North Carolina, Thirty counties in North Carolina, show nearly equal gains for Buchanan and Fillmore on the late State election.—[The State election went Democratic by some twelve or fourteen thousand majority. The majority of Buchanan is probably not less than twenty thousand.] New York Cotton Market. Niw York, Nov. 8.—Tho Cotton market is unchanged, with sales of tho day 1300 bales. Middling Uplands 12*. Mixed Corn 71 cents. Stephen A. Dougin*. To no man does the country, and particular ly the South, owe a deeper debt of gratitude for the glorious victory wo have achived, than to him of Illinois, whose name heads this article. The acknowledged champion and leader of ,tho great principle for which we were contend' ing he was made tho peculiar mark for the shafts of the opposition, which were freely launched at him, charged with an amount of bitterness and venom imparelelied in the his tory of any former campaign. Indeed, 89 high was his position, so formidable his talents, and so marked and commanding his influence, that alter the defeat of Buchanan, his ruin was the next great work to be accomplished ; and the history of the post few months well attests the fact that to this end they have labored— with a perseverance that in a virtuous cause would have deserved the highest success. And even at the South—the clime of free' men, and the home of brave and chivalrous men—has the torch of proscription been raised against this fearless advocate of our Constitu tional rights- Against thoso who. have done this wromg we have nothing to Bay. The heat of -party conflict is over, and no mortifleation can be so great, or punishment so severe to them, as their own feelings, in view of-the decided unanimous and unmistakeable verdict pro> nounced against them, their principles anil acts, by a jury composed by millions of free men. The above thoughts have been suggested by the nows brought us by telegraph to-day, viz : that Iowa has returned to tho, paths of recti tude, and that Illinois, t rue to her instincts, has trolled back the tide of fanaticism—that but so lately threatened to crush her idol and disgrace her character. Ccn, Cos*. The South has of late been repeatedly called to mourn the fall of her noble nllies in the halls of our National Legislature. One by one have they fallen with, the harness on, in the beat of the conflict, before the ruthless blows of frecsoil hordes. Tho accomplished Toucey has been swept before a torrent bo was uo longer able to stem; the brave and chivalrous Shields is an exile from his State, deprived of his position by tho unrelenting hand oT proscription ; uud tho gallant Dodge lias lowered his crest, and tho ring of his true steel is no longer heard above tho din of the battle when our rights are at stake. But it remained for this contest to bring out the^most foul and damning deed of all. Oar dispatches adviso us that Michigan has been carried by the Black Republicans, and that Gen. Gass, the “ Nestor of the Senate,” after a longlife devoted to tho service of his country and her Constitution, is to be deprived of his ■eat. This is a crushing blow to all the great interests of our country—a source of deep mortifleation to all conservative men of the North and South, and speaks in a voice of fear- fol import to ns whose interests and rights have been so long and so ably defended at bis bands. Our feelings of joy at the general result must be tempered with sadness by this announce ment ; and while we must feel a holy indigna tion at this foul disgrace, we have tho satisfac tion of knowing that the “Old man eloquent,” after a long and well-spent public life, full of honors and ripe in years, retires to his homo followed by the regrets uud gratitude of thou sands of his countrymen. Sebiout Accidenh.—An accident of rather a Berious nature happened lust evening to our esteemed citizen Mr. Johu G. Falligaut, Aider- man elect, and his brother Jos. E. Falligant. They were in tho buggy of the former, return* Ing from bis plantation at Thunderbolt, when near the city, between the culvert on the Thun derbolt road, and the house of Mrs. Conner, the animal attached to the veichle was run into the wooden ditch precipitating the above named gentleman from it, they receiving serious in juries, it is to bo hoped that they are tempo- *"* Habinb Disaster.—'The tern EckfordWebb, Oapt. Tdskegbk, Nov. 5, 1850, I write you the result of oar election. This county (Macon) has gone for Fillmore by 108 majority. This is tho banner county of Know Nothingism, and gave a majority, at one time, for them of 800—at tho election lost year their majority was 302, now 108. Wright for the steamer of last Wednesday, says: Since my circular of 28th ult. the Atlantic aud Asia Live arrived, the latter with dates to Oct. 18. The stringency in tho money market continued, whioh prevented any material ad vance in the Liverpool Cotton market, and with sales for the week of 73,000 bales, the market closed firmly at full previous quotations. The Manchester market was dull, but prices were Arm, and tho accounts frojn India encouraging. Tho dullness noticed in my previous circular os prevaliug in this market during the past week, has continued, though in a more marked degree throughout this. A general disposition has been eviuced to await further develope- ments as to the probable course of the markets both in Europe and the South, and the sales consequently have been confined to cheap par cels, to arrive or instore, and amount fn the aggregate to about 5,000 bales. My former quotations are continued, but must be consid ered nominal, os buyers will not pay them, and sellers are indifferent, and generally refuse less. The export for the week has been—to Liver pool, 1,566; Havre, 230. Total, 1,796 bales. Yesterday, alter tho above was written, and too late to show itsefiect on the market, the Canadian’s news from Liverpool to 22d October was received via Quebec, by telegraph. The Liverpool market was reported as excited, an advance realized of 3-lGa. per lb, and sales for three days 60,000 bales, half of which was on speculators’ account. Money market easier, Consols advanced, and breadstuffii declining. Southern markets show more activity and n raoro general buying has commenced in each, for England, Franco, the Continent of Europe and our Northern spinners; prices are firmly maintained at ll|c< l'or Middling. For parti culars I refer to reports by mail, and for a week Inter nt Mobile and New Orleans by tele, graph. Crop, Receipts, Exports, &c—The crop accounts remain without change, tho estimates continue at from 2,800,000 to 3,000,000 bales, the lower figure generally entertained in the Atlantic States. The receipts at the ports are large and will continue so until the bulk of the crop is received, unless retarded by low rivers, Planters arc desirous of securing tho present currreucy aud are making unusual efforts to get their crops to market. It is quite possible this fact may give riso shortly to somewhat increased estimates ot crop, and lead to some what increased estimates of crop, and lead to some errors of opinion on the subject. The exports to Great Britain are still small, being for the week, 21,000 hales aud for the season 51,000 bales, agniust 102,000 to same dates last season. The man who is sure of bis own position is tho slowostto suspect another of any design to question it; and henco the art of avoidiug altercations has generally been deemed one of the peculiar characteristics of a gentleman. Never to seem afraid of being put upou, as the phrase goes—never to argue a question merely lest people should think you can argue it—never to fight simply for fear the lookers-on might think you a coward—these are some of the maxims on which all men of superior miuds act, habitually and unconsci ously; and it is this habit which gives to such men that air of reposo and self-possession be fore which fools stand abashed and dandies are wild with envy. Few men can have mingled, even in the slightest degree, in society, without noticing that ono prominent feature in the character of a porvenue, is his proneness to take offence. Ills ancles are sharper, his corns “more tender,” than those of other people. There is really no knowing where to be safe with him. The mo ment you nut your linger on him, his bristles stand out like a hedgehog’s. Tho best plan, of course, is to leave such a character alone. We should do our best to avoid infringing on their ramified irritability. It is senseless to provoko a man whoever he may be, who has the power to be mischievous. The man who wonts to light you in the streets because you push against him, may be a low fellow, bat that will 1* no consolation if you go homo 4 witb a black eye, Neither will it much mend the matter if you give him two in return. On the whole, you will cousideritn very disa greeable business, and wisli devoutly you had never got into it. The Progress ok Life.—Men rejoice when the sun 1ms risen; they rejoice also when it goes down wile they aro unconscious of tho decay of their own lives. Men rejoice on see ing the face of a new seaseu, as at the urrival of one greatly desired. Nevertheless the revo lution of ouo season is the decay of man. Frag ments of driftwood meeting in the wide ocean continue together a little space; thus parents, wives, children, friends and riches, remain with us a short time, then seperate—the sepa ration is inevitable. No mortal can escape the common lot; he who Mourns for departed re latives, has no power to cause them to return. One standing on the road would readily say to unumber of persons passing by, “I will follow you;”—why, then. should a person grieve when journeying tho Bame road which has been assuredly traveled by all our forefathers? Ofiedik.ncein Children.—It is unspeakable what a blessing it is to a child, what a saving of unhappiness und wickedness in after life, to be early taught absolute obedience; there must bo no hesitating or asking why, but what a mother says must at once he done. The young twig bends easily, but remember, that iu after years it grows hard, and will break before you bend it. A little steadiness at first will save you many years sorrow. While you insist upon obedience, however, you must care that you do not provoke a child, and tempt it to disobedience by unreasonable aud foolish commands. “Provoke not your children to wrath;” and when it is necessary to punish them, see that it never lie done violently and in a passion, but as a duty.—Hints to Mothert.
