Breckenridge in re. tfosue to hit nomination for the Vice Presides*. * BY TBtiHGRAra, Two days later from Europe ARRIVAL OP THE . A abort, .lime aincc,.the* Georgian ^Journal. published aa extract fronfnVpeecli of Mr. Bu* cUaiiau.'oatbo Panama Mbaion, containing the above senteuco, spoken with reference to the South. The same was quoted by Mr. Ward In hia speech at Augusta a few days «rtor its up. pearanco in the Georgian. One of our Know Nothing exchangee, received tUU morning, calls in question the filet that Mr. Buchanan ever used this language. With a view to set. tie the matter, we have referred to Qalesand Seaton’s Register, vo). 2d, pdrt 2d, page 21, 79 —80—and there tind the speech word for word os quoted by us. It wlU do to publish a second time—which wo do, pledging our .character for its accuracy. It is only necessary to premise that when the speech was made, Cuba was threatened by Mexico and Colombia with seizure and aboli* tionism, as she has since been by France and England. Mr. Buchanan said: * Important as this island may be to ua in a commercial, it is still more important in a po* litical view. Prom its position it commands the entrance of the Gulfs, both of Mexico ana Florida. The report of our Committee of For* eign Kela ions truly says, “that the More may be regarded as a fortress at the mouth of the Mississippi.” Any power in possession of this island, even with a small naval force, could hermetically seal the mouth of the Mississippi. Thus the vast agricultural productions of tout valley, which is dratued by tue father of river migut be deprived of thu channel which ua. ture inteuded for tliclr passage. A large por* lion oi the people of the Btate, one ot whose Representatives 1 urn, tind their way to mar ie. t by t ie Mississippi. For this reason Ifcel particularly interested iu this part of the sub ject. Tiie great law of sell-preservation, which is equally binding on individuals and nations commands us, if we cannot obtain possession of this island ourselves, not to sutler it to puss irom Bpam, under whose dominion it wifi be harmless. And yet our Government have nev er eveu protested against its invasion by Mex ico and Colombia. There is still another view of the subject In relation to this isiaud, which demands parti cular attention. Let us for a momeut look at the spectacle which it will present, incase Mexico and Columbia should attempt to revc- lutioaizeit. Have they not always marched under the standard of universal emancipation? Have they not always conquered by proclaim ing liberty to the slave! Iu the present condi tion of the island, what will be tbc probable consequence? A servile war, which, in every age, has been the most barbarous and destruc tive; aud which spares neither age nor sex. R ev enge, urged on by cruelty and ignorance, would desolate the land. The drcadlul scenes NORTH AMERICA New York, Aug. 25. Cuba would ben vast magazine in the vicinity of the South ern States, whose explosion would be danger: oils to their tranquility and peace. Permit me here, Mr. Chairman, for a moment, to speak upon a subject, to which I have never before adverted upon .this floor, and to which I, trust, I may never again .have occasion to ad vert. I mean the subject of slavery. I believe it to be a great political, and a great moral evil. I thank God, my lot has been cast in a State where it does not exist. But while I en tertain the opinions, I know it is an evil at present WITHOUT A REMEDY. 11 has been a curse entailed npon ns by that nation which now makes it a subject of reproach to our institutions. It is, however, one of those moral evils, FROM WHICH IT IS IMPOSSIBLE FOR US TO ESCAPE, WITHOUT THE INTRO DUCTION OF EVILS INFINITELY GREAT ER. TLere are portions of this Union in- which, if you emancipate your slaves, they will become masters. There can be no ihiddle course. Is there any man in this Union who coaid, for one moment, indulge the horrid idea of abolishing slavery, bv the massacre of the high minded, andtbo chivalrous race of men in the South ? I trust there is not one. FOR. MY OWN PART 1 WOULD, WITHOUT HESITATION,BUCKLE ON MY KNAPSACK AND MARCH in company with my friend from Massachusetts (Mr. Everett) IN DE FENCE OF THEIR CAUSE. I am willing to consider slavery as a ques tion entirely domestic jind leave it to those States in which it exists. The constitution of the Uni ted States shall be my rule of conduct upon this subject. I have good reasons to believe, that the honest, but mistaken attempts of phil anthropists, have done much injury so the slaves themselves. These attempts generally reach thj cars of the slave, and, while they in spire him with false hopes of liberty, and thus make him disobedient, and discontented with his condition, they compel the master to use more severity, than would otherwise have been necessary. Atlanta Intelligences—We regret to lose our friend, the true and gifted Howard from the InteUigencer, A nobler spirit does not breathe than his. Thb Cherokee Geobgian.—This excellent paper comes to us enlarged and beautifully printed. We rejoice at the very satisfactory indication of prosperity which it carries on its free. , Alarm op Firbf—The alarm of fire last night about half past ten o’clock, was false. The McMcllin and Granger Fracas.—The select committee on this subject were in session this morning. Tbc testimony elicited com pletely bears out our account of theaffulr, prov ing that Mr. Granger first insulted, and then assaulted Mr. McMulliu, before the latter struck hinu— Wash. Star. The ground of the difficulty was, that Mr. Me- Muffin made some threat that the South would not submit to be ruled by the Black Republi. cans. Granger retorted that the North would compel her by force, and proceeded to make a practical application of bis views, when he got himself considerably battered. The Black Republicans may live to witness a like result in a contest on a larger scale. We recommend to them a little prudence. The Tolland Connty Gazette, published at Rockville, Conn., repudiates Fremont and the Republicans, and come3 out for Buchanan and Breckenridge. Col. J* L. D. Morrison has been nominated by the Democrats of the Eight Congressional dis trict, D1m to fill the vacancy caused by the elec tion of Judge Trumbell (Repub.) to the United States Senate, and Robt. Smith for the next Congress. Bragg’s (Dem.) majority for Governor, in aiLthe ooonties of Morth Carolina hat four, is ISjOOO? being a’gain of 11,000! Clingmsn’s district gives the Democrats 5,000 of this im- mense gain. More about the Chinese Sugar Cane In an editorial last week, wc prognosticated great results from the introduction of the Chi nese Sugar Cane into the Wited States. We mentioned the reception of a bottle of syrup from the cane, forwarded to this city by Gov Hammond, of South Carolina. By the last mail we have the Washington Intelligencer of tho 21st, from which we extract the following article. It will be seen that the estimate of the Intelligencer is even more favorable than our own The Chinese Sugar Cane has come to be the ordinary name for the “Sorgho Sucre,” a most valuable plant of the sugar cane order, aud therefore allied to the maize or Indian corn, but more nearly to the broom-coru. Its culti vation has commenced amongst us, and there is now in Washington more than a acre of it growing luxuriantly and promising a yield of considerably upwaids of a hundred bushels of seed, besides many tons of Btemsand foliage, rich with saccharine fluid and solid food ma terial for horses, neat cattie, and swine. Not only here, but in various and widely dis tant parts of the Union, has trial been made of it, and with uniformly gratifying results. We have read a letter from a farmer in Illinois, who has tested its character, and reports of it in the most favorable manner. Out of a gal lon of the liquid sap iu the stem, which he ex- ircssed by the primitive contrivance of a Toll- ug pin, he obtained, by boiling, a quart of molasses, with very little impurity ami of ap proved taste. The usual proportions of sugar o sap lie between fifteen and twenty per cent., the crystailizabio sugar increasing with tiie decrease of tho latitude. Besides this propor tion of sugar, there is an amount of perhaps itallizaole sup, r - average can be made, and alcohol distilled more cheaply than by any other method. This sap, strange to say, it set with the oxide of tin, will dj’e silk of a beautiful pink. .As a mod plant for stock of all kinds it seems to overtop all that we now possess, fur nishing in lair soiles twenty five tons nor acre of excellent fodder, every bit of which is greedi ly eaten by animals. Tbc seeds, too. by which the plant is propagated—in this unlike and and superior to the sugar cauo of Louisaca, which is raised by cuttings—arc fit for home food : at all events, when ground and made up into cakes, after tho manner of linseed cakes, they supply a good material far fattennig stock. The brush or top, from which these seeds ard taken, is-not without its service, for the plant is a species of broom-corn, and therefore its top, when deprived of seeds, answer well wherewith to manufacture brooms. When the sap, top, seeds, and leaves are taken, leaving only the crushed stem, it still has an ccouomic value paper can be manufactured from it. This valuable addition to our vegetable pro ductions Is originally a native of China, but hss been sedulously cultivated for several years in Southeastern Caflraria, wiiencc it pnssed into France and Algeria, in which last country it comes to great perfection. It would bo hard to its value ler was shown to havp- b urn ‘unifqriqly their sapporter.the latter.uniformly thcir pppqnent. Wo Alloyed then, , we be lleve now, that we wrote the truth and nothing but the truth. The Savannah Republican asserts substantially tbat the oxhlbit was more favorable to Mr. Buc hanan than the verity of history will tu; thorlze. We are glad at any rate that we have doue no wrong to Mr, Fillmore. The Repub lican tactily admits our review of his cours^to be that of impartial justice. Let the public stick a pin here. We charged'that Mr. Fillmore while in Con gress, hi no instance, where the issue was the i nstitutions of the South, gave a vote in their fa vor. We charged that lie uniformiljLvoted with Giddings, Slade and other abolitionists, We charged that be opposed the anne xation of Texas because Texas was a slave State. We charged that he supported the abolition of- slavery in the District of Oolum bia. We charged d that he eucourag ed the general agitation of the slavery question with a view to emancipation We charged that as Prudent, he opposed the acquisition of Cuba. V^Riarged that he signed the fugitive slave law with great relucta nee We charged tbat he denounces the repeal of the Missouri Compromise, by which repeal the territory north of Arkausas is, alter our exclu sion for 30 odd years, opened to the South. ‘Such is Fillmore’s record. The Republican dares not deqg its accnrac y. Aud yet admit ting it to.be such as we have written, its editor does not blush while inviting Georgians to vote for him! Could anything be more demoralizing to Southern political sentiment ? Here is a man who for long years was thoroughly identified with the worst abolitionis ts in Congress, and yet Southern presses support him lor the very Presidency itself! Will not plain people think henceforth that former abolitiutiism is a very venial offence in a candidate^for office? What will the North think—but tliis, that Georgia is quite as willing to vote tor Giddings, Hale Seward or Wade, as for any of the noble band of Northern patriots who have so long and so darelngly opposed those wretches? Now if Buchanan’s Congressional record be no better than that of Fillmore—if it be word for word and letter for letter that of Gid dings,Blade and J. Q. Adams (where that record relates to slavery)—in the name of all that is honorable, let the South repudiate both. Let her wash her handset a contest.in which she can touch only to be defiled—in which she can to the North choose you, Fremont, Fillmore or Buchanan, os you like—we take ueither.—To your tents 0 Israel! But we rejoice that she is not yet reduced to such a dire extremity. We rejoice that one of the candidates for the; Presidency is so thor oughly identified with us iu the maintenance of the constitutional rig hts of the South, that no Southern man will forfeit his self-respect, by v oting for him. Let us rejoice Jhat one of the nominees—a gentleman without reproach—a statesman without^ living superior—opposed the abolition of slavery iu the District of Colum bia, supported the annexation of Texas os a slave State, advocated the fugitive slave law, advocated the acquisition of Texas, Is a friend of the Kansas Bill aud the firm opponent of the restoration of the Missouri Compromise. For the satisfaction of our neighbor, we pro pose to notice some of his otjections inauother issue. We shall show that os we have done Mr. Fillmore no less, we have done Mr. Buchanan no more than simple justice. Important Lndian Treaty.—The triparite treaty, between the United States, and the Creeks and the Seminoles, residing West ot Mississippi, is considered one of the most im portant ever) concluded within the aboriginal tribes. The Senate recently ratified it, with amendments, to which tho delegation in this city, have ussented. it appropriate $899,000, lor which a bill has passed tbe Senate, and awaits the action of tbe House. Tnese Creeks and Seminoles; surrender lands to such Semi noles in Florida as may remove West, while the treaty secures to the last, on tbat condition, certain pecuniary and civil advantages aud per mits them to enjoy their own—a Seminole— government, indepentiy of association with any other tribes, a fadure to obtain which, has been a prominent objection, heretofore, to their immigration. This, it is supposed, will have a tendency to forever quiet Indian disturbances iu Florida, au important consideration hi view of the millions of money expended on account of Indian hostilities in that State.
