The Democratic majority in Washington is not less than 75. Calhoun is said to have gone for the Democrats. The same is said of Gads, den, and of Walton. Know Nothing majority in Holmes is said to be 23. The Stato is Democratic beyond question and Walker will bo beuteu for Governor. The Know Nothings give it up The Know Nothing’s profess to have re. liable information from Georgia of great changes in favor of Fillmoro, saying a few weeks ago the Democrats were willing to bet on 15 to 20,000 majority for Buck, but now tbe dout expect to carry the State by over 5 or 6000 votes.fiTiiis is done to establish tho fact if possible that Buck is rapidly losing ground and tho chances are more in favor of Fillmore even at tho South. Tho centennial celebration of the advent of printing Into New Hampshire, took place at. Portsmouth, N.H., Monday. The programme consisted of a procession, including military, firemen and numerous clvio societies, followed by au address by A. P. Peaboby, Esq., editor of tho North American Review. It ex ceeds tlmt of any former year, savo perhaps that of 1846. More goods havo been -sold here by thp United States Marshal than for any like period.lu the history of the Key. The proper ty now iu the hands of tbe Admiralty Court aud subject to salvage is valued at more than $275,000. Damaged cargo has been sold to the extent of over $90,000, and large quantities yet renisiu in'the holds of vessels upon tho reef. Tho wreckers are niakiug every exertion to get up the goods, but owing to the great depth of water iu which the ships are sunk but little cuu be done until the weather clears up aud the water becomes clear. The damage to the government works has been considerable. At Collins’ patches the first tier of piles, and the platform, erected for the accommodation of tho mechuuics und for the prosecution of the work of oracling the Iron Pile Light House, liuve been destroyed. The loss is $20,000. it will delay tiie completion of the house perhaps a year. At Fort Taylor the gale wu* severe aud sumo property was lost. A nun-beacon upon the middle ground, near Suud Key, was lost. Several buoys in tbo harbor and on the reef were carried off. The transport schooner running between this city uud Fort Jeflbrson ran upon the Garden Key Shoals and became u total los& This city suf fered very llllle. Some trees uud fences prus- tuated were the extent of tho damage* Tho packet ship Isaac Albertan, lost on the Washerwoman Shoal the 28th of Aug., hud a most valuable ourgo. It is said that the vessel and cargo are iusured for $450,000. The wreck ers have done up a.large portion of the goods, but immense quantities yet remain undisturbed, und it is doubtful whether many more cau be saved. The Marshal has sold over $80,000, and probably $15,000 of such goods us cau be re shipped are in warehouse. Sales are occur ring as the goods are brought down. Nothing of value has been saved from the French bark Marie. The cargo of sugars Is a total loss. 9 fho vessels ashore abovo Cape Florida have not been disturbed by'our wreckers. Their names are unknown. The head boards of the ship Diadem aud the Hcbr. Wild Pigeon have been picked up, and goods, trunks, &c., have been washed ashore at various points along the coaBt. The U. S. cutter Sea Drift is dispatched to day 4>y the Marshal to search for some specie said to have been taken from trunks picked up near Key Biscayne. The ship (French) Don Juan, Capt. Gilliaud, ran ashore on the 8th inst. near Indian Key and was badly injured. She was from Mu- tanzas and bouud to Havre. She has had a new main mast placed in her und now being bove down. Her bottom iB being repaired. Her expenses will be heavy. Salvage not yet arranged. The Bchr. Eliza Firk, drlveu into this harbor iu the gale of the 28th, has beensold for $2,100. The cargo will bo forwarded to Charleston in tho brig Huntress. Tho ship Humphrey Purrlugton, from New York for New Orleaus ran upon the Dllta Shoal the 3d inst. She was obliged to take as sistance from the wreckers, who got her off and received for their services $4,000. The ship was not much injured and proceeded on her voyage. The bark Joseph Halo, Capt. Merrill, from Philadelphia (or for New Orleans with a valua ble cargo ran upon tho Fowey Rocks tbe night of the 1st and was obliged to take aid from the schr. Joshua Skinner, Capt. Rengolds. She was got afloat the 3d inst., leaking very badly and was brought into this harbor tho 4th. Sho is beiug discharged and will be repaired. Tho sales of cargo of Br. hark Emigrant, Capt. Brown, damaged while ashore in the gale of the 28th, amount to $9,082. The dry por tion of the cotton will be reshipped ^ Liver pool in the new ship S. R. Mallory. Tiie President at Portsmouth.—Ports mouth, Oct. 9.—The President accompanied by the Mayor and other gontlemen visited the steamer Wabash this afternoon and was ro-^ ceived with the usual salute. He Is expected to sail in the steam frigate Wabash this after noon, for Washington. The party given to the President at Commo dore Newtorus residonce last evening was a brilliant affair. SECOND DISPATCH. Portsmouth, Oct. 9.—The steam frigate Wa bash sailed at 5 o’clock this afternoon with President Pierce on board. There was an im mense crowd of Persons to witness his depart ure. He was most loudly cheered. His recep tion here has been of the most cordial and grat ifying character. From Lake Superior.—-Buffalo. Oct. 10.— Advices from Ontonagon, Lake Superior, to the 20th inst. says: The mining business is ac tive, yielding largely. A storm which occurr ed on the 18th uit. was tho greater known for years. No damage to the shinning or other property has been reported. The storm ex tended to Maijuette, where five iuciies of snow tell, and the pier at Eagle river was destroyed Washington, Oct. 9.—A meeting was held in tho City Hall this evening for the purpose of making arrangements for the reception of the President on his return to the Capitol. Tho Mayor presided, and a committee of six was appointed to make the necessary arrangements. Springfield, Oct. 9.—The Bachanan, Fill more, and Whig parties coalesced hero to-day upon the county and Congressional nominations. Wm. C. Fowler, a hanker Whig, was nominat ed for Congress. Bt. Louta, Oct. 9.—The steamer Genoa sunk in the Missouri river, near Nebraska city, on he 30th. The Iobs is $18,000 and the insurance $14,000. Farther by the Niagara. Halifax, Oct 0.—The letters by the Niagara quote the cottou market as entirely unchanged for fair qualities, while in tbo middling grades an advance of 1-16 to 1-8 had been established in the week. The range for Middling Orleans was 6J a 7Jd, and for Middling Mobile and Up lands 6 6-16 a 0}d. Tho bnsiness doing was « on speculation, and the impression was e market would soon advance a penny (two cents) ,per pound. The receipts from the United States were quite small. In flour, wheat and corn there had been no variation since Tuesday, the market being dull at the decline advised per Anglo-Saxon and Arago. Trade at Manchester is represented iu the let ters aa rather moro active, and on both goods varus a slight improvement had been obtained. The Persia made a fine run out—the trip having .occupied but 9 days and 22 hours from port to port* From ‘New Orleans.—New Orleans; Oct. Or-Owing to tho stormy weather very little was done in cotton today, ami sales only reached 1500 balps. Prices unchanged. Whis ky 32c.; other articles of groceries unchanged. Attempt to Mon A Judge. The Onsvlllo (Ga.) Standard, of Thursday last says: “We learn that a crowd of men undertook to mob Judge Brown, In court. In Marietta, last week, on account of his having fined sev eral of them for disorder in the coiqt house. The marshal and officers of the court being present came to his relief. He thud aiid Im prisoned several ofthei mobittH to tho extent of the law.” Chicago, Oct. 8.—Private advices reoived here from Kansas mention a rumor that Gov ernor Robinson was about to convene tiie Free State legislature. One hundred und ten Free State men arrested under Harvey, at Hickory Point, have all been committed on tho cbnrgo of murder. Every stage and conveyance into the Terri tory is crowded with settlers returning to their claims, from which they were driven by Lane. Governor Geary is discharging his duty with fo arless energy. Burned to Death.—Last Sunday evening, as Mr. Boddemeyer, with a friend, was pro ceeding to his farm, near Buffalo, New York, in a two horse wagon, the horjjes took fright ut the buruiug woods, and ran off, capsizing tiie wagon, and throwing the two men out. Mr. Bfiddemeyer’s body was found soon afterwards dreadfully burned, but tiie other man escaped Serious Charge.—New York, Oct. 10.— A broker named Charles R Auntingtou, lias been charged with forgeries ou Messrs. Phelps, Dodge & Co., to the amount of $30,000. Mr. Thomas G. Allen,the Republican candi date for Congress, in the First District ol Philadelphia, has declined, in favor of Mr. Edward C. Knight, the Americau nominee. Fatal Steamboat Explosion.—Watertown N. Y..Oct. 9.—The steamer Wm. Lawrence burst her boiler on Black River, near Lyons Falls, ou Saturday lust. Capt. Whipple was fatally injured. The eugiuoer.Uad his shoulder kroken, aud was badly scalded, and several others were severely injured.
