Florida Senator.—Our advices from Tal lahassee indicate that the legislature are hav* lag, or are likely to Lave, some difficulty in the •election of a Senator to succeed Mr. Mallory. The candidates thus far are that gentleman uud If. A. Long, Esq., one of the Buchanan elect- ore. Their strength is very nearly equal. Fail ing to agree upon either wo should not tvondcr if the majority of tho Legislature should not confer the office upon the Hon. A. E. Maxwell, or hie Excellency Governor Broome. Mr. Max well If now in the House of Representatives Got, Broome’s term of office does not expire nntil next fall. Two New Steamers ron the Florida Trade.—A letter from Wilmington, Delaware, bring* the gratifying intelligence that the new iron steamboat St, Marys, to run from Savan nah up the St.Johns river, is nearly completed. She may be expected out here and to take her place on the line early in January. We have the pleasure of announcing, further more, that the re-construction of tho St Johns for the samo trade is being pressed with great energy. She will be finished in a few weeks. Theee two new boats will probably commence running about tho same time. Messrs, dug- horn and Cunningham, tho agents of tho line, deserve well of the public for their spirited endeavors, amid many disasters and discour agements, to facilitate trade and tnwel between this city and East Florida. mnlng4MT. Invention. In another column will ho found an iidvcr- ' tlsemcnt of Mr. George' 1 0. Henry, of Mobile, ! to which wc Invito tho attention of planters. Machinery for tho conversion of Cotton Wool, into Cotton Yarns, or in other . words, machinaiy for spinning up Cotton at Wo gin bouao ot tho planter has long been a deside ratum. To fulfill the requirements it was ne cessary to combine Mmpllc ty with cheapness. Machinery was wanted, not so complicated but Unit negroes could operate it, aud not so costly but that planters, of average wealth could af. ford to purchaso it. Mr. llenr’ys, inventiou is thought to meet these conditions. With .the exception of a superJuteudaut (who cun at tend a half u d. Ren plantations) the work wih be dune by women uud children. The esti mated cost of machinery to spin from die hundred to two hundred bales of cottou is about J(i,000 dollars.' A large sunt it may be thought, yet one that cuu well be expended fur tbosuku of doubling the value of the crop. The iuvolitlou is noticed approvingly by the Journal of Commerce from which we copy tho lung article which appears iu another place. Tho editor of that paper speaks us foilowws : lu uuother column will be found a detailed description of Mr. George G. Henry’s uiodo of manufacturing cotton yarns on plautatious^iud which is destined to work important results,— first, iu favorably influencing the condition of the piauter; second, in the increased advan tage to the consumer of the improved article ; and lastly,in augmenting the productive wealth of the country. The only practicable mode of transportiug cottou from tbo plantations to the manufac tures is to press it iuto bales; and this involves the necessity of opening uud disentangling it, breakiug up tho ttbre, uud causing much oi the substance to fly oil’ iu waste, us well us to weaken the yarn into which it is made. Mr. Henry’s arruugement Is not difficult to adopt, us the cost of the machinery tor the whole pro cess is not equal to tiio enhanced value of the first crop spun, and it avoids the necessity of these destructive operations. Tho cottou is taken immediately from the gin, when it passes through tnachiuery which throws out such for eign substances us the gin has uot removed, aud the cotton is spuu iuto yarns. As the cot tou is quite open uud fleecy, when passiug from the gin, the leaf und trash cun be blown out with much less difficulty than it cun be after the cotton has been matted by handling und packing iuto bales. It is span, too, wbeu the material is oily, and In the fall aud winter months, when it manufactures more freely than it does iu the heat of Bummer. It can be spun by the ordinary unemploy ed labor of the plantation, and u better yam is produced, with much saving of waste. Ou rending the article referred to, it will bo perceived that this improvement gives pro mise of valuable results, and tbero is rea son to anticidpate its complete success and cur ly adoption. It may not be out of place, to remark that Mr. Henry is a native of the South—born In Hew Orleans, uud for many years a merchant of Mobile. During a very interesting interview with him, he informed us that lie expected to have liis invention in operation iu Alabama iu the course ol six weeks. Attention Ladles. There is a bashful youth in the matrimonial market, who, to use hU own language, “de lta to try the fruits of matrimony.” Ho dropp ed a communication to this (fleet in our office* but was so very bashful, that lie forgot to leave his name with it—tVhut a nice husband he would make. How delightfully retailing In these brassy days to meet a youth, oV ,* to get married, willing enn»'* ances, and yet with * * - enough tort to ' ugu to ull appear- .. neart so timid and tt tia. ^uful as to entirely forget his own when the subject is mentioned. Being a bashful man ourself, we have great sympathy Ibr "Bitter Herbs’—but can’t publish bis com- municatlou without responsible name attach, ed—Sorry lor you ladies—Your curiosity must be wonderfully excited and it is positively cruel, that it should uot gratified. contluucd etsveiwfaanlpulation it forato uadorgo iu tho further operations of the extra beatiug lu tho lap machine uud extra carding, that, besides the ascertained large amount of waste some 17 per ceut., which now Ulus off in conse quence of thte; treatment, a large quantity of brokeu tip, mutilated aud inti ihsicaliy distrayed fibre enters Into the yarn, and which it is largely composed. And herein stands out in Iwld relief this great improvements, that the waste by Mr. Henry's process, is diminished at least teu per cent, and the yarn being made of comparative ly unbroken aud umuutiiated fibre, is infinitely stronger, and fiuer yams can bo made of ft with greater easo. Wo all know the length ol tho fibre is what gives strength to the yurn—and the loss ita manipulation tho less^the fibre breaks,’and the le*s ol the downy substance by wdieb it is- serrated, you- remove. Aud to this downy hubstnuce muy be useribed tho adhesion or (Unity of libra, for iibr 0 which makes the purn of cotton tho king of textiles. Then the Improvement: 1st. Presents to the family of man a yam all of fifty per cout., bettertban can bo manufactur ed by tue present processes, aud which secures to itself the markets of the world, detying a competition. 2. The machinery can bo conveuioutly ar ranged uu the pluutation, where cottou is ginn ed, uud very little additional power to that which gins, will also spin it. 3. The maebiuory working like cluck work, with the exception of one ikiliful carder aud spinner to superintend from uue to ball dozen plantations, the little children on each planta tion from 8 to 12 years old. and a few of tho women not required to woik out, will bo fully suffleieutto spin up the crop, in addition to those now employed to manage the giu, aud iu a weeks time these will learu enough to pro ceed successfully with it. 4th. The crop can be spun up in seosou to withdraw any bauds necessary to spring plant ing, that may bavo aided in spinning. 5th. lu eflcct it will be double the exputts of the country, and generate aud set iu operation new improvements and enterprises. We might enumerate one by oue, many other of the numerous Improvements resulting from this invention, but we will simply say iu udditiou that cottou being spuu into yurns, is so compressed, that the same unmber of pouudi that uow covers over a steamboat, exposing it to wet and fire, can, on the sume sized boat, bo stowed and protected uicely under cover. Yam, unlike cotton, is nou-xtra hazardous, and insurance will be lessened on it. The freight and geucrnl chargee being on the potiud, os they will be on un article doubled in value, will be reduced in the descending ratio one half. Bold by uumbera in the ports, its frequent sampling and turning oufJor exami nation. Ac., will be discontinued. There is deducted from tho price which the planter receives for his cotton, wherever he sells, all the losses und charges on it until it reaches Manchester, aud also the estimated waste on it there, while it is being converted iuto yarns, Hencou system which saves ten per cent., of waste, is equivalent to adding teu bales to every hundred on his crop. Besides, the saving 01 waste to and in the ports, from damages, sampling, Ac., with the saving of charges, perhaps ten per ceut, more furulsbcs with other stronger considerations, the motives to determine the planter to the manufacture of his cottou iuto yarns—and the advantage to consumers is, that tbo saving of ten per cent, of wasto la equivalent to ati increase of the American crop of 300,000 hales per nuum. Commission merchants will rejoice In their commissions on au urticio doubled in value, paying them well to represent tbo interests of their principals.
