ZU difference between tho Congressional
record of Mr. Buchanan and Mr. Fillmore is
about this: while the former in no instanct
gave a vote in opposition to the institutions oi
the South, the latter in no instance gave a
v6te in their favor. While Buchanan general
lj voted on questions touching the institution
1 of slavery with Olay, Calhoun, William R
King and J. M. Berrien, Fillmore with quite
at much uniformity, on the same questions
voted with' Giddings3Iado and other abolition-
fats. Was it tho annexation of Texas Fill
more opposed, Buchanan advocated it Fil
more opposed it because Texas was a slav«
State—Buchauun advocated it as a raeaus oi
strengthening aud protecting the South.
Was It, the abolition of sluvery in tho Dis
trict of Columbia ? Fillmore supported, Buch
anan resisted it. Was it the general agitu-
tation of the slavery question, with u view 1
emancipation ? Fillmore eucouruged—Buchan
an denounced.
Coming down to the period since either o
them was in Congress, they arc separated it
every case when called upon to take positloi
on questions affecting the South by tho suim
well defined line - or should we not say, by ti»
gome broad,deep gulf?
Mr. Buchauan, as Secretary of State, at
tempted to optaln Cuba from Spain—an object
of the highest importance to tho South. Mr
Fillmore, as President, took grounds against
the acquisition of Cuba—undoubtedly becau**
slavery exists there. The fugitive slave bil
bod.no more earnest advocate anddefendei
than Buchanan. Fillmore, though prohibited
by the principles of his party from vetoing it
signed it with greut reluctance. The repeal o
the odious Missouri restriction, by which tin
South was prohibited from colouring any terri
tory north of the northern, line of Arkansas—
that repeal, so unaniraonsly sustained by tin
South, and by conservative men everywhere—
ao bitterly denounced by abolitionists und fret-
•oilers—is not more warmly sustained by tin
South than by Buchanan, is not more bitterly
. denounced by the abolitionists than by Fil,
mow.

How Whiskey Tastes.
Tho editor of the Boston Olive Branch says
mat a recent session of one of the Western
JonfereuceH of the Methodist Episcopal Church
•joutli, the venerable Bishop aoule, iu making
<oiue observation ou ttie subject of Temperance,
is represented as having said :
"Though 1 have passed the seventy fifth year
if my age, I have not yet learned how whisky
..isles!” True to the letter. We were preseut
m the occasion, aud hoard, ns tho old people
lived to, "with ray owu ears,” the statement as
t fell from the lips of that emiucut minister oi
‘io cross of Christ.
here it should be known aud well under-
y all concerned, that as the legitimate
. esult of this rigid udhereuce to the total dis
use of ardent spirits, the Bishop, though now
verging towards the eightieth year of his age,
is possessed of a much larger share of physical
energy aud muscular strength than usually
/.ills to the lot of meii iu the prime of life; nor
cun his most iutimute aud intelligent friends
uid acquaintances perceive the slightestubate
iiieut in the herculean force und vigor of his
meutal faculties. He stands us uprightly, wulks
is briskly, eats as heartily, sleeps as soundly,
u ilk* as fluently, preaches as powerfully, prays
oa fervently, and feels as deeply and intensely
lurtue interest aud prosperity of the church, as
•io did forty years ago.
In addition to his iucessant and arduous la-
•mrs, within the limits oftlie several States and
Territories of this great confederacy, for ‘the
luM; half ceutury, ho lias twice crossed the At
lantic, performed tho tour of Europe, and
preached the glad tidings of salvation to ad
miring thousands in nearly ail the principal
towns aud cities oftbo British Empire.
Besides this, within the last tweuty-four
months ho bos twice visited California, super
intended both sessions oftlie Puciflc Conference,
aud traveled extensively through many portions
of that far-distant land, proclaiming "Jesus,
ind him crucillcd,” ns tho only hope pf a
wretched and ruined world, to the vast crowds
that everywhere flocked to hear him, in tho
wide wustes, as in the cities full.
But not having yet filled up tho measure of his
obligations to tho church und the world, ho is
oven now holding himself in readiness to pay
California n third visit, should no one of the
yonnger members of tho Episcopal College find
t convenient to enter upon the performance of
this important mission.
Such, in brief, is a rough outline sketch of
the physical, intellectual, mural power and effi
ciency of the man—and the only man— who
can in truth say, at the udvunced ago of seven-
ty.Uve years, "1 hi
