Merchants 1 and Planters’ Bank.—We neglected yesterday to call public attention to the 4 per. cent, dividend declared by this Insti tution, as tho result of its find six month’s operations. This speaks well for its manage ment and confirms the opinion which wo have hitherto held, that it Is destined to be one of the most profitable financial institutions of the city, while contributing largely to her business facilities. Gov ernor Raymond, sneeringly refers to a late per «inal controversy between tho Richmond Ac quirer and the Richmond Whig, under the above caption. Tho language of tho two edi tors was, certainly, insulting—and for it one has called the other to an account. Yet wo believe it was not severer than that .in which Horace Grcely of the New York Tribune spoke of Ray. mend of the Times, ns “thejlittle villain.” Nor have wo ever learned that Grcely was culled to answer for it—though Raymond make3 consid. erablo protentlons to chivalry. The same model of decorum, (Groely,) If we recollect rightly, complimented, on ono occa sion, William Cullen Bryant, editor of the Pott, in these choice terms: "You lit villain! You lit!” Tho difference between Southern aud Nor thern editorial courtesy is this: no Southern editor u*c3 such language towards another as that quoted above without holding himself in readiness to give saturation, when demanded; while beyond Mason and Dixon, editors of lie Black Republican stripe (at least) throw at y amount of billingsgate, and when called to oo count laugh at the idea of being held personal ly responible. The re marks of Col Clark seem to us admirably np* propriato to tho times. A truo devotion to the South pervades every liuo j it may bo said brief ly that it contaius nothing which the most nrduut Slates Rights man will not upprove, and noth* tug which tho most devoted lover of the Unlou can coudemu. Tho fo.'lowing is the conclusion of Mr. Clara's cxceltcnt addresst Georgia has ever been nblo to boast a host of statesmen of every political shade, who have louked to her glory aa the durliug object of their humuu nmbitiou. tiucti a State pride maui fests uo want of a due regard for national fame. It may bo asserted as a political truth thin if every State will prove true to her sov ereign obligations, the Federal Government as a legitimate result, will move on steadily aud successfully with nothing to mar tho liarmouy of its beautiful machinery. A reaching alter lutioual honors as or pri mary importance, is iucouhistcul with tho well balanced power of Government—it is a materi al aid to consolidation—its tendency is to cen tralize und strengthen tho Federal Government beyond its constitutional right—it muuuiuc- tuies by hutulrods apologists for unwarrantable nssumptiouof power—ills coutiuually trans forming the creature into the creator, the ser- raut into tho muster. It is a high uud noble ambition to desire to be useful in national positions of houor aud trust, but a national reputatiou is without a safe foun dation unless baaed upon a full appreciation of tbo sacred rights or tho States, uud a con tinued reliance upon the people of the same, who mould politicians for tue public service. Tho history of Georgia’s favorite son is re freshed iu our memories by the daugera of the present times, hut may we nor our children sur vive to teo tiro day when patriotism will com pel us to say aud act as ho once suid: “We have exhausted the urgument, let us stand by our arms.” May wo never have enemies in thp Union to whom honor will dictate his tender tb his country’s foes, of “stout hearts and sharp swordsrather let'pcnco, the Constitution and tho Uuion always prevail, aud tho whole couu- try always feel as he felt when he saluted Lu- foyettc with the toast— “A uniou of all hearts v to>wclcomo tho na tion's guest, a union of nujiwdi to promote Npw Cotton—Two bales of new Cotlon was rertivtid in till, place last week, by Mentis. The vust number of frairiit cws, lOuiiugaad arriving and depart- parting, indicate a prosperous state of ufftirs with that Ruud. Nono of us who do busiue.-s on this side of the Road, can, without difficulty get over to the Bauk to deposit or to pay, such is the rush of Irclghl trains over tho road, Irom - morning till night. It reminds one forcibly of Broadway in New York, and the Omnibuses, where, to avoid being run over by tho latter, one is obliged to wait sometimes an hour ere he can cross that “jammed up” street. We are pleated however, to see this’indication of a pro 'porous business seusou. Return of a Fugitive Slave by the Cap tain of a British Ship.—Tho Wnsacola, Fla Gazette, of the 20th ult., records tho the follow- wing : The Britisli ship Sarah, Capt. Alfred J. Mar tin, wliloli wus tewed to sea on Sunday laHt by tho steamer Cuba, returned ou Tuesday hist, and made signal for u pilot. Upon tho pilot boarding the ship, tho Captain delivered to him a slave which ho fouud concealed on board. This wo consider noble and praiseworthy con duct on tho part of tho Captain, and we wish wc could aay as much for sumo of our Northern taptai/w who have visited this port. There if more danger of the Union boing de stroyed here in Congress, than by the quiet, peaceful and patriotic voters of the country. Senator Peace’s letter, glviug his reasons for supporting Mr. Buchanan for the Presidency, was published In yesterday’s Intelligencer, and read with advldity. A Uieat op a Proverb.—Wo beg to Htato tlmt tho proverb “Lightly como, lightly go,” does not apply to tho gout, uor to one’s mother m-Iaw, nor to the rheumatism, nor to freckles, nor ton light sovereign; for all these plague* come lightly enough, mid yet there fo the greatest difficulty sometimes m gottiug thorn to The American Bonaparte* We read iu tho Paris corresnondeuce of tho Courricr desEtats Unit, of July 17— Apropos of Americans, 1 must tell you a word ubout tiro interesting question of the B Hiupartc Paterson of Baltimore, which haB been recently discussed in the midst of the Imperial Family of France. Princo Napolcou und tho Pt-iuco*} Mathilda ono day observed to the Priuce, their father, that the son bom of the first marriage with Miss Patterson ought not to bo allowed to bear his name, slnco this marri age, contracted with the consent of Napoleon 1., was broken by him, and it could uot bo re garded as legitimate without ailbctiug the legiti macy of tho second union with tho Princess of Wiirtcmburg, their mother. This is tho why the Holy See refused ».t the tlmo to unnull tho marriuge of tho Priuce Je romo and Miss Patterson, and this obstinate re fusal of Pius VII., was the origlual cause of his difficulty with Napoleon I. But the legisla tion of tho French Empire having authorized tho divorce, tho marriuge of Princo Jerome with tho Princess Cutheiino of Wurtemburg has nn incontestiblo legal aud civil voluo. However it may bo, negotiations were entered into with tho young Bouiipmt-PuUorsou, now lloutenunt of dragoous iu tue French Army, to iuducc him to renounce tho first purl of bis name. Ho was offered a rich compensation. The amount sold in the same manner in 1841 was only $2,500,000. The average earning* of females in sewing on this work fo calculated to be about $450 per week. Mean while Mr. Haven, the law partner and bosom friend of the “Model President,” sat by glee fully rubbing his hands und endorsing Duuu.
