The Meaner Niagara of the Colllngwood line waa burned near Port Washington, on Lake Michigan, last evening. One hundred llvct aro reported lost. The Hon. John 1). Maey of Wisconsin la sup posed to lio among tho lost. The Captain (Miller) waa eavod. No further partloulars bavo yet come to hand. One bad a ring marked l. D. (1. Tho Niagara had a very large freight, and there was not a pound saved. Capb F. 8. Miller and the cvcjv were saved. The propeller Illinois aud several sail vessels picked up a targe number of the passengers. Tho Hon. John 11. Mtcy Is reported to usvo been on hoard the Niagara. The receipts at this port since the 1st of Sep* teinber, amount to 0,078 bulbs, against 12,672 bales during tho some period last year, and the receipts ut all the Southern ports, amount to 03.117 bulu*, und show a decrease of 03,332 bates to the same ditto in 1855. Duriug the wholp of last week the •demand for our staple was pretty good, aud iu our lost review we quoted au improvement of } a i cent por lb. Good Middling was worth, on Batur- day. the 20th inst, 12 cents per lb. This demand was continued at tho opeuiug of the present week, und with Increased re ceipts business expanded. The sales on Mouday were 108, on Tuesday 302, and on Wednesday 500 bales. On Thurs* day morning, reports of a heavy white frost in ditlbrent sections of tho State were received, living a tresli impulse to business, and since iiat time the cotton market lias been quite ac tive and animated, and prices further improved about 4 ceut per lb. The sales on Thursduy were 1550 bales, yes* terday 870 bulea, and to-day 700 bales, making tho total sales ol the week 4,240 bales, os fol lows:—110 Imles at 05*10 ceuts; Oat 93; 18 at 10; 54 nt 10A? 75 ut 10 j; 250 at 11; 30 at 11$ j ; fuu ut 113; 2r LATER. Chicago, Thursduy, Sept. 25, 1850. The Niagara left Colllngwood ut 2 r. m., on Mouday, with between 160 and 175 passeugers. Twenty-five left the boat Sheboygan,where she arrived at 21*. ii. yesterday. When two hours from Sheboygan the passen gers discovered lire issuing from tho ongine room, and in a few minutes the whole cubin was Inflames. The wildest consternation fol lowed. The boats were lowered and filled, hut capsined, excepting one containing twenty pas sengers. Numbers jumped overbourd and were instantly drowued. The steamer Traveller was ten miles distant when tho fire was discovered, but saved thirty persons. The propeller Illinois, bound down, also picked up about thirty and lauded them at Sheboygan. A life boat nt Poit Washington rescued twenty persons. Their names have not been received. George Haley, clerk of the Niagara, is sup posed to bo lost, I’rolmbly fifty or sixty lives aro lost in all. There is a rumor in tho city this aftemoou, that the fire was tho work of uu in cendiary. It is stated that immediately after the fire was discovered a keg of noWdcr cxplod' ed, blowing the flames in every aircctiou. Tho first engineer was not ou board. There is no telegraph to Port Washington or —leboygan, and wo liave consequently to wait for a full Ust of those lost by the burning of tho Niagara. Indeed, we may uot get it at' all, as the possengcr list was burned on board the boat. What the Young Cadets of West Point Think.—A quiet vote for tho Presidency was taken by the two or three linndred Cauets, u few days ago, which resulted as follows: For Fremont, 7; for Fillmore 40; Buchanan all the remainder. Droves of cattle have been driven over at this point. Good Nswb.-A cargo of rails, 1150 tons, for tho East Tenncsseo Road is allout for Uti Point, and its arrival daily expected. It w i t as soon as landed, be taken through to Bristol. We presumo othir cargoes will shortly follow We earnestly hope sonic 25 miles of that Road may be in operation on the Eastern end by Christmas, thus reducing Stage travel to Knox ville, to 60 miles. Tho Uostcrn Courior (Fillmoro paper) urges a cordial rccoption of the President without regard to party, should he pass through that city. ( Wenthcr and Crops. In tho Long Staple we have heard of no transactions yet. RICE.—Tile Rice market continues buoyant, with demand fully up to tho receipts, which, for the week just ended, amount to M64 tierces. Prices continue full, and raugc from 634 u $44 per 100 lbs.—the bulk of the transactions ut $41 a $43. Three lots of new Rico wero offered this week, and sold, at$44 a $4|. Exports 01 the week, 071 tierces. Ill ROUGH RICE, nothing lias been yet done. Two parcels, received duriug the week, were forwarded to tbe mills BAGGING AN1) BALE ROPE.—There is nut much demand tor either of these articles, aud prices rule about the same us last'reported. Twenty bales of Gunny Cloth sold this morning at 204 cents. FLOUR.—There was some exjort dernuud for this article during the past week, but the prices oil'ered were so low tfiut tho market was not much relieved by its existence. Somo 500 or GUO bids, however, were tuken off at abopt $74 for good super. Wo roust coutiuuo to quote tbe market dull and depressed, witli figures still receding. At the close of business to-day, super, could be purchased in small lots at $7 a 74 per bid. Extra and family brandsare held at h glier figures, but their value is altogether nominal nt present. Receipts of the week 1,625 barrels. WHEAT.—Tho market la stagnant for want of stock to operate with. Wc hear of only one transaction in the early part of the week, when 1,000 bushels red sold at the Railroad Depot at $1 45, considered equal to $1.47 from store. The exports of Wheat from this port since the 1st instant, amount to 34,247 bushels against 144,234 bHshels lor the corresponding period last year, being n decrease of 109,987 bushels. Received duriug the past week 680 bushels. CORN.—The receipts by water for jho past week liuvif been 3,800 bushels, aud by railroad 4,400 bushels. Tho former was sold at 70, 71 a 72 cents, aud the latter was stored for higher prices. It is held at 89 a 85 cents, including COFFEE is quiet, with a few sales of Rio in retail way nt 11 a lUc. MOLASSES.—About 100 bbls. of N. Orleans were disposed of this week at 50 cents per gallon. - BACON.—This article continues, neglected, and tbe murket has becomo more depressed du ring tho past week. We hear of some small sales of Sides at 10£ cents, which is now au outside figure, aud some sales of Shoulders at 94 a 9^ cents. 50 cirnks Palmetto Hams wire sold at 15c. per pound. FREIGHTS.—Wo have no foreign rates yet to oiler. Coastwise freights are improving, and an engagement to New York was effected to day at 25 ceuts per 100 pounds for Cotton. We quote Cotton, to New York, 20 a 16 cents per 100 pouuds; Rice 75 a $1 per tierce. To Boston Cotton 4 cent per pound, and Ulcc 1 dollar per tierce.
