Editor,:—One ot the things most to be desired In a business community Is reliable statements of tbe supply, demand, and prices, of staple articles la the market. So many In terests depend upon such facts that they should be at nearly approached as possible. I am led to these remarks by the comments of tbe R«- publiean on the article ot Bagging In Savan nah. That paper states first the stock at 200 bates, then proceeds .to say that In these figures it was mistaken by an Individual, whereas to truth tbe stock la one thousand. Now for a paper which cfaimisuch credit as does tbe Re publican to matters pertaining to commerce, I am surprised that it: should be in anyway de ceived In a matter, tbe entire truth ot which, la so easily ascertained, and still more am I sur* prised that it should be deceived, to that ex tent as to first, from on Individual obtain a statement altogether correct and reliable, then oven with insult to the source or Its in forma- ton .repudiate; It, and Insert, ta a plao® which asks the confidence of all dealers' ta the city and State, a statement which, by the use of the slightest precaution, It could have discovered was wholly untrue and unfounded. I am interested ta correct reports oftbe market and prices current, and I wish so important au error to be corrected. The lint statement, therefore, fixing the stock at two hundred bales, was correct. This, of course, only contemplated the quantity In Jlrjf handt, •i that held by retailers, under such clreum- stanccs, to never counted. But to enable the editor of tbe Republican in his corrected state ment, to come within one hundred per cent, of the troth, we will count every bale held (as near at It can be arrived et) by tbe retail and irholo- •ale merchants, and the stock will net exceed four hundred bales—certainly net five hundred. Bo much for the Republican'r assurance that R will not again be led Into error. The article of Bsgging Is one about which the commercial pulse Is feverish enough at best, »n4 a discrepancy like this In tho report of a small market like Bavannsh will lead consum ers to question whether there bo not a sohome to keep up prices for tbs benefit of speculators, for If the figures are to variable boro what, ob- •Itytagtbe proportion, must tho difference la the great markets of tbe world be? i » Mkbohant. Many of the different compa nies, who only expected to remain a few days, and were unprepared for a regular compaign, returned to their homes to make such prepara tion as was required, and desiga coming back to prosecute the war with greater determina- ttonand boldness. Immediately upon the separation of this body of men, the abolitionists, driven to ex tremityby hunger, were necessarily compeUed to make some bold attack, upon anything that offered. It seems the returning Bauta Fe trains were the most convenient, and on tbe day before yesterday, they surrounded and took Wm. Mc.Kinney r s train of twenty wagons, their oxen, provisions and wagons. Bent’s and one or two orther trains were close iq the rear of Me. Kinney’s, and it Is feared they shared the same fate. One or two outward bound trains are afraid to leave the line, as these robbing parties, have threatened all, and say that they will even come into the State and destroy Westport, New Bant* Fe, and this place.
