A letter from Orange Springs says as far heard srom the ag gregate democratic vote in Marion county is about as was expected. Perry is a few votes ahead of his ticket and all the candidates con siderably ahead of the opposition. . Magnified Votes. A great deal has been said about the outrage ous sin of changing tho law of the eleotion. It Is said that it disfranchises to many of our weolthtesl and most respectable citizens. The persons who have raised this cry are governed by small influences. If they pass np Bull street and see the house of some prominent man (either by reason of his wealth or business con nections) closed, and see him represented by a dozen or more sleek aud well-fed servants lounging about his premises, it has a powerful influence on the mind. His absence is magni fied into a thousand votes lost, when in fact it Is only one. Like the ohivalrous and redoubta ble Don Quixote and the windmills, the ab sentees become electoral giants in the air. But persons would be astonished to know what little effect in numerical strength their loss exercises on the actual population. Upon the imagination, ’Us true, the effect la powerful, but In sober reality it Is nothing. For every man of that class who is home lu December, and absent in October,m are freed from two floating individuals, who are here in December and not In October.*' This in itself would be sufficient to recommend U. A story i elated of his serene highness Haroun Alraschid, Caliph of Bagdad, is here apposito, •bowing the effect of truo Philosophy on Groat Minds. Upon finding that his beautifol consort Rad overrun the royal palace with cats, whose purring in the day time, and caterwauUug at night, disturbed the repose of the Defender of the Faithfol,he issued a royal edict saying thatEO cats should come within a league of the palace. This answered very well for some time, but tho fata presuming on thp absence of their ancient foos, made free with the apartments designed for the use of tho oxalted prince. As the C-allph was sleeping one night, with the greatest toe, with which the creator has b'eised cither Caliph or man, exposed to the air a Rat of nnoaual dimensions made freo with that extremity of his serene Highness. Up jumped Haroun Alraschid—Zobeido ’screamed* Indignation filled tho royal breast. Philosophy however came to his old, and gave that instruc tive lesson, which teaches us to choose the les ser of two evlls-kHo restored the cats. The same philosophy will teach ns, that iu tills world where perfection is not, the surest course is a choice between two evils. Fellow Countrymen t—To. you I respect- fully beg to address myself, influenced 1 assure you by no interested motive, nor presumption ofMlr tohsequence, but there are times that it behooves every man to speak, and such a time s the present. To the result of the present eled. tiohjis far as my Interest' is cuucerued, Um personally Indifferent, nor do I entertalu any prejudices Inimical to the well-being of my fel low citizens of the know nptUlug party. In adverse fortune I caule among them, aud here I found u lutppy home for which as in duty boimd my rincerest gratitude Is due. Thciiu* portauce of the principles involved lu the coni, lag issue, alone, have influenced tne in 4he few remarks that t offer for your consideration, sen elbto that you are already well Instructed in the principles that should guide your touree In this eventful election. To one point only would I particularly direct your attention.. Let no pe cuniary, or unworthy motive; ito promptings or avarice influence your vote. Should bo any of you iudignaut that that opinion should be en tertained, reflecting upon- the honor or any citizen, say that hereon it is gratuitous and un necessary for me to speak. My anxiety to re. move the remotest cuuso that would tend to our defeat U the ouly apology that I can offer. In referbucu therefore to the subject of my remarks l would say, that had you chosen to avail yourselves of such dishonorable means to replinish your pockets, you might have accept ed the Saxon bribe iu the land of yonr nativity You who then would spurn such base and per fldious overtures, and rather than sully you* 1 honour,or character, have da red the dangers of the dashing foam In order to inhale air mure free, in this land of your ndoptlon—will you, i say, who have proved yourselves capable of making such sacriflees-who would have poured forth the lust drop of blood at the Shrine nf< liberty, now sell your honor, your principles your nationality for thirty pieces of silver? May I hope that there Is none of my country-’ men so base; such a traitor to the noble princi ples which you avow, as to lie guilty of so vile an act ? If there be, let me tell them unhesi tatingly, it will be tho seal of their reprobation and Infamy—that it gill bring shame and re proach upon the land of their birth. Let me ask that man if lie thinks it will benefit him ? Yes he will meet with the same reward us his prototype Judas, the first link to drag him into eternal perdition. A more honorable course presents itself. The spacious field of enterprise is open to all who may choose to adopt the worthiest means of honest* industry and frugality to obtain a liveli hood; these are the means, and these alope which H persevorod in, will eventually lead to success. Not that i would have any of you to vote con. trary to the dictates of his conscience, if you sincerely believe In the integrity and justice of Know Nothing principles or imy othor party, by all means vote accordingly. Yet it would, indeed, seem strange to mo that there could be found an alien who could enter tain such sentiments. Can you forget the.at tempt they have made upon yon and ypor privi leges? The attempts they have mafie-^aye, that they would make again lind they the op portunity—to degrade you to the condition of the slave; to proscribo you forever on account of that religion more sacred to you than life? Heed not auy plausible words or arguments that they may use 1—any professions iff friend ship they may make! Tell them who would Beck to beguile you to your ruin, in tho words of the fated Roman, not that you regard their generosity and friendship less, but that you valuo your owu houor and independence more! Rally, then, on Monday, aronnd tho standard of Democracy, whose principles are as broad cast and liberal as the glorious Constitution under which you live—os the starry vault-o tlm heavens that encircle you. Stand by It champions who are so nobly fighting yonr bat tles throughout the country, to protect you in your civil and religions liberty, give them a oonvinciug proof, on Monday, that you are uot insensible nor unworthy of their services; and my word for it, that tho approbation of your own conscience will be your reward; that a. contrary course will bring a stigma upon your unmc which will attach to it long after the present excitement has passed away.
