabinet will undoubtedly take place unless
things take a turn which I cannot anticipate at
this moment. President C'omonfort believes
that toleration is a hazardous piece of nonsense
at this moment, when tho whole nation is
Catholic, and he is not disposed to make a
chango in the matter which will benellt uo one,
but which limy turn tho tide of public opinion
against the many other important reforms
which ho has effected. You may, therefore,
anticipate important nows on this subject by
the next steamer.

have be«n long kuown to exist, for even in

pecial attention was culled to these gold mines
existing on this tributary of the Mescala.
