We are gratlAed to be able to say that the election la proceeding with the utmoet quiet and good order. The day has been rainy, so much no us probably materially to diminish the vote hero and throughout the State. Tho nuipber of polls taken up to within a few min utes ofi o’clock, was 1704. To such of our friends as have not voted we appeal to come forward and cast In your bal lots. Lot it not be said that this great battle of 1830 has been fooght, a victory achieved, the confederacy saved, and that you bad no part In the contest. Tktpolie will be doted at 0 o'clock. Such la the decision previously made by the judges, and reaffirmed this morning. It has been deemed the doty of all good citb. sens of oither party, upon the eve of an elec tion, to exert every Influence within their com mand to heal the wounds engendered during a political Campaign, and to soften anS conciliate tho minds and tempers of men about to engage in a contest exciting In Its nature and impor tant In its' results. Especially has this been considered the duty of the Press, wielding as it does a vast and commanding power for weal or woe—and never within our recollection have we seen this high duty so totally disregarded, this power so recklessly abused as In the columns of the Republican of this morning. Having recently passed through a struggle, in which various and conflicting Influences of a public and private nature were brought to bear, to such an extent as seriously to threaten the peace and quiet of our homes and Besides and the fair fame of our city, it was hoped that, the press, at least—particularly that organ which prides itself upon its devotion to "decency and order” would havo been the first to pour oil upon the wounds of the past and to hold forth the olive braneh of peace for the present and future. But with full knowledge of these facts, up on tho very morning of the battle, while the sores of tho last contest are still unhealed, and ere the hot blood and passions of men have succumbed to judgment, and reason resumed her sway, it inditCB an article to its opponents at once humiliating, degrading and insulting. Recurring to tho past, It disentombs the buried slanders and falsehoods that should have rested forever, and appeals to the "honestmen” of the Democracy to avoid their repetition. And while asking with an air of sincerity if we are to have a repetion of tho dlsgmcefhl scenes of the paBt, with tho blind fury and zeal ot a partizan, it is putting the torch to the plio, and like the Infamous tyrant Nero, is wllliug to "fiddle, though Romo should bum. Wo liavo no disposition to engage In an argu- meut as to tho truth of the statements contain- cdtn the urticle, but will simply pronouuce them rake and slanderous, and as containing a foul nndcontcmptlblo libel upon better men and better clltzens than Is Its author. But we deem It our duty, and take this early occasion to perform it, to hold up In this com. munlty the man who has bo recklessly sought to disturb its peace and quiet, and the good name of its citizens. We trust he will recoive the disapprobation of all good men, as ho cer tainly will the contempt or all the brave and honorable. And in behalf of the Democratic party, we take occasion to say that irtbis elec tion should pass off quietly, to them, in great measure, will the credit be due, and that while thoy hurl back tho slanders and In sults cast upon them to tho source Horn which they emanate, they wUl leave the author of them to the verdict of a Just and discriminating public. They know their strength in numbers in truth and principles, and regard all such’ contemptible attacks upon them as the blind attempts of a viper to sting the heel that has crushed it. . ThbFrzhcii Go vcrmskt.—The regular cor respondent, Mr. Walsh, of the New York Jour- cal of Commerce, thus writes on the present probable permanence ef the Napoleonic rule : "This government has stood firmly, five or six years, under more difficult and ominous cir cumstances than are likely to occur for as many income j Napoleon HI. has gained strength ; the country is habituated and adjusted to his rule. Tbc re-asemblage of the Congress, or a subordinate diplomatic conference In Paris, though looked ter in the political circles,-iz not rendered certain. If the members should act with the same moderation, and in the same Pacific spirit as the plenipotentiaries of the Uongrean,Europe will be at pescoaudease for a long period. The Court of Claims will meet on the 33th of. November. Left Handed* 1 was riding (nut on a pleasure excursion) through Southwestern Tennessee, during the year 18—, but this has uothing to do with the story. 1 was riding, as 1 said, through that country, whoa 1 raetadirt eating hoy, unu undo, who was attempting to force said undo ou and over a certain gKilo bridge, to cross which the mule mildly hut flrinly doclided. As soon as 1 was within Bpeakiug distauco the hoy aucoetedmo Hallo I mister, wont you lend a hand to get this darned critter aerues this brauoh, for Pm afeard 1 can’t get to Wolverine, before night, and dad wuuts all the buys to get to our house before dinnor, ter two candidates are goin’ to speak and then 1 think h—11 will ho ruised- lor all the gals iu our beat are invited to oome to night; and now stranger, you can go oujust six miles and stop at the house with a top ou it—ter that’s where dad Uvea, and stay till I come back, and alter 1 tell the old folks how you helped me to get Nance (tho mule) across tho branch, may bo you wont bo wel- como! Supposing some ten was on the tapis, and not liking to miss it, 1 stopped at the house with a top on it, was welcomed by the owner, and introduced, us a stranger, to Hal and Betsy, and told that tho black eyed man was ’Hqulro Watson, thorn borough, and the man with blue eyes was Uol. Parsons, from ville, opposite candidates for the same seat in the next Legislature. While tho crowd was collecting 1 had some opportunity to convene with the candidates, andlearned that there about was six hundred vo- ten in the county, aud.tbut three hundred were expected at my old host’s—whose name was M’Leinore—1 ask his pardon for not mention- lug it sooner—that evening. I found thet Ool. Watson was a talented young lawyer, but too diffident for the field us a candidate; yevthero was something in his eye tbat showed his 8a tonic Majesty lurking thereabout. PursonB was uothis interior iu talent, bad a idee as hard os brickbat, and was withal a clever fellow and flndler. At one o'clock the orowd had collected, and Pursous led eff iu Uue style ; never made a bobble, und went straight through, and his friends, andiu fact tho whole crowd, shouted "hurrah terblue eye!” He closed his speech under thundom of applause. Watson, timid and trembling, arose; and with ; reut difficulty could keep his Adam’s apple (own so his voice oould get out, but he suou warmed up os he got ou the right traU, and 1 never heard a speech so torn to pieces as was Parson’s; the tide of popular opinion ran stron ger against Parsons than it had iuhis lavor, and the shout was for the black eyed boy—tdud and unanimous. Supper was the next thing on the bills, and after doing Justice to the meal, the chairs ta bles, beds, beo., were carried into the yard, and tho gals and boys took the floor for a reel- cotillion had never reached their ears. Parsons volunteered his services as orohesta, whloh was iccopted. Parsons was left-handed unfortunate ly, and as a matter or course had to use his bow with that hand# It was eleven' o'clock at night, the dancing was getting, as they said, in a good way, the whiskey circulating freely, when that fickle stream of popular opinion changed its course and set directly against Watson. Parsons was playing some oi his best reels In his best style, und ever and anon, as some turn in the tune pleased a dancer he would yell out, go it blue eyes, and hurrah ter blue eyes. Watson saw something most be done or he was lost. Betook up a dozen to the barrel to drink with him whilo the dancing was still ;oing round, and after taking a drink round, is whispered that he hated that Panama should treat them (the crowd) so; Bays he, just look at the d—d rascal playing tho fiddle with his teRhand. (Parsons could not use his right at all.) Now that's too bad—for it he was in borough he would play with his right md, and play twice as welt. It took like wild fire, and soon this dozen whispered it to two dozen more; and alter the reel one of the party told him that he must play with his right hand. Parsons protested that he could not, and the sovereign swore in his turn tbat he had seen him play right handed, and that hewouldwhlp him If he did not play so; the girls refused to dance, and eveiything was in confusion, and everybody wanted a chance at Parsons, becauso oe would not play os they desired. Poisons knew the crowd, and took the first opportunity to decamp; then went up shouts for hoick eyes, and the meeting adjourned; and two days after the night referred to, hand bills were posted throughout — county, deolarlng Mr. Par sons'intention not to be ft oandtdate at tho ensuing eleotlon. When Watson took his seat in the next Leg islature, he was heard to say i "What a hard oath that was; und’trhat.a great fire a little spark klndletb; for If I had not told a lie about Parsons' lelt handed fid dling, I would havo been where he la, and that's whar.
