Democratic Meeting Last Night.
The preliminary meeting last night argues
well for the success of the friends of Hr Bu
chanan and Breckinridge at our ensuing muni
cipal election. It was both numerous and en
thusiastic. Eloquent and stlring.addrcssca wen
made by Messrs. Arnold, Ward and Htllen.
After which the large auditory reluctantly ad
journed.
Mr. Ketch urn's Letter.
The Democntic organs appear to think they
have found a precious morsel In the letter of
Hiram Ketchnm of New Tork, in which he
states that Hr. Fillmom was always opposed
to the extension of slavery to free territory,
and has never changed hla views on that subject.
Now, allowing that those an the abstract opin
ions and feelings of Hr. FUlmom, will these
Democratic gentlemen point us to one solitary
man of any party at the North whoiaiu/avor
of extending slavery to free territory f Does
not every sensible man at the South know that
it cannot be done—Savannah Republican.
The difference between the oppoaitton of
Northern Buchanan and Northern Fillmom
men to the extension of slavery la just the diffe
rence between two friends of Temperance, one
of whom would not and the ether of whom
would prohibit the sale of spirits by the enact-
ment of a Maine Liquor Law. Is that nothing?
The views of the Northern supporters of both
these candidates prefer the system of hireling
labor which exists in their owu States to that
of skive labor which exists in ours. They would
rather Bee the Territories grow Into States with-
; out slavery. But while Fillmore's friends would
bring about this result by clapping theWilmot
Proviso or a Missouri restriction upon them.
/Northern Democrats denounce any extraneous
Interference. They say, grant that slavery la
'• a bad thing, Congress has no power over it
either in the States or Territories. We repeat
that practically it Is all the difference between
him who would prevent men froih drinking by
the enactment of the Main Llqnor law, and him
who thoogb a friend of temperance repudiates
enohtymnical interference with the rights of
the people.
Hr. Webster, (whosaid hla sentiments and
those of Hr. Fillmore were the same), declared
that he was In favor of applying the Wilmot
Proviso to every foot of Territory from which
slavery wen not excluded by law of God. That
is what Mr. Fillmore means by opposition to
the extension oi slavery. Hence he denounces
tho repeal of the Missouri Compromise, which
prohibited slavery west or Missouri, and Is
gndcnbtedly In favor of its re-enactment, so
astorenewtbe prohibition.
On the other band Northern Demoeratsas
they opposed the Willmot Provisso so
they oppose the reenactment of the Missouri
Compromise. Their doctrine is noninterven.
Eon: in other words if the people of the terri
tories desire slavery, their position Isfri them
have it—whatever be lts evils. Is it doubtful to
which of these classes of Northern poilticlata
the South should give her confidence and co
operation

The Crops of 1*96.

Edilore Georgian fr Journal t
Gxntlbmsn—The commercial year having
Just closed, attention is now being directed to
tho one upon which we have now entered.
1 propose, tfaccopuulo to you, to submit the
result of my personal observation, extensive
Inquiry, and information procured from every
available and reliable source, respecting the
crop of 1896.
In your lane of the 5tb Instant, yon say :
"From present appearances there will ho u
falling off in the next cotton crop, and tram the
Information we can gain upon the BubJect, the
corn crop will fall short of an average one ;
hence, foil prices may bo expected the ensuing
year.” Tou are correct in the statement that
both cot# and cotton crops are not average ones
1 cannot give you tho amount of tho deficien
oy, in either crop, as compared with tbut o*
1»56; but I can submit such facts us will show
that, that deficiency will be large In both
oreps.
1 propose, at present, to speak of the cum
crop, reserving for a foture communication,
whatl may have to say about the cotton crop.
ton are aware that the cotton region extends
over a small breadth of land, compared with
hat in which corn, (l mean matte—Indian
com) is cultivated. In speaking, therefore, ol
the corn crop, I mean to be understood as allu
ding ton muoh more comprehensive field, than
when I speak of the cotton crop.
I regard the year 1865,aa one of the most
fkvorable for forming of any I have ever no
ticed. The crop of com was over an average
one, by at least one-fourth, perhaps one-third
In troth I have never observed a year in which
aU the craps were so good. Ontbeotherhand,
I never noticed a year so disastrous to the
forming interests, as tbatof 1856. This is at*
tribntaUe principally to the long continued and
exceedingly severe drouth; which though not
universal bas been general. While some Sums
have yielded tolerably good crops others have
been entire failures.
The wheat crop of 1866, was a tolerable, I
mean an average one, but corn, peas, potatoes
and cates have fallen far below anything I have
ever noticed before j so mnob so, that lam safe
in saying that not mere than half an average
crop of these articles will be realised. And
although there is some, perhaps much of the
crop of 1855 on hand, there is not enough of It
to make np the deficiency; therefore, there
will be a large demand for com during the
coming summer, and it must sell at a high
price.
The consequence of the decrease of the
crop will be realized in the loss of stock. From
the abundance of the crop of 1855, farmers in
the cotton region began to raise large stocks of
hogs; these must again be reduced by the
scarcity of com that will be experienced the
present commercial year. And other kinds of
stock, such as horses and mules will suflbr
greatly.
Iam, very respectfully, yours,Ac.,
Howell Cobb.
I hasten to answeryour kind note received
this morning, and to say that there Js,si
a shadow of foundation for the statements con
tained In the slip you scutm*. I never had an
Interview with Fremont except ut his own
secklug or tbatof hi SBpeciul friends. I never
madeanyoficrtohlmof anything for myseir
or others. He never expressed any censure
for the repeal of the Missouri Compromise in
my hearing. All that Is gammon from beglu-
nine to end. I never saw nlm until I met him
in New York and, afters short acquaintance
considered him very light metal (notwltlietand-
ing Mariposa) and extremely ill Informed up
on all political subjects. I broke off all com
munication with him on political subjects, be
cause I saw that the influences which govern
ed him were abolition. These are the sim
ple facts; and the only thing about it which
worries me is to think that the Interviews of
gentlemen, in the confidence or privacy, should
» made tho subject of newspaper discussion,
and misrepresented, too, for the purpose of
'ring something of effbet to the fables they
e filled with. JounB. Floyo.

In tho exuberance of Its misdirected zeal tor
Fremont, you may have perceived, is endeavor
ing to enlist the religious or church element of
the North in his favor. It Is certainly refresh
ing, in these degenerate days to seo such a jour
nal exercising a pious guardianship, over the
Christian ohurches, and we , doubt not, Its la
bor of love will be duly appreciated.
Among the other religious demonstrations
enumerated by the Herald, is the Lutherans. It
sets down the number of ministers at 10,000;
congregations 1, 043 ; communicants 335,000.
And this religious denomination ol the Herald
kindly transfers, en maeee, molens nolent, to
Fremont 1
Lest any one be deceived by the statement
altow me to state, that the main body of the
Lutheran ehnrch in the United States is enter
ed iu good old Pennsylvania, justly styled the
Keyafone of the' Aroh. I have some acquaint
ance with its clergy and mernhersship, haring
been connected with the church thirty years,
and I speak it as my conviction, based on
actual knowledge, that of the Lutheran cleri

coming Presidential election will vote for
James, Buchanan and John 0. Breckinridge,
andagainst the sectional, disorganizing, strife,

fact on which yon may rely. So much for

the declaration of their devotion to the Consti

the repeal of the Missouri Compromise to be a
breach of faith on the part of the South, and
tkat peace and unity could not again exlat

It also declared that tbechai

that the emancipation of the slave would tend

clares slavery to be pregnant with difficulty by

Job Printing Promptly, Neatly and
Cheaply Done.
The public iu general; and our Democratic
frienda in particular, will remember that there

Our faciiities’enable us to execute every de
