Free Soli Merchants.
One of the latest, and probably best paying
trick* of the free soil merchants of tho Northern
oltles, is to invent a report that some body in
the South refuses to trade with them, because
of their abolitionism. The aggrieved firm of
coone publishes a card full of virtuous indig.
nation, protesting very bravely that they do not
“aell their principles with their goods;” and
that they would starve tofore thus debasing
themselves. The thing takes of course. The
abolition and free soil presses "proclaim their
names, and worth, and martrydom far and
wide.—Trade pours in from North and North.
West, and altogether the principles which were
not for sale, are found to bo the most profitable
portion of the capital invested.
One of tho last cards which has met our eyo
is that of Morris L. Hallowell & Co., of Phila
delphia—dated 8th rao, 22d, 1850^-Houest
quakers no doubt—yet not without an eye to
thrift. The Philadelphia North American
gives them the benefit of.un editoral puff,
wanting only four lines of running the length
ot one of ita long columns.
We, unfortunately, cant toast a very exten
sive circulation among freo toilers—Neverthe
less, we have determined to do gratitously what
we can for Morris L. Hullowcll & Co., by call
log attention to their card. They aro donbt
lea worthy the patronage which they seek—
we mean that of the abolitionists.
Interesting Scene In Ike canvass.
In Salem, Ala., at a recent political discos-
Irion between Col, Yancey, for the Democracy,
andOol. Baker, for tho Know Nothings, Col.
Yancey made a most impressive and trium
phant effort.
At the close of Col. Yancey’s speech, six
beautif.il young ladies stept upon the platform

conscious of their design, and gracefully

“As you are probably aware, then Is much
diversity of oplulon bore os to the course to be
pursued, but Rom all I can learn the largcft
majority ore unwilling to make what they sun*
pose to to fair terms with the Main Trunk
Company, and will bo happy to se<r It; organ
ised. As you know, I liuvo been anxious for
that rood, if It could bo builtupontbolluo of
the Brunswick Road, or indeed on any line
that would bring it to this place ; but had giv
en up all hope of accomplishing that object,
until this meeting was called. Our citizens
having generally gone into the contract for
grading the Brunswick Road, will not be In a
condition to toko stock In the Main Trank at
Its organisation, and the general feeling hero
is, that Savannah ought to take aufilelont stock
in that company, in ounce lion with the stock
to bo taken in Decatur and elsewhere, outside
of the counties interested In the contracts with
the Brunswick Company, to organize the com
pany } for tho Brunswick Company to agree
that whenever the company is organized, and
the lino permanently located on or near ita
present Hue, it will mako the necessary re-
leoso, aud for tiro people of these counties then
to como forward and toko stock in the Main
Trank Road, to secure tho additional aid of the
State. It is expected that the people of Sa-
vanuah will subscribe more liberally at thoto-
S ‘lining, because they will reap tho benefit of
is aid in building from tho initial point to tho
line of the Brunswick Road.”
Without going into rrgufhent on the subject^
wo do not hesitate to say that tho writer sug!
gests a fair basis of Compromise— one that
should lie acceptable to ull the parties in
interest. Aud more, it is the only suggestion
which wo havo either scon or heard, that seem,
ed to meet all the existing difficulties. The
counties of Thomas and Lowndes,.(aud perhaps
Clinch and Wore) have taken heavy contracts
and made largo engagements to the Brunswick
Company. While those subsist they are in uo
condition to subscribe to the Main Trunk. Tho
Bruuswick Company on its part is under recip
rocal obligations to tho planters of those coun
tics, and ranjff therefore, with some show of
reason withoid tho “release” until its line is
adopted to Thoraasvilio, as that of the Main
Trank. On the other hand, Decatur county
and this city, bound by no restrictions, are free
*o act without dolay.
They can forthwith make tho subscriptions
necessary to organizo tiro company, and pro
cure tho first instalment of a half million from
the State. Tho company having been organ-
ized, and the line agreed upon to Thomasvillo,
let the Bruuswick company then grant their
release, and that Company,, with Thomas,
Lowndes, Clinch and Ware, can make tho sub.
scriptlon necessary to call forth the State’s
second half million Instalment. It will all
probably, be needed to carry tho road to Bain-
bridge.
Should Decatur county object that her sub
scription (which we put down at $200,000) will
under this arrangement be expended too for
from home, could there not be an understand
ing for tho work to commence simultaneously
at tho Iuitial Point and at Biinbridge ? Thus,
tho Decatur subscription might to applied to
building from Baiubridge toThomasville.
We throw out these remarks in response to
the writer from whom we have quoted, under
a strong conviction that should the spirit of jus
tice aud patriotism which actuates him per
vade all the delegates to Thomasville, the exist
ing dilHcultiesmaybo easily accommodated.
Kansas Affairs.
By the confession of both tho pro and anti-
slavery parties, the late outbreakein Kansas
was the work of the Freesoilers. Lane having
marched several hundred outlaws into tho ter
ritory, they signalized their advent and illus
trated their courage by an attack on the little
town of Frauklin—defended some accounts
say, by 20 others by 80 men.
After a fight of several hours in which
four pro slavery men were wounded, aud one
or more abolitionists killed, the letter captured
the place and plundered it of its arms.
The following appeal has been sent to the
National Kansas Committee, located, we be-
lieve at Chicago. Cautiously as it is worded,
it foreshadows very distinctly the war now
being waged by the free sailers over ther op
ponents.
Georgians! does this appeal suggest nothing
to you ? Your friends ore being butchered by
the abolition hords, marched into the territory,
fbrthat purpose, from the North West—Cun
you do nothing? Are there no men who will
go—is there no more that can be sent to the
relief of tho assailed?
Bnt here Is the appeal:
Lawrence, Kansas, Aug. 13.
To the National Kansas Committee:
Gentlemen—1 he emigrant train which left
Iowa a lew weeks since, has, we understood,
arrived in safety at Topeka. Tho presence ot
so largo a body of men, aud tho prospect o.
still more fallowing in their footsteps, is high
ly encouraging to our people. In other respects
our cauao in tiro State und at Wushingto?
fleems to brighten. We would gladly await tht
complete organization and operation of youi
scheme and the sure operations of other cau
ses for our preservation, but a pressing emer
gency compelis us to anticipate them, aud we
appeal by a special messenger to you for mort
promptnud otllciciit aid in men, arms, ammuni
tion and provisions.
\iTbe contest is upon ns, aud instant action
atone can save our people from dastruc-
tlou. It may seem to you a premature move
ment, but wc are forced in it. The detail*
will have to explain to you by the bearer,
f csq., who is fully acquainted witu
all the facts, and upon whose statements you
may fully rely.
The lending facts of the case wo will briefly
state. Wo have threo statements upon the
most reliable authority, and no hearsay re
pot
riiuce tho attack upon Lawrence of May 21st
inst., with tho executions of a few skirmishes,
mutters in the Territory have remained in com
parative quiet. Tho presence of the Govern
ment troops which is secured to impose a check
upon tho designs of our enemies has served
them with an opportunity to mako more ex
tensive preparations. Provisions, arms, totb
guns and cannon and umunitiou have been
severally introduced into nud stored in differ-
ent parts of tho Territory, bauds of from 60
to 200 men each from Missouri nud tho Sontii
arc fortifying themselves into a continuous
line through tho settled portions of the Terri-
>ory, in readiness for n simultaneous desconl
by night upon our scattered and defenceless
people.
Fully satisfied that tills extreme danger im
pended over us as wo appealed to tho military
to afl’ord us protection by tho dispersion oi
these armed bands. This lias been refused us
in the cose of a band of upwards of one hun
dred men encamped about six miles from this
place, on Washington creek. We must have
immediate help. The hoards from Missouri
und other parts of the South will bo in upon
us. We shall stand by oar homes to tie last.
To the neighboring Free States, and to the
Nationnl Coramitteo, we look for roller. Shull
we not have it? The battle, as you are al
ready aware, is not for Kansas aiono, but foi
freedom of tho cntlro North. Suffer us not,
then, we entreat you, to be overwhelmed for
want of timely aid. Wo will do our duty. Ii
the reports our friends bring us bo true, the
North is alive to ita danger and duty, and will
stand by ns.
Commending our cause to tho immediate at
tention and to the Almighty, wo rcmuJn yours,
