he Vickburg and Jackson Railroad, completed and
iafull operation to the Mississippi nver at V ckburg;
opposite which city, in Louisiana, commences the
TTCksburg, Sbrevenport and Texas Railroa d, now
under contract for its whole distance and h rapid
progress or construction. It intersects the New
Orleans and Jackson. Great Northern Railway at
Jackson, *Dd through that at Canton, connects with
tbe Mississippi Central Railway, the iron of which
U now being laid to Holly Springs. It intersects
with the Mobile and < hk> Railroad, as already stat
ed, near Marion, and its point or intersection meets
with the North-eastern aud Southwestern Railroad
in Alabama, and through that unites with the roads
in Virginia, Tennessee and North Carolina. It is
also an indispensable link in the line of Railways
that are to unite Charleston and Savannah, through
Montgomery, Vicksburg, Shrevenport and El Paso,
with the Pacific Ocean running its entire length on
the same parallel of latitude with these places. It
is thus obvious that this line of work U one of the
mott important unfinished enterprises in the coun
try. It is thorough National in its character: for
tt unites Maine and Now Orleans, and tbe Atlantic
and tbe Mississippi, by indissoluable bonds. But
whilst thus National, tt appeals especially for aid to
Southern men and Southern enterprise, for when
completed, with tbe intermediate gap in Alabama,
tt wUl, with its connections, now built and being
built, run right through the heart of those great
Southern cotton-growing States, Louisiana, Missis
sippl, Alabama, Georgia and south Carolina, and
unites tbe great inland sea with the broad ocean.
These facts are stated to call attention to this line
of road and to induce capitalists and contractors, tu
embark liberally in its construction, the fifteen
miles of completed Railroad, with its equipments
and sixty valuable staves, ranny of them mechanics,
isabouus from the State of Mississippi ; the public
laud has bevu donated by Congress ; and tt Is, per
haps, not greatly over-estimating the present pro
perty oilhe road to put itat or uear one rnthiou of
dollars in which sum future stockholders who may
become such by direct subscription of money or
work, will beat once equally interested. It will
thus be seen that this road presents peculiar in
ducements to men of means to eugage in its con
struction.
