The City election in which so much iaterost was felt must be our excuse. On the pro •ent occasion, there was more dependent upon it than usually. It was the first held in the State of Georgia, and it would not have done to let the Metropolis, send forth anything but a thecring and confident voico to the Democracy of that State. Oar country friends will all take part in our rejoicing over a victory, hotly con tested, and well earned. The majority was considerable, but is not by a great deal what will be polled for Buchanan and Breckinridge in November, Many persons who voted with our opponents on Monday last are open supporters of tho Demo cratic nominees. At uu early hour iu the day, iu fuel as soon ns thu pulls weie opened, tho first, Third Fourth, Bcveutli, Twelfth Seventeenth, Eighteenth Nineteenth and Twentieth Wards, according to preconcerted urrungements, were infested by large crowds of armed lvuow Nothing bullies, tho windows blocked up, and tliuu commenced those acts which havo resulted in the murder ing of a largo number of persons, while the wouuded cuuuot us yet be enumerated. Their plun of operations iu the .oruier part of the duy was to seize aud examine the tickets of voters, and if found to bo as they desired, they were crowded through; but it Democratic, woe to the holder, us lie wus ut once lorccd out, uud reaching tho outside of the crowd, was knocked down, aud iu many instances ins pockets rilled. This was not confined' to torelgn citizens, but in numerous cases to which 1 Was au cyo wituets, thescjoutragesweio perpetrated upon natives of Baltimore, merchants, mem bers of tho bar, physicians, Ac., without dis crimination ; even tho heads ul those silvered with age, and who had spent a life.lime in aiding to build up the city, uud make her what sho wus—(one ol tho luirest in our hind—to-day bear the marks ol tho demon bunds wiuen struck them down. Had they have confined their villainy thus to the wuids of which luey held entire possession, the vote in liio remain ing wards would beyond doubt, have rescued our city irom the lvuow Nothing rule winch, for two years past, has so disgraced it. Uui>u, Drunk .with liquor furnisned them by the mana gers or this work—the respectable Know Noth ings uud their candidates—und their thirstnq lor more blood, iu largo crowds they sulliei forth with the must demoutuo yells, to those wards which hud up to that time been compa ratively quiet, uud going from one to otucr attacked, beat, shot, aud drove from the pulis, all who could bo rocoguized us Democrats— native born citizens us well us loreigu ones. Of one of these assaults iu thu 12th ward, thu Sun a reliable neutral sheet, thus speaks: it was a most surprising spectacle lor a civ ilized community, and such wus tho dungeruiu, aud unsafe uspect of the atVuir, Unit the stores aud houses generally in the neighlxiriiood on sovenil squares closed up their shutters auu doors. Many peaceful citizens stood iuokiug on at a distance from diifereuc points, deploring the disgraceful spectacle, andtiie absence ui all means lor staying its progress. Numerous muskets, shot guns und biuiuleibusses wciu boldly carried, loaded, fired, und re-hred, time und again, iu the same hands, while every one of tho parties almost taking positions muuu around the Lcxiiigtou Market liou.-e, that were not thus armed, nourished a revolver. These arms wero deliberately leveled at supposed en emies and fired, and even when one man lay dead, aud another was writhing Irom what may bo u mortal wound in the apothecary shop, at the corner of Lexington and Kutuw streets, parties to tho riot, standing behind the corner of thu building, one alter another, to pick oil' their mau lVouta distance of half u square or more. Alter shooting down ami driving oft' all who attempted tho maintenance u. their rights this crowd of fiends started so the Eighth, n. Kveu though drunk aud intul with oxeitt nient, these bravos, who hud ruthlessly murdered unofleud- iug citizens iu the upper section of tne city, who wero unarmed, quailed beloro the Eighth warders ns soon as they found them prepared in defence, and disgracetuUy retreated m search of tlnse unprepared for resistance* The question will naturally occur to you— where were the police? The only answer to he made is—they were aiding and abetting these outlaws, ns Iu no ease did they muko arrests, except where a Democrat was shot down, and with the blood streaming from Ids wounds, with curses and cull's would they drag him to the station-houses. In all Justice, tho Know Noth ing officials are responsible tor tho blood spilt yesterday, and for the eternal iu'auiy winch must rest upon Baltimore iu consequence. Du ring the day tho mayor was waited upon bj many of our first citizens, uud in ono e;r-e by a violent Know Nothing military commander and urged to order out tho m.lui.i uud check tho murderous outrages of their hireling buii.es but, uo, to all Uieir appeals lie would only re ply that the Democrats would do the same if they possessed the power, uud that be would not interfere. Throughout last night the city was iu a state of the wildest excitement, as these gauga mint ed from one end of it to the other without mo lestation or attempted hindrance, knocking down every Democrat with whom they met, storming Democratic quarters, public houses and even private dwellings. The scene ol blood shed and riot which ensued cannot be describ ed accurately it even imagined. Nor has order yet bceu restored, ua at this writing armed gangs are openly parading the streets with their weapous exposed, assaulting and firing upon ail who nre known us not having contribut ed to the fund which secured Uieir services, and to which no Know Nothing officer or business man of their detestable party, has dared to de cline contributing. What they claim as a victory, Ims thus been obtained. Their majority in round numbers is 1,500. in tho 1st Ward 000 Democratic, votes were kept out of the ballot-box in this way. Thua counting for them all the illegal votes they deposited, their candidate is elected, with a majority of 700 votes against him, which are known to bo legal. At every turn wo arc met with the question— where is thing to end ? Where;cun it end but in our city losing her former fair character, ami her business interests being sacrificed; and iu view of tho fact, if many of our business men not only having winked at these outrage.;, but furnished funds to secure their perpetration, renders it but justice that fiiidh should be the case, until they have thus been forced to aid in destroying the monster into which they havo aided in heating lire, bet their interests thus sailer, and they will then aid in securing to ull our citizens equal rights.
