OOLETHOBF MEDICAL CoLLEOE OT BaVAN- mah—The preliminary course of lectures com menced yesterday in the above institution, by a lecture bom Prof. Harvey L. Byrd, on the General Modus Operand! of Medicines. We le irn that these lectures will be continued every day, Saturdays and Sundays excepted: until the opening of the regular course, which will commence on the first Monday in Novem ber. A class of several young gentlemen were present, who have alreaey arrived in the city, toavail themselves of the advantages of the preliminary course, and others are daily ex pected. We are also informed that theso lectures will bo devoted to topic! and instruction, which will not be embraced in the regular course, and are free to all students of medicine, physicians and lovers of science generally. Hawkins ahead, 558. The same counties show the election of 24 Democrats to tho House, and 11 Know Noth ings, beings clear gain to the Democrats of six members; and also the election, including those holding over, of 12 Democratic Senators and 7 Know Nothings—a gain of ono to tho Democrats e Tho House is composed of 45 members, tho Senate of 21—so that tho Demo crats have already majorities in both branches. Of. the remaining 7 House members to hear from, the Democrats have in all prob ability elected 5, and the two other Senators, giving them 29 in tho House to 16 opposition; 14 in the Senate to 7 opposition, leaving to tho Democracy on joint ballot 20 maiprity! Takingthe result all in all, it is one of the most splendid Democratic tri umphs ever achieved in Florida. Oar candi date for Governor was a quiet, modest planter, scarcely known beyond his own county, who was'opposed by a well known politician of great personal popularity and extensive ac. quaintance throughout the State. Besides this disadvantage under which we labored, we as a party had to bear all tho responsibility of the ad valorem tax law and the Increase of taxation imposed by it, while many other things, acted against ns, connected with the management of the State lands and the railroad system. To have emerged from the straggle with securing a Democratic Governor, a Democratic Cod. gressman, a Democratic Legislature, and a Democratic U.S. Senator, In.certain prospect, is a triumph of which tho Democracy of Flori da may feel proud, entitling us ss it does to the meed, bom our political friends elsewhere, of "well done.” After such a result, i need not assure you that we shall give Buchanan our electoral vote in November by a handsome ma jority. I happen to know that many of those who voted against us on the 8th Inst, will be with us in November. I congratulate you on the result of your charter election. When the news was received here last nigbt, it sent a thrill of joy through the breasts of all Democrats, as U was thoylrsl booming gun from Georgia, and indicated glorious triumph for Buchanan and the Consti tution next month. Yours, E. [Our correspondent, who writes from the seat of government, probably gives bis report from the official returns. If he is correct, the Democratic majority In Florida is leas than our intelligence from otherquartera makes. It. Still it is a majority. Tho counties not included in his report are Hernando, Hillsboro, Orange, Sumpter, Levy, Manatee, Brevard and Dale- We have, through other sources, intelligence from all but the three last, showing a majority in these of 179 for Perry, and 188 for Hawkins. Add these to the report of our Tallahassee cor respondent, and they give Perry a majority of 383, and Hawkins a majority of 724. The coun ties not beard from will not perbapB vary the result a dozen. The rotes of all three are prob ably less than 100,] Total .80 4 Here we have 80 electoral votes for Buchanan, 20 for Fremont,00 for Fillmore. We should not won der it there are many “moreof the same sort.’’ Tho writer, who is a gentleman of high Intelli gence and social position, bus been known for his life-long opposition to Democracy. He writes; “You will bo vet)' much surprised, and per haps very Bgreeably surprised, to find that at last I am going for old Buck. I am now a Democratdyedlnthewool. 1 can’t stand these infernal Black Republicans. I am satisfied that the Democratic party lathe only conserva tive party, who go for the Union and the South Uefore the black rascals get into power, wo must all be united at the South, and nail tbe the Sag to the mast for a Southern confedera cy.” Savannah Medical Colleob.—Yesterday, at twelve oc'lok, Prof. R. D. Arnold delivered the first lecture of the preliminary course in tbe above institution. At one o'clock Prof. Joseph Jones delivered a lecture on Comparative Anatomy. Prof. J. is well qualified in every respect to discharge tbe laborious duties of a teacher, and tbe College has been very fortunate in securing him as one of the Faculty. A largo audience was in attendance at tho College yesterday to hear th leetures. Quite a number of students have mastrlculated, and others are expected daily. The regular course of lectures will commence the first Monday in November. The public generally are invited to attend tho preliminary lectures. Loss of the Steamship City of Savannah- By a telegraphic despatch received yesterday by Messrs. Brigham, Kelly & C'o.,agents of tho above named steamer, we learn that she foun dered at sea, 100 miles north of Cape Henry Captain Pascal and the crew were taken into Norfolk. Tho City of Savannah cleared from this port on tho 12th Inst, with the following cargo: 719 bales upland cotton, 50 casks rlco, 380 box es copper ore, 35 bales domestics, 13 bales feathers, 3 bales gensing, 10 bbls. whisky, and snrrdry merchandize. The vessel and cargo are supposed to bo insured. Tho steamer Fulton will leave Baltimore next Saturday for this port, and will lie succeeded by the City of Norfolk; after her another steamer of tire line will be ready to ieavo. The loss of the City of Savannah will not interrupt the business of the line, as will be seen by tbe above. Death of American Minister. The Nashville papers announce the death near that city on the 18th, of Hon. John. The late “True California” newspaper, was sold recently under tho sheriff’s hammer, and bought by a Mr. Cook for $3,100. We regret much to see this announcement. The Trut Californian was a beautiful sheet, with all the outward seeming of prosperity. It was owned and edited in pert by Messrs. Washington and C. J. Bartlett, son of tbe late E. O. Should bMo do ee^however, we have no doubt RejoUlngs Worth and South, We learn from the New York Times (Fre mont paper) that last Weduesdy evening, when Capt Rynder’a cannnn was making “ night hideous" to the Rlack Republicans of New York, by its thuudorings in honor of the Democratic victory over the Black Republican and Know Nothiug fusiauists of Penusylvania$ not the least jubilant of those who rejoiced wero the New York supporters of Mr. Fillmore* The fact speaks well for the Fillmore men of that city, and wo record It to their honor* They know that If the Democratic party had been defeated the victory would not have in* ured to the advantage of Fillmore. And dis liking Buchanan less than Fremont they re* joiced at the triumph aohieved by the former over the latter. On the other hand, a friend who passed through Amerlcus (Ga) lost Saturday informs us that the Know Nothings of that place miss' led by a telegraphic dispatch into the belief that the Democrats had lost the day in Penn* sylvania, actually gathered materials for torch light procession, to celebrate the Black Republican fusion triumph! So mad are these men in their hate of the name of Democracy Now need such a party be surprised at find ing itsel^deserted by true patriots. Need they wonder if the people of Georgia rise on the 5th of November in their honest indignation, and sweep them from the soil which they dishonor by their presence. We are amazed not less a* their want of loyalty than their want of wl»* dom. Do they think that an organization can command the confidence of a slaveholding State, which is ready to celebrate with bonfires and illuminations, the election of a notorious Black Republican ticket. Mr. Fillmore’s Northern Strength The fact that the supporters of Fillmore and Fremont, fought under the same flag the late political battles in Pennsylvania and Indiana— tbe friends of one nominating, and voting for the candidates nominated by the friends or the other—makes it impossible to determine their relative strength in those States Ohio it is othorwise—In nearly every Congres* sional District a Fillmore candidate was ran Not one of them was elected. So much for Fillmore’s strength In Otflo—tho only Northern State in which his friends have dared to come before the people, trusting to their own numbers fora victory. We venture the opinion that In the next Con gress there will not he found a single Northern Fillmore man, unless perchance some straggler chosen by the Black Republican votes. On the other hand, in the three States which voted last Tuesday, the Democracy elected between 25 and 30 membersof the House of Repre scuta tivea. So much for the argument of the Fiilmourn- ere that it is the duty or the South, to view of his great Northerostrength to rally to Fillmore 8 27 13 23 Call or which hat been taken) to nuumfac tobeauektr, .ipon, and destined to aaperaetlL ... .or revolving pbtel*, -svT,. iv and No Inuactioai yesterday. and tut it v i-qitudbjr the army I?i» alleged that this pistol Is self cooking— 40 b,rr * 1 * an Important improvement—und tUt tt can be fired six times In a second and a half of time. Johu M Cooler, Johb J Kelly, R1) Arnold, R Bradley, cmzxxs. The last Circular of W. T. Wright of New York speaks as follows of the cotton crop: We have by mall further particulars from the cotton region, and it no longer admits of a doubt that tbe frost of the first of October was severe enough to do injury to the cotton on the low and bottom lands; the accounts also state that the second growth or top crop will be a comparative failure this year. The immediate ellectofthls prospect for the crop has been a redaction In the South from 3 000,000 to 2,800, 000 bales as its probable .maxlutn extent, and tbe establishment of prices for middling quali ties, which, with the present rates of freight and exchange, would require 7 1-2 3-4d. per lb to save from loss in Liverpool, and which is 1 a 1 l-4d above the ruling price there* at tbe date of sailing of the Persia, on 4th Octo* her. The effect of these high prices so much above the quotations in Liverpool' induces caution on the part of American shippers, and parties holding discretionary orders are not willing to do much; the natural consequence is a much smaller amount than usual in process of ship ment to Great Britain, there being at tbe mo ment only eight vessels loading in New Or leans, one each in Mobile, Savannah and Char leston, all of which may clear and be included in my tables of export up to 4th November next; but these together with what maypossi* bly clear from New York^will not give more than 35,000, which added to tbe export up to this time would show a total of 52,000 bales, against 162,000 to the same period last sea son. The receipts are retarded at Mobile by low rivers, at tbe other points they are free, plan ters no doubt beiug induced to burry tbeir crods forward in order to secure tbe prevailing high currency. No lack of buyers, however exis tin any of the Southern'marlcets, for every bale is sola as soon as sampled. Our northern spinners seem determined to secure a fair amount of tbe early receipts and are operating ireely at the Sooth and in this market. The Cincinnati Enquirer was not manifestly not prepared for the brilliant triumph which the Democracy achieved hut Tuesday In In diana. In ita Isaue that morning it said: There are but two State tickets ruonlng in Indiana, the Fillmore men and Black Republi cans having united agalast the Democracy.— Iu November there will be three electoral tickets, ao that today’s election, like that of Pennsylvania, will be no indication of the re sult or the Presidential contest. We have tbo m >st undoobtiog conviction that Janus Baohan.ta will succeed in Indiana, but have great fear* that our friends will not to day bo able to heat the whole combined force of the.enemy. We have at present hut two Democratic members of Congress from In diana. We ought to choose fivo or six at this election. In 1854 the vote on State officers in Indiana stood thus: Collins, Black Republican Secretary of State 99,030 Hayden, Democratic Secretary of State 97,027 standard. Good News ruou rue Wesr—Hiohkuh, Iowa, Iu.inoib and Wisconsin.—A prominent Old lino Whig, of this olty, who is now warmly for Buchanan, bus just returned from thf North west, and brings gloriona tidings. Tho Democracy can beat them'united, or It can beat them divided. We regret to state that Gen.
