A Cim.u'a History op Hum, by John Bonner,
author of** A Child’ll History of the United
st iles. Published by llaruer & Brothers,
Now York. For wile ny \Vm. T. Williams.
We hufo always looked upon the efforts ot
critics who have attempted to dispel the
illusion created by our early reading of Roman
history, us the most outrageous act of ruthless
barbarism. There have been and stIU are a set
of rude disturbers of received history, who say
that the timt live hundred years of Rome, as
iwimlcd, Is a more romance, depending prin-
cipully upon the relations or Livy, who is enti
tled to little or no credit A celebrated French
critic, M. Do Beaufort, in the last century, bold
ly attacked the credibility of tho early Romau
history; the celebrated liistorlau Nclbhur has
done the Home thing, aud more recently Sir G.
Cornwall tawis has followed in their footsteps.
The process of de.s! ruction is an easy one, but
to rebuild is iuoiy dticullof accomplishment
It costs little for t-uso critics to tell us that we
have been receivi ig as instruction, that which
1ms no particle oi truth, but how ure they to
supply the place > (what they deprive uaf Are
we to forget fon ver the vestal virgin Rhea
Silvia, tlie story ot Romulus aud Remus, with
the nursing by the wolf and the jumping
over the wall; the legend of the Turquins,
aud Lucretia, aud Julius Brutus? Must wo
no longer allow our publio speakers to cite
iu^ their declamations the examples of Cin-
cinnatua, takeu from the plough aud placed
at the helm of State ? Are we to be told that
no such man as Goriolanus ever lived ; that be
never appeared at the gates of Uomo with the
hostile Volsci at his back, aud that his mother
aud wife, uever went forth leading his little
ckildreu by the band, with Btreamiug eyes to
turn away the wrath of the incensed Roman ?
Must our children have the privilege, as we
have had, to admire the herolo gallantry of
Maulius Torquatos, in his light with the giuut
Gaul, or Homtius Goccles, when he defends the
bridge with his single arm ? This would be
cruel iudeed to posterity, and wo should insist,
if this early period of Rome will not stand the
test of criticism, and be not true, that it ought
to be so, aud it shall be so. It contains so
mauy instances of puro patriotism, of heroic
virtue, of noble daring, to. recommend it to
youthful admiration and emulation, that we
should insist on taking it for granted.
Mr. llouuer has given us two little volmnes,
Intended for the youthful reader. He has
droned up the mainleaditig events of Roman
history with considerable embelisliment, and
put them in so pleasing a form as will no doubt
cause them to be read with avidity. He has
paid no attention tothecritca, but gives us aa
true those charming stories which for so many
ceat .ries have delighted the world. We re*
commend the book to parents, not because it 1b
a history, but because it treats of a subject
abouudiug in instruction and good to the rising
generutiou. To none can that instruction come
with more profit than the juvenile republicans
of the United States. If their minds can but
bed rasn to tho contemplation of the men and
events of that great republic, in after years
they may extend their researches to the more
full aud correct works of the EugUsh historians,
and penetrate even so far os the classic origlu*
als themselves. To the lovers ot republican
institutions no whore can we look for
warning and profit so surely as to the
workiugs of the Roman Constitution. We may
observe, the sands, the shallows and the rocks
upon which that heroic and virtuous people,
first stranded and struck and at last entirely
sunk into obscurity. It is study full of interest
if we but benefit by example, and steer
clear of the errors of our predecessors in free*
Government
He Is not a Gentleman.
Tbc Block and spruce little mock-dandy who
has so unfortunately for himself been elected
Mayor of this city, by force of brass knuckles
and slung shots, is said to be terrified and
crushed under the weight of condemnation
which he, or the rufllans who pull the strings
which move him, have brought upon bis head.
Men most disposed to palliate ids conduct Bay
that he ought not, in fairness, to be held ro-
sponsible for bis actions; that ire is constitu
tionally timid, lacking both physical and mor
al courage: that be is held in the palm of the
hand of tne organized band of ruffians and
jail birds who elected him to office last spring,
aud that he dares not make an appointment,
write o line or say a word, without their con
sent and approval. They say that his illegal
warrants against the Courier and the Charity
Hospitul, his base and sneaking violation of
Lieutenant Fremaux’s word to the Courier, and
his undeniable connivance at the Thuggeries of
the 4th Inst. ,uro forced upon him by the gang
of bloodsuckers who raised him to power, and
who permit him to live only for their own pur
poses. They say that ho is in continual terror
of hia littlo life, and obeys the orders of his
former bullies and present masters, by the irre-
sistuble force of his native cowardice and of
his terrible bond of common criminality with
them.
if this liotrue, heexites our pity and con
tempt rather than our indignation. Although
he has told a premeditated falsehood in s solemn
proclamation—although he has insulted us by
an illegal process issued against us, and by an
uulawtul invasion of our private property, and
an infamous seizure of it in base violation of
the pledged word of his lieutenant, at the very
moment when wo needed it most, yet if all this
was done by him in pitiful terror of bis accom
plices in crime, we look on him with disgust
and abhorcnce, but not with anger. He has
already, by his continued silence, answered the
question which we, the author of this article,
put iu our issue of Wednesday last. He has
practically answered that he is not a gentle
man, and we uccept his ansewer accordingly.
JJeucelorth, If it were not that ho nominally
occupies the position of Mayor, which is really
held by ruttians who terrify him, wo should dis
miss him from our very thoughts os a thing not
wortby|evon to be remembered, much less spoken
ofby any honorable man. As it is, bis ofilciul
acts heretofore and hercutter demand, and will
probably continue to demand, our comment
But, whether we may be called upon to approve
or condemn them, we, the author of this article
and oi the one in Wednesday’s issue headed,
''Is the Mayor a Gentlsman? ,r will never euter-
tain the smallest doubt as to the question there
asked. His silence has answered the question.
He is not a gentleman.
We copy the above from the “New Orleans
Courier.” The editor as will be seen gives a
delightful account of the gentleman who leads
the hosts of “Sam" in that benighted city.

gambling houses have been shut up: the sellers
of immoral books putin prison, their authors

maintained. Yet the man is not popular with
the thinking classes, although they acknow

When 1 visited Paris first, some thirty years
ago one could only manage to live well and
cheaply at the same time, although in little
accessories there was room for much amend

carriages bad, and there was little appearance
of wealth, and no improvements going for

well say, ' Nous avous change tout cela 1’ The
streets arc now being widened, and new houses
erected, m place of old ones knocked down,
all through Paris, and already the city pre

the common stairs in most, of the new build

in the following squib, amusingly takes off the
praevalent custom of giving testimonials to
everybody, upon all sorts of occasions, and for
all sorts of things:

A Sad Story,—A letter from the town of
Lawrence, Kansas, to the Cincinnati Gazette,
says:
“ I bad a painful interview with an old man,
yesterday, that impressed me with the effect of
Kausas life, in Pennsylvania I had known him
us a Methodist class leader—a pious old man-
famous for interlarding his conversation with
texts of scripture. As ho told me, iu some de
gree of excitement, of his wrongs, ho quoted
scripture as usual, but I observed with some
su-pri.se that it was singularly mixed with
curses and imprecuti ns.
“After ho got through with his story, I re
minded him of his church and Sunday school
iu Pennsylvania, and expressed some surprise
ut his language* The old man scorned utterly
prostrated by the recollection. Ho sunk dowu
on the prairie, and while his long gray hair
blew in the wind, the big tears rolled down his
furrowed cheeks. After a moment he said,
would to God I had died before 1 ever came
out here. I enjoyed religion once, but this life
—Ob, God—let s go aud get something to
drink.’"
Better, fur better (Bays tho New York Ex
press) that that pious old man bad remained
leading bis class iu Pennsylvania than that he
should have gone to Kansas at the instigation
of some wicked Black Republican probably to
“shriek for freedom,"—aud go dowu to the
grave a hardened reprobate.

The Democracy of New Hampshire.—Not
withstanding the IhsloniBts have secured the
five electoral votes of New Hampshire for
Fremont, the unfaltering democracy of that
State, at the late election, oust the largest
vote ever cast by them. Says the Patriot:
“That vote was more than 3,000 larger
than the vote given for Gen. Pierce in 1852;
and it is larger than will be teqnired for
years to carry an eleetion honestly conducted.
It should bo further borne in mind that the
vote of last Tuesday is quite as large as we ex
pected to cast—that we felt sure being able
to carry the State with that vote, as we be
lieved it to be a majority of the honest vote
of the State.
“The result, therefore, is ucither discredita
ble to tbo democracy of New Hampshire, nor
such os will discourage them In the least. They
have done all they expected to do; and that
they do not reap tho fruits of victory is no
fault of theirs: it is because they have l»een
fraudulently withheld from them."
Fillmore at Home.—The Baffblo Courier
thus announces the glorious victory achieved
L y the democracy in the very home of Millard
illraoe:
“We are proud to announce that Hon. Israel
T. Hatch, the democratic nominee for Congress
1b elected by a very handsome majority. Mr.
Hatch will have the honor of being the first
democratic representative in congress, from this
district for many years.
“We take pleasure in congratulating the
democracy of the country on this glorious result-

We have met the enemy and they are oars."
Portrait op Gov. Geary.—A Kansas cor
respondent of the Cincinnati Gazettee de
scribes Gov. Geary thus: “ Gov. Geary is about
six feet two inches in height, broad shouldered
and bony, but not fleshy, and having a slight
stoop. His forehead is not good ; his eyes
are deep sunken in his head, resembling port
holes in a fort His nose is thin, long ana in*
dining to 4 pug/ the lower extremity showlug
an inclination to turn upwards, as though he
would draw hia inspirations from a stratum
above that breathed by common mortals. His
color is sallow and bad, and the face almost
expressionless. He wears his beard long, bnt
the hairs of his head cropped short A few
gray hairs appear In bis beard. He wore
a simple citizen’s dress—a long skirted blue
frock coat, abett crowned chimney pot hat,
long ago out of fashion, but well preserved—
but his manner for a civilian was wonderfully
dignified.”
The Cotton Crop.—Mr. Wright, in bis cir
cular for tbe steamer, says:—The crop ac
counts remain without change; the estimates
continue at from 2,800,000 to 3,000,000 baleB,
the lower figure generally entertained in the
Atlantic States. The receipts at the porta are
large, and will continue so uutil the bulk of the
crop is received, unless retarded by low river*.
Planters are desirous of securing the present
currency and are making unusual efforts to get
their crops to market. It is quite possible this
fact may glvo rise shortly to somewhat increas
ed estimates of crop, aud lead to some errors of
opinion on the subject. Tbe exports to Great
Britain aro still small, being for tbe week 21,-
000 bales, and for the season 51,000 bales,
against 162,000 to same dates last year. At

How to Makb a Raise.—An entertaining
correspondent mentions ugood retort which he
once made upon an acquaintance, whose wont
it was to go around the city “cherry cobbler-

ter was often for a week at a time in a “state
of whisky punchineness."
Ho was once very angry with me; I Bald to
him one morning:

you are to be the means, for civility'* sak, I’ll
tell you about it. though it is not essential."

Hazel Eyed Uikls.—Major Noah said that
“a hazel eyo inspires at first a platonic senti

sacrifices her husband’s comfort to her own,
never finds fault, never talks too much or too
little, always is an entertaing, intellectual,
agreeable and lovely creature.
Affecting Remonstance^—A genuine Down
Easter was lately essaying to appropriate a
square of exceedingly tough beet at dinner in
a Wisconsin hotel. His convulsive efforts with a
knife and fork attracted the smile of the rest,
in the same predicament as himself. At last
Jonathan's patience vanished under his ill-
success, when laying down his utensils, he
hurst out with tho followlag: “Strangers, you

landlord’s feelings, you ought to have some
respect for the old bull." This sally brought
down the house.

Interesting from Ruatan.—By the arrival
at New Orleans, of the schooner Mary, we have
dates from Ruatan to tbe 6th. CupL Stevens,
of the Mary, Bays: The news of the recent
treaty between Honduras and England reached
Batten on the 17th, and had caused considera
te exclteraeut. The public opinion was almost
unanimous ugalnst recognition of the sovereign
ty of Houdums, uml a largo portion of the
inhabitants were determined to resist the mea-
■ores if It be forced upon them. Many were
in favor of endeavoring to Income and inde-
pendendent republic. Tho island is inhabited
by about 3,500 people, a large portion of them
bltoks, but all s|>eaking tbe English language,
tbe same os those of St. Andrew’s and Pro-
videnoia, nearer to the New Granadian coast,
Shad and A Lewi VE8.—At a town meeting
in Taunton, the right to take shad and alewivea
in Taunton, Great Blver were sold 09 followt:
—First privilege to Joseph Gibbs of Somerset,
for $217.50. Second privilege to George B.
Slade ofSomerset, for $217.60. Third privilege,
George B. Slade ofSomerset, for $217.50
Meteor.—A brilliant meteor, says the
8pringfield Republican, was seen In the heav
ens near the zenith at 11 o’clock on Saturday
night, in that city. It lighted up the town
for the moment like the sun; and so that tie
shadows were strongly east. Its nucleus was
red os fire, whUe its tail spreaf out dimmer
and whiter. It was a startling sight to the
beholder.
