We hope there will be a general attendance. Lost Labor.— 1 The Telegraph office, was kept open throughout the whole of last night, iud our morning’s issue kept back until nearly six o’clock, lu the hope of receiving decisive reports from Borne of the more doubtful Statra Yet nothing came of special Interest. The wires were down North of Wilmington, and still are at the time at which we write. tew York Money Matters. Tne New York Commrcial of last Saturday evening reports sales of Georgia, sixes at 08. Virginia sixes 914. Tennessee sixes 92. Mott stocks show a decline. That paper says: This week has been one of very considerable pressure in the money market. The banks are still continuing their system of contraction, as a matter of necessity incidental to the heavy call* upon their specie resources to meet the deinuud for foreigo export. For the fire weeks ending with Saturday last they have lessened their discount lines 5,507,952, or au average of more than eleven huudred thousand dollars a week, while that of the last of the series was more than one and three quarter millions, and the contraction of the present one it is supposed will not be of a less amount. This bits fmeed a very large amount ef business paper iipnu the street, and as a consequence the iates of discount have advanced fully one to (wo per cent since Saturday last First class endrrsed paper cannot be readily cashed at less than ten per cent, while the rutes for that not so much in favor rule at twelve to thirteen and a half. Single names, strictly drat class, uiuy be quoted at twelve to fifteen, aud names not so well known at fifteen to eigh* teen per cent. On call the large bouses are at present obtaining wbat they want at seven per cent, but money is in demand at that rate, and we presume that some parties are obliged to pay more. The exports of specie this week have been large, but they are nearly balanced by the semi monthly instalment from California, which reached us on Tuesday, while the sub-treasury has disbursed about a quarter of a million mor< than i»t receipts daring the week ending last tveing. The p.iymeuta on account of duties for the saute time were a little more than six hand- red tuuusuud dollars. Suicide in New Yoke—Tuuehing Story—« The N. Y. Herald of Saturday, contains a touching story of the suicide ot Louie Howard, a young girl who came from Boxoury, Mass., to tout city. She was about Id yean of age, hud light hair and blue eyes, aud was a very attractive girl. She was betrayed by a educer, aud ai forwards took up her residence iu a house of ill-repute. Here she became ardently at tached to a young man, who a short time be fore her detttu, showed a disposition to out bei acquaintance. The Herald says: un Saturday uighr last the parties met ac cidentally ut Peructiio's ball, where she accost ed him aud wished him to to douce with her. He coldly refused She then pleaded With him to go home with her, as she wished to com- iuuuicute something of importance to them both, but be refused her importunities with redeuess. Wounded at his conduct, she left the bull room and retired to her home; she lay down fur awhile, but shortly alter arose, dress, ed herself, and left the house. This was at two o'clock on Sunday morning. She was accosted by a policeman at the corner of Cortland street, but, not noticing him, she continued Iter way to south terry, aud went on one of the bouts. It was a cold, chilly night; there was no moon, and when the boat was half way across the unfortunate girl threw her- sell without a cry from the stem, and was soon buried uuder the heavy tide that wasruuniug at the time. The two passengers on the boat little kuew of the fearful tragedy that had been enacted on the boat, but the girl was missed by them on the Brooklyn side, aud the alarm given to her friends. Her body was recovered ou Tuesday, aud identified by her female com- pauiou*. A photograph was found on her pen. son ot the young man whom she had loved so well, but so unwisely. On Thursday her re* miiius were conveyed to Greenwood, where she wus interred, with the picture of her false lover placed upon her breast. The scene at the grave was painfully impressive. The landlady of the house, her female companions, a clergy- muu, tiie undertaker and his wife, were all that were present. There wus a good deal of excitement in this city yesterday about this Bonk, which failed to open its doors as usual, and various were ibe conjectures as to its probable condition, iluaociuily. During the forenoon, many anx ious faces might be seen in front or the en trance, with one hand in tho pocket, apparent ly anxiously awaiting the opening of this iusti- tutiou. It did not open, however, and they hnuily dispersed, giving the thing up as a hopeless case. It is supposed by many to be utterly bursted. We have heard of several individuals who hold Its bills for $2,000. What its condition is no one seems stall informed. We siw its bills changing hands as low os 25 cents on the dollar. We are disposed totuink the case not so bad as to Justify so great a sac rifice, Itia reasonable to suppose its Stock holders good for at least half of its liabilities. Everybody accords to Dr. Taylor, its Presidout the greatest intergrity, and think the difficulty into which the Bank has gotten, is from de ception practised upon him by parties at a ni«tuuce, la which ft bad placed undeserved confidence. We advise all who can do so, to hold onto its bills. We have taken steps to obtuiu the names of its Stockholders, and when obtained shall give them to the public, when they will bo belter able to Judge or the value of >u issues. Thanksgiving Day. Editors I am pleased to learn that the stock has been subscribed to the At lantic and Gulf Railroad, necessary to its organ isation, and I see that tho Savannah Republi can recommends tho Hon. Charles Spalding, and theBainbridge Argus, the Hon. James P. Screven, as President of the Company. Dr. Robert Collins ought to be made President of this Company for many reasons, and I say this without intending or wishing to disparage tbo other gentlemen named in the slightest degree; on the contrary I have the highest regard for them as geutlemon, and as men possessing in tellect of the highest order. The only difficul ty now in the way of the speedy construction of the Main Trunk Road, is the release from the Brunswick Company; and there is no man living who could get that release so soon, or upon as good terms as Dr. Collins. Dr. Screven is the President of the Savannah and Gull Road, und it will be remembered that this Road and the Brunswick Road have been con sidered as rivals, and it is not to be disguised that these two' Companies are not on the best of terms. Mr. Spalding voted against the Bruoswick Aid bill in the Legislature, and is the father of the Atlantic and Gulf Road. This last Road has ever been considered by the Bruuswick Company as u rival Road also, and it is but natural that they should distrust any one who they ever looked upon as an enemy. Dr. Collius, on tbo contrary, has built tie Brunswick Road as far os it has been built, and nos ever been tbe econsistent and unwavering friend of that Ruud. Is it not reasonable to suppose that he cuuld make more speedy end betur arrangements than any oue else with the Brunswick Compauy ? I sincerely hope that tor the interest of the State, tbe people, and the Atlantic aud Gulf Road, that Dr. Collins will be made the President. A Citizen of Thomas. The Dn#U between Messrs. Mr. P. fired at the word "one,” the bail passing on the hip and around the back of his antagonist, where it came through and fell on the ground. The fire of Dr. F. bad no effect upon Mr. P., uud all parties were thon driven home. Dr. F.’s condition is not dangerous. The city was in considerable excitement dar ing all Saturday. More Anon. A few days since a secret meeting of several leading Democrats wus held iu the city of Albany, at which ex-Lieutenant Governor Church, Dean Richmond, chairman of the 8tatr committee, Peter Dagger, secreta ry, the editors of tho Atlus and Argus, and several others from various ports of tbe State, were present. The meeting was intended to collect the canvass of the whole State, and such other information os was accessible, and, in their minds, reliable, and then calculate tbe prospects iu each county, and compile a table or votes for circulation iu the respective coun ties. The public are assured that tho document is authentic, and comes from the individuals named above, and a few others associated in tbe meeting whose names could not bo easily procured. Every politician in the State will of course desire to know the opiuions of those leading men. They seem confident of success, The figures foot up as follows: * Buchanan, 198,834 Fillmore, 138,246 Fremont, 192,534 —making an aggregate of 529,064 votes. The entire vote of the State will exceed this by about 20,000 votes, but the proportions will be preserved. ANDERSON, Chair. The Richmond Duel!—(From tho Dispatch of Monday) Muoh excitement prevailed in our community on Saturday morn ng, in con quetice of a report that a duel had been fou^ uear the city between Dr. O. B. Finney, State Senator from Ifec Acoomae Distriot, and Roger A. Pryor, Esq., cue ul' tbe editors of tho Rich mond Enquirer. Tho report turned out to bo correct. Early Saturday morning, the parties, with their friends, repaired to a place in Henrico county, a mile or two weBtof Richmond, where they fought with pistols at 10 paces. Dr. Fin ney was wounded at tbe first fire, the ball en- tering his right side, above the hip, and pass ing around to the buck, whence it was subse quently extracted. Being thus disabled, he wus in no condition to fire again, aud tbo aflbir ter minated. Dr. Finney was conveyed to his lodgings at the Ballard House. He lias suffered great pain from his wound, though it is hoped it will not result totally. It Is due to both gen tlemen to say that they exhibited on the m * * much firmness and presence of mind. We cannot speak authoritatively of the causes which led to this unfortunute affair. Doubtless the friends of both parties wiU in time enlighten the public mind with regard to its origin. Tbe challenge, it said, proceeded from Dr. Fiuney, and the whole matter was planned and carried into execution within tho short period of twelve or fourteen hours.
