Slavery has been reestablished in Nicaragua President of the A* & G. Road. It scums to be the impression of some that the coummisslonera who meet at MillidgevUle on Wednesday next will make an election of President of the Atlantic and Gulf Road. This is a mistake. If the aommlssioners shall report to tho Governor a subscription of $600,000 he will suhstribe $600,000 on the part of the State, and order an election of Directors, which election however can only take place after thirty days notice. Tho Directors elect the President as will be seen from the 3rd section of the charter. Sec. 3. That so soon as tho sum of one mil lion one hundred thousand dollars or upwards shall have been subscribed, aa provided In the second section of this act, it shall be tbednty of the Governor of the State, for the timo be* ing, to order an election for nine Directors, which election shall be held in Milledgville, un der the direction of the commissioners or any 5 or more of them, after not less than 30 days no tice; and the stockholders shall vote in person or by proxy. The directors so elected shall elect a President from their number and snob other officers os they may deem expedient, and shall hold their , offices for one year, and until their successors are elected. Decatur Subscription.—From C. J. Man* nerlyn, Esq., one of the commissioners named in the charter of the Atlantic and Gulf Road, we learn that Decatur county has made a sub scription of $100,000 to that enterprize. We do not donbt bnt that the remaining $100,000, necessary for the organization of the company will be forthcoming when the commissioners meet. Across the Satllla. Our Brunswick neighbors had a lively time last Thursday, in celebrating the completion ol the bridge across the Satllla. An excursion was made from Brunswick to the western bank ol that river, where a large company enjoyed a sumptuous feast, and listened to speeches from Messrs. Long, Sohlattcr, Cochran, and others. The Brunswick Herald, from which we learn these facts, says : While the cars wero on tho west bank of the river, several biles of wool, cotton and hides, aud other produce from the counties of Berrien and l/)wndes, wero placed on one of them to transported with us to Brunswick. This is tho beginning of a mighty current of trade that Is to pour itself into our beautiful city, whether the railroad that penetrates Southern Georgh shall ba called Brunswick & Florida or Main Trunk ltoud. Never was there • assembled so large a number of the people as is now in Atlanta. What It will amount to, on to-morrow, we can only imagine. Last night, no arranglnieuta had been made for speaklug. nut bo large was the attendance of the people from abroad, that it was determined other wise. Col. J. A. Calhoun, of South Carolina, addressed an overflowing audience at the City Hall. He w«a followed by Col. Wright, of Newnan; Geo. M. HUIver, Esq., of Walton co.; Col. Moses, of Columbus, Ga. f and Col. L. J. Glenn, of this place. The greatest enthusiasm prevails. To day the people were addressed at tho stand near the Trout House, by Col. B. O. Yan cey, of this place; Col. T. P. Saflbld, of Morgan the Democratic Elector in the Seventh District; an<\ Col. Russel,Troup of county. The Speaking w to bo resumed in the afternoon, alter the Georgia Railroad and Western & Atlantic Rail- toad train arrives. We do not pretend to estimate tbo numbers present, save by the rule of the Fillmore paity if they bad live thousand voters from a dis tance at their mass meeting In this place, wo have ten thousand; if they had ten, we have twenty thousand, already here. To night, after the speaking, we are to have k grand Torch Light Procession. To-morrow Is to be the great day. They will not probably aflfect tho result a dozen votes. If these figures are correct, and we have no doubt that they approximate very closely to correctness, the majority of Perry (Democrat) for Governor, is 533 over Walkor (Know No thing); that for Hawkins (Dem.) for Congress, 904 over Baker. The true test of the strength of the pa rties will be found in the Congression al, rather than iu the Gubernatorial vote. Gov* ernor Perry, though a gentleman of high char acter, and by bis flrmneBs and nuftinching devotion to Southern Rights, peculiarly suited for bis post In these troublous times,’was, when nominated, little known in the State, and has been entirely prevented by ill health from en gaging in the canvass. Precisely tbo reverse ol this was the fact in relation to his oppo nent. On the other hand, the candidates for Con gross canvassed the State equally, with, we should think, the balance of personal populari ty in favor of Mr. Baker. And yet he is beat en by nearly 1QQQ votes. For the office of Congressman, no man in Florida has superior qualifications to those of Judge Hawkins, tho member elect. Foremost among these we count his devotion to the South; next, Ula ability to serve her, and third (per haps it should have been second) hisunqualling; heroism. Though a New Yorker by birth, tho South will have no more dauntless defender in the next Congress than George 8. Hawkins. We congratulate him on his splendid triumph. In 1 the Taylor campaign Florida was the banner State of Whiggery, giving a larger proportion al majority tbun any other. In the Pierce can vass of 1862, BIr. Maxwell beat Mr. Cabell for Congress only 82. Now Hawkins carries the Stato by nearly 1,000. Tbo majority for Buchanan in November will not probably fall below that given to Taylor in 1848. Tho Baltimore American, of last Friday, con* tains the particulars of a collision iu Chesu* pcake Bay, off Woolftrap Light, on Tuesday last, between the steamer Monmouth, from that port for York river, and the brig Wiudwurd, from the same port for New Orleans. Tho uc- cident took place about 6 o'clock in the moru- iug. Tho American says: The brig struck her midships, carrying uwuy the iurbourd wheel and wheel house, and dis placing the shait from its position, besides causing her to leak budiy. Tito brig was also iujmed, and her captain was oblidged to put her into Norfolk for repairs. Fiuding that lie could not proceed, Captain Dausey, of the Monmouth, cut his uuchors with u view to wait for tho Gladiator, by which lie hoped to be towed to Now Point. That steamer passed aud she was heard, but could not bo seen, but once for a few minutes, in consequence of the thickness ol the utmosphere. The boat lay at uuchor all day, and towards oveuiug a gale urose, und it wus soon discovered that site; was settliug. The crew at once began to construct rafts us the only hope of safety, and before the steam er Louisiana, from-Norfolk,on her upward trip,' reached her, there was nothing visible hut her upper works, and tho sea was breaking over her. Captain Russell determined to do every thing possible tor the sufferers, aud descrylug a raft with a number of persons on it, dispatched two of ills boats to their rescue. They uad not proceeded far when ouu of them swamped, but the other kept up, and wus not long iu saving eleven persous which the raft contained. Two other rafts were overtaken, one of which held two persons, and tho other one, all of whom were safely placed on deck of the Louisiana and properly cared for. Two or three *f those rescued wero in an exhausted condition, and but for tho timely succor uffbrdgd them would have perished. Learning that Ca] taiu Hewctt, of tue schooner Adn, of this port, was ou a raft, and that eiglijipersons were left on board the Monmouth, Captain Russell ran up to her, but uo person was A to be seen, and there are fours to be cutcrtaiued that all perished. When the stcumbout was struck, tbo concussion was so great that her smoko pipe was thrown down, so that all hope, if her machinery was not in jured, for working her to laud, was lost. But who shall scalq that dizzy cliff, which Mark Stuart, the sailor, who lmd been at tho storming of many ports, once attempted in vain! What’s the use, what’s tiro use 0’ on’y puir human means! We have no power but iu prayer! And many knelt down, fathers and mithers, thinking 0’ tbeir aine wee bairns. Only last Sabbath was my wee wc’an babtlzcd in the name o’the Either, Soon and Howly Ghost; and on uttering these words her whole sonl seemed to be invigorated; she flew off through the breaks and over the huge stones— up—up—up—faster than ever huntsman ran in to the death; j perhaps as a goat playing among the precipices—no stop, no stay—she knew not that she drew her breath. Beneath bet feet Providence fastened every Iooso stone, and to her hands strengthened every root. The boat weut down, after lying at anchor for thir ty eight hours.
