ekhibited no new feature; quotations steady, de

The demoeratfo party are in the field, fully and
completely organized; they are baltliug against
sectionalism, under the broad flag of the
Union. Their entire State ticket is composed
of national men, from Governor down. In each
congressional district they liuvo a sound na
tional man in the field; ana in every county in
the State they are supporting men for the Leg
islature who ore sound to the core. “Buchanan
and the Union,” is thoir cry; “ Fremont and
Freedom,” is the wntch-wora of the fusionists.
Several of the candidates ou the fusion ticket
spread out before their audience a map of the
united States, with a black lino drawn uround
the slave States. The South and her institu
tions are denounced in unmeasured terms.
On the 15th I attended a democratic meet
ing in Washington, Davis county in this State.
It was addressed by John L. Robinson, for
mer member of Congress from the eastern
portion of the State. He was attentively lis
tened to and made one of the most effective
speeches that I ever listened to.
There was a large audienco, and scarcely a
E erson moved from 1 their seat during a two
ours’ speech. He accorded to Mr. Fillmore a
high character for exalted patriotism and de
votion to the Union, and regretted thut the
contest was not betweon him uud Mr. Bucbapuu
instead of Fremont. He maintained that the
election of Fremont would inevitably produce a
disunion of the States; that he wus a sectional
candidate, and looked alone to the North for
ipport; that, it elected, his Cabinet, as well
i Foreign Ministers, would be selected from
the North; that no Southern man possessed ol
self-respect would accept ofllce under him.
He asked if it could be expected that the

answer was that in first hands there were about
two hundred bales, and same time last year
2000 to (2500) twenty-five hundred. Now, if
the “individual” intended to have included the
quantity in tbe bands of retailers, he would
have put the latter at over threo thousand—the
former four to five hundred. This report, given
at random, will be sustained by tbree-fonrtbs of
those engaged in the Bagging trade.

Daniel Spcden, residing on Henrietta street
between Light aud Charles, was Hhot in
the shoulder. Tt is thought the ball has passed
downwnrds in to his stomach, the physiciun be
ing unable to find it. Relies in great agony,
and it is thought his injuries wi lpr ve fatu!.
Frederick Hammond, a young man residing on
[OtitgolUtiry street, between Charles and
Light,received some twenty buckshot in ditter-
ent parts of his body. Ills injuries are not
dangerous.
Michael Marshall received two wounds—one
in tho leg another in his throat—neither of
which, however, are deemed dangerous.
A young man named Gulley, residing on
Montgomery street, near Light, received a pain-
fill bail wound in one of his legs.
A majority of those wounded were not parti
cipating in the itftVay, but were attracted to the
vicinity of the melee hy the firing. The wound
ed were attended, some at the southern station
house. and pthers at their residences, by Drs.
Benson, Brown, Johnson, Baltzell, Dunbar and
Hungefford, who were prompt in their attend-
ance, nnd did nil in their power for the relief of
the sufferers
During the cveniug 'officers Hough, Vansaut,
Favier and Allen, arrested 1 John Carter and
John Ilnrtlovo, two of the wouuded, upon the
cUi rco of firing muskets, and each upon the
suspicion of having fired the shot which killed
Hare. An examination took place before Jus
tice Webb, at the Southern Police Station,
Frederick Pinkney, Enq., being in attendance
on the part of the State. Testimony was ad
duced as to their both having fired In the di
rection of tho murdered man. Thomas Micou
also testified to John Hartlove having fired the
shot which struck him in tho tace. They were
both fully committed to answer at court.

your letter and invitation before this time, but
numerous engagements have hindered me.

Fatal Fight at a Political Meeting,
St. Louis Sept.ll.—We have inteligence here
to day that at a Democratic meeting held at
Hemiyville in Iudiana a tight took place, in
which one person by the name of Rader was
killed and another by the name of Hardin seri
ously wounded and a third slightly wounded.
Shipwreck.—Schr. Eliza which arrived at
New Voik Wednesday last from Antigua report*
August Hist lat. 28 11, long. 67 50 Fell in with
the wreck of schooner D. Lester of Ellsworth,
Cunt. Ryder from Jacksonville, for Kingston
and took from her C’apt. R., his wife and five
men all in an exhausted condition and brought
them to New York. The D. Lester wua cap
sized in a hurricane on the 20th of August, and
the parties rescued had been eleven days on
the wreck subsisting on raw medt and a little
rain water. Ali are now doing well.

Terrible Riot—One Man Kilted and
Home Twenty Wounded.
A most terrible riot took place yesterday af
ternoon about 6 o’clock, on Light-street, in the
vicinity of Warren-street, which resulted in tbe
instantly killiug of one man, and the wounding
of some twenty others, a number of whom arc
supposed to be mortally injured. The particu
lars of this rad affair, so far us we could ascer
tain them amid the attendant excitement, from
the statements of parties living upon the street
and at tbe spot where the riot occurred, was
that about four o’clock in the afternoon, as the
American clubs known as the Rip Raps and
Wampauoags, were passing the corner ot Hen
rietta and Light-streeta some boys on tho cor
ner had some words with them, when one iu
tbe line struck him and knocked him down,
upon which another of tbe party threw a brick
into the line. A number of them here left the
line In pursuit of this boy, who ran and took
refuge m the 17th ward house of James Clark,
on the corner of Light and Little Church street,
and upon the pursuers entering a fight, took
place between.them and some parties in the
bar-room, which resulted in the party in pur
suit of the boy being driven off, when the whole
procession moved off At about 0 o’clock they
again returned, when the'riot which resulted
so serlotuly took place; tho statements as to
who made toe attack being so contradictory
that we could not reliably learn from whence ft
proceeded. In an instant thereafter a rapid
discharge of fire arms took place from both

telligence reached this place yesterday of the
loss of tho steamer Florida, at or near St. .Jo*

who arrived here yesterday, iu an open boat,
from St. Andrews, the schooner Visitor to
they belonged having gone ashore. The intel
ligence is somewhat vague and unsatisfactory
os to particulars, but we are happy to learn that
no lives wore lost. We have waited for the ar*
rival of the eastern mail this morning hoping to
learn tho particulars of this sad disaster, but as
lias been the case for the last threo weeks, we
have no mail.
Since the above was put in type we received
the following note from Mr. Gregory Vnieatra,
Purser of the Florida, who arrivea 1 ** ’

“ I left the steamship Florida m Saturday
moruiug last, at 10 o’clock, with three of our
passengers—Messrs. Page and Smith and Capt.

rested by Marshal Manry and Deputy Mar
shal Seollick, on charges of forgery and swind
ling. After bis arrest he made an attempt to
swallow forged drafts to the amount or six
thousand dollars, but was prevented by a
prompt squeeze on the throat by tiie Marshal
while Mr. Seollick drew the papers from his
mouth.
- lie is a Spaniard, well educated, aud a most
accomplished swindler, and mauy sufferers in
New Orleans will rqjoice at his Incarceration.
His deteteion and arrest, on a very slight
