intense heat to which U bad been exposed. On open
ing the Safe, tbe contents were found undisturbed,
and to the same order and condition as when placed
there, excepts slight discoloration to the projecting
ends ofa few papers, ud the backs of ooe or two of
the books, caused by tbe steam generated to the
Safe, while at its greatest heat
The Safe aad contents, as it came from the ruins,
may still be seen, to the possesion of Mr. Thomas,
at tne Gas Works. A large assortment of these cele
brated Safes always on hand.and for sale by

of Teachers.
Tbe French language wiil be taught ud spoken
by a Parisian iady, residing in the Tamily.
The Lulin, German, t-panishand Italian languages
will receive due attention. ’
Tbe Natural sciences will be taught, with the aid
of a large ud expensive apparatus.
The Musical Department will be under the charge
of a lady eminenUy qualified to fill the situation; ud
all preferring a male teacher ou the Ptano or to

An Ordinance to increase the salary of the Health
Officer of the City of Bavannah, ud fix his fees

Wherras, from the increased commerce of the
Port of Bavannah the duties of tbe Health Officer
are greatly increased, ud tbe salary has not been
increaced during the last thirty years :
Sec. 1. Be it ordslned by the Mayor ud Alder
men of the City of 8avannah ud the Hamleta there
of to Council as einbied, ud it is hereby ordained
by the muthcrity of the same, That from ud after
the irassagu of this Ordinance the salary of the
Health Officer be at tbe rate of five hundred dol
lars.
Sec. 2. Be It further ordained by tbe Mayor ud
Aldermen of tbe City of Savannah and the Hamleta
thereof In Council assembled, ud it Is hereby or
dained by authority of the same, That the fees of
tho Health Officer (which shall be paid by the
owner, master, or consignee of uy vessel) shall
be as follows:
For boarding uy vessel lying at tbe quarantine
ground, at Fort Jackson, two cents a ton up to 600
tons, beyond which no additional fee shall be
charged In ca*e of a visit at night the feee charged
•halt oe double the preceedtog; ud ail expense*
incurred for boarding uy vessel shall be paid by
tbe Health Officer, except that the city will rornish
a quarantine bo*’.
For visiting ud inspecting a vessel which has
been subjected to quarantine, ud giving a permit
to come up to the city, five dollars.
Sec. 3. ife it farther ordained by the authority
aforesaid. That in case It shall be deemed necessary
by the Health Officer to send a patient to the Pest
House from the vests!, It shall be done by the
vessel’a boat, or at th* expense of the owner, mas-
ter or consignee of such vessel, under a penalty, to
case of failure or refusal, of not exceeding ooe hun
dred dollars, to be collected to th* usual manner as
prescribed bv- rrdtosnee.
