In turning over tho leaves of a very delight* fnl book, lately published, our oye chanced to full on tho following petition, signed by sixteen maids of Charleston, and presented to the Governor of that provinco on March 1,1733. Wo publish it for the amusement of the fair renders of the Georgian Journal: To His Kxckllenoy Gov. Johnson : The humblo petition of nil the Maids whoso names are underwritten— Whereas, We, tho humble petitioners, are at nrcsent in a very melancholy disposition of inind, considering how all the bachelors aro Mindly captivated bv widows and our youthful charms thereby neglected: the consequence of this our request is that your Excellency will, for the future, order that no widow shall for the future presume to marry any young nun till the maids are provided for; or else to nay each of them a Huo for satisfaction for invading our liberties: and likewise a flno to be lain on all sm h bachelors as shall lie married to widows. The great disadvantage it is to us maids, is, that the widows by their forward carriages do snap up tho young men; nndhavo the vanity to think their merits beyond ours, which is a great imposition on us who ought to Imvo tho preference. This is humbly recommended to your Excel* leaey's consideration, and hope you will pre vent any further insults. And wo poor maids, as In duty bound, will ever pray. Cotton Shipperf Cotton Brokers. Wo have published the address of the Board of the American Chamber of Commerce and the Cotton Brokers of Liverpool to the Cham bers of Qommerce of Chariest m, Savannah, New Orleans Ac., in relation to the false pack, ing of Cottop. Tho address has called forth the following response which appears in a Liver- poll paper: Messrs. Editors—You publish the address of the American Chamber of Commerce, tho Board of Cotton Brokers at Liverpool, to tho Cham bers of Commerce at Chariest.-n, Savannah. Mobile and New Orleans, in relation to the evil of t'p’so packed cotton. That uddress is all in their own favor, as it is well known spinners have twelve months’ license to make a claim, for what they call false packed. This claim can only ho enforced on thl8Bideof the water, when each and every mark oiggie bale can be given, and as la many coses this cannot be done, the loss falls on the Inst shipper. A large dealer in cotton informed tho writer, many months ago, tlmt he had paid over $500 for false packed cotton, and cou’d not recover, because he lmd not all the various marks required. How this evil is t? ho remedied, the Liverpool r ivans do not tell us. It’s not a fraud; tor ofteu samples of cotton show two qualities, r aud it is sold by. tho poorest, and value'paid for tho same accordingly. My remedy would be, that the purchaser have the cotton examined on the day of rale, and t ike care tlmt it is well examined, and let him re ject auy not equal to sample. If bought on speculation, he should have no redren, unless claimed within two weeks after delivery. There uro, however, evils of much greater magnitnde practised in Liverpool, winch the argus-eyed Chamber of Commorc3 have over- looked. I allude to tho mode of' .mpliug the cotton. In America tho cotton is sampled on the Bide, My IlgvotuiioN in Nortiuhn Itaiuo— Si Brownwl 10 King, or tho 18th Init., leant, tlmt Oul. The nttuokere commenced tho Bght at aboat 1 o’clock la thy morning; with three niece, or an •tilery, consisting of one twenty-four pound howitzer, one twelve and one four pound can non. Col. Garcia mot him on the outskirts of the town, and won the light became general, and is represented SB having been furious for some hours, whon Sayas was compelled to re* tire with aieavy low in killed, wounded, and prisoners, leaving bchlud two pieces of can sixty or seventy mules, over a hundred hohwn, several wagons or ammunition; and a magnifi cent regimental banner. The Flag has, Low- over, late information from other wurcos, which 1 are contradictory or the foregoing, but it is not considered so reliable. The Flag says that Vidauni, if hemmed in as represented, must either yield to- his enemies or call in foreign aid. The Corpus Christ Valley, of the 8th gjves tho other verainn of the affair, and is credited by tlie Picayune. It says: By the mail which left Brownat Hie on lost Sunday, the 2d Inst., we have news that Yidaurri croswd the San Juan river, and suc ceeded in beating the forces of Gama out of Camargo. The commander of the latter, Col. Guadalupe Garcia, is said to have retreated toward Reynoso and Matamoroe, with consid erable loss, and to have abandoned his artillery. A considerable number of his men deserted him, and are nowon this side of the Rio Grande. Yidaurrl is reported to have marched with his maiu force from Camargo on Mon terey, to meet thegovernment troops from the interior, who wore advancing against that place. It was expected that he would easily succeed in whipping them, should certain ne gotiations fail, which were on foot, as his men are of better “material” than those composing the Government troops. Coraonfort, the President substitute, isdis- -nosedto treat with Yidaurrl, os ho sees that he Is so well backed by the northern frontier: but he does so unwillingly, os he la, we doubt not, jealous of Vidaurn's influences. The latter has many strong friends, even in the City of Mexico; and, with the exception of Alvarez, is the only reliable man. judging from their an tecedents, among the leading liberals of Mexico. Col. Martin Sayes, (the son of a Kentuckian, by tho by,) had marched with 600 men from Linares, to join Vidaurri’s main body. Yidaurrl is an honest and sensible man, but devoid of the education and genius necessary to redeem the fallen fortunes of his country. The Multerlngs of Dlsoontcnt.lii Franco, The Paris correspondent of the Times, in a letter dfttod 0th,rays; For some days peet ru mors were current of an approaching modifica tion of tho French cabinet; and the return of M. Billault to Paris was said to be awaited for that purpose. The discontent existing in the faubourgs, the destitution among the working classes, (not so much . from want of employ ment as from the high prico of all the neces saries of life,) the dissatisfaction of tho manu facturing people, the financial or monetary crisiB, tho frequent discovery of seditious placards, and the aspect of affairs generally, at home and abroad, were all sufficiently legiti mate motives of ajarm. Tho reports of tho Prefect police, confiden tially ami directly nddrossod to the Emperor, showed that tho condition of tho people was anything but satisfactory and that their mur- JMirs were not unfounded. M. Billault return ed to Palis on Monday evening, and immediate ly resumed Ida function. A cabinet council met yesterday at Com- pieg. c, and then various questions were brought before it in the presence o.f tho Em peror, and fully discussed, One member of the council spoke at considerable length, and he proved tunt the sufferings and consequent di; - content of the Parisian population were, to q great extent, owing to the financial measure of tho Government; and that the discontent of tho manufacturers was attributable to.their fear of radical changes in tlio tariff. Tho coun cil sat far some time, and questions of foreign interest were also discussed. The Paris correspondent or the London Post Arrests hnve again taken place, in conse quence of the strike among certain classes of the workmen. Placards still more menacing Ilian those 1 have already alluded to, continue to he posted on tho walls of the houses, -nd they assume indifferently a Legitimist, Orlean- 1st, or Revolutionary color. It is not by night only that these placards are affixed, but some times in tho noonday, under the eyes of tho police. The persons who aro said to he em ployed in tills work bring small sheets of paper which are already prepared with wafers, and they take their stand against a wall, holding their bauds behind their backs, as if they were merely resting tliemr.elvcs. They soon quit their position, and leave the placard sticking to the wall, without the police agents noticing them. It is only 111 an hour or two afterwards that the groups who stand reading tho paper attract their attention, and when they come up to tlin spot they Hud such words ns tlieso: “ Vive Henry V! ’’ “ Vivo le Comte do Pnris!" “Vive la Kepubliquo! ” “Alias Louis Napo leon ! ” “ Mort au* Proprietors!” “ Le Pain a 10 sous, Ac.” -It is pres. Sale of Brunswick City Loth, , sumed that the uncertainty attending the nego tiations expected to takoplaca concerning tho Main Trunk will prevent our having many persons present to day os purchasers. The extraordinary effort which Savaunali is ranking has startled many gentlemen who intend to temovo to Brunswick, hut they prefer ta await the denouement of ovents, even at the risk of irayiug higher prices lit a futuro period. Wo ask no ono and we dosfre no one to como hero without feeling confidence in the ~ “ ’ * Voneimwt ^Lat wo. can rno'arrange- ment will Tmj made with the Main Trank Road that will Ijo adverse to the interests of this city; and consequently that those gentlemen who are here for tho purpose of purchasing may do so with entire safety, ft is altogether probable that at no subsequent tiraowill Improved lots sell ut so low a price ah now. Investments must therefore pay well.—Brunswick Herald of Thursday, viz: and a fair sample we consider it us it is from the middle of the bale. Now, allow the hale to be cut as in tho cut, betweou ropes, on each side, and you will no doubt get good and fair samples. In Liverpool, however, thoyrip the ends of the bales, and take samples from the ends, by draw ing a pieco of one of the layers of cotton. Now, any one conversant in pressing cotton knows that the end of every bale is the last tbiuf sewed up, after the bale has been roped, rollei out of the press, and takes up all the dust of tho house as it comes iu contact with it. This mode of sampling ofteu makes cotton rank worse than.it really is, and the spinners get the advanlage, ifany. Again, all ropes are cut off before weighing, but two. In this country a bale is not in good order unless there are five ropes. These ropes are sold., but nover appear .rathe account of sales. It is, iud Jd, hard to lose tho difference iu weight; but to be robbed of the rope is add ing injury to injury. Again, all loose patches and loose cotton also^are picked oft, and put aside and sold. The poor shipper neither sees nor hears any more of of that; and his accout sales show a heavy loss, whilst his consignee pockets at least lOd. per bole sterling. A ill tho Chamber of Commerce at Liver pool, in their anxeity to look alter the honesty of the planters, factor, dealers and shippers in America, turn the’r thoughts home, before taking tho moto out pf on* eyes, and adopt a uniform method of sampling, as it U practised iu tho markets to whom their uddress is jjiven, and let the consignees allow no claim without every mark—planter’s and county mark—Is specified on the certificate. Adduuto account sales the proceeds of ropes, pickings, &o., and endeavor not to make two commissions, one by peculations and he other legitimate. Also, use for weghing the beam asm th’s country and not the old 50 weights; allowance for draught, taro und tret, which aro now obsoleto excepting in Old England. In fine, let them ao their lest h make the customs and practices of both countries har monize, and they will then get their claims for fi»’so packing more cheerfully paid by the. i. Missouri Unithd States Senatofs.— 1 The St. Louis Republican btvb : “Wo learn from a source likely to be well in formed tlmt a caucus of leading members of tho parties composing the opposition to tho demo cratic party is in contemplation in this city, tho chief object of which is to elect Colonel Benton and a know nothing to tho Senate ot the United States. The parties raoH interested iu pushing this plan forward expressed them selves, in a recent conversation, quite confident of carrying it out, and of electing their men: but it will turn out that neither the friends of Fremont nor those of Mr. Fillmore wero more mistaken in the presidential election than these party managers will he in the election of sena tors to Congress by the next legislature. Wo aro not sorry that suck plans hnve been formed, 1 for it wilt give time to mi it them; but we un dertake to say that, under no possible state of clrcumstancex, cun such a combination be suc cessful.
