SDVICES have been received which are not
to be doubted, that a body of our troops,
under the command of Gen. Da&hkow,
has entered Lithuania. It is said that a
union between our court and that of Prus
sia is actually signed.
Genoa , April 14. The rebels of Corsi
ca are this moment laying liege to Baftia,
and if fome foreign power does not fuccour the place, it will
infallibly change mailers.
Rome, April 15. The Pope, with the approbation of
Sacred College, has ordered a large sum of money to be
drawn from the treasure deposited by SixtusrQuintus in the
caflle of St. Angelo, to buy corn for the fubfiilence of the
poor. f
ffar/aw, April 21. M. de Stankiewetz, Envoy from Po
land to the Porte, has just communicated to the Prince Pri
mate the resolution taken by the Sultan to maintain the re
publick in the free election of a king. He has also inform
ed him, that ( a few days after the Beiram, or Lent of the
Tpurks, two officer s-of the Seraglio received an order to re
pair, one to Bendar, the other to Choc?im, to visit the for
tifications of those places, cause them to be/epaired, com
plete the Janiflaries in their several garrisons, and form an
exa£t account of proyifions and ammunition which are found
there; that two numerous divfions of his Highness's troops
at the fame time took the route of those fortrcfies, as also
Spahis [Turkifh Horfe] that ofOczakow; and that
three Pachas of three tails have been nominated to dixc&
these operations.
Florence , April 21. On the arrival of the letters from Leg
horn, a report was immediately spread, that tho malcontents
of the Ille of Corsica have taken Baftia.
* Radjlonne , April -3.. We have just received the following
pieces of important news: First, that a treaty of alliance is
on foot between the courts of Vienna and Berlin ; and le
cbndly, the Grandees of Poland are railing troops one again ft
another, and that numbers of dHbanded German officers have
engaged in their service, to whom 20 ducats are paid to de
fray the expence of their journey. . That the towns in Bos
nia, belonging to the Turks, have lately been supplied with
military llores; that near 50,000 Ruffians are marched to
wards Warsaw; and that nevertheless a considerable party
dfPolilh Nobles have declared themselves in favour of his
Royal Highness Prince Charles of Saxony; and that the
Prince Primate is at the head of this party.
- Rome, April 24. The Duke of York arrived here th£ 15 th
under the title of Earl of Ulster, attended only by two En
glish gentlemen, and-alighted at the Sieor Barazzi’s a very
eminent merchant of this citv. His Highneie moil obliging
ly accepted of several refrelnments that were iftade him, the
fain- evening, by the Grand Prior Corftni, and Don Paul
Borghefe, the two noblemen appointed to attend him. The
next day the constable Colonna went to pay him the com
pliment of an invitation from the King of Naples.
Hamburgh, April 27. They write from Pohfh Prussia, that
three camps are intended to be formed there this sum mer;
one near Koniglberg, another near Vohlau, and the third a
long the Warta, upon the borders of Mazovia, a province of
the republick of Poland.
Hanover , April 27. A courier from London has brought
advice, that the King's intended voyage to hi* German do- 1
minions is put off to next year.
Poland , April 28. The nearer the time of the diet of con
vocation approaches, the greater the fermentation seems in
this country. We should not even be fnrprife'd to fee the
opening of the aftembly put off, and to hear of the convening
of the Arriere Ban. In tne mean time, the Ruffian troops arc
drawing near to Warsaw, and form a kind of circle round
that capital. Their Generals, however, constantly declare,
That it is all for the good of the republick, and with the foie
view of maintaining the freedom of ele&ion. It is said that
the Ottoman Porte has declared to our Ministry, that it looks
upon a Prince of the house of Saxony as a Pialle, and having
consequently as much right to the Crown as anny natural
born lubjed of the repubTick.
• Rome, April 28. The Duke of York assisted at all the func
tions of the Holy Week, in the Rafilickof St. Peter, for the
performing of which the Pope repaired, on the 10th, from
th* Quirinal to the Vatican. Our senate has presented his

The advices from Lithuania inform us, that a confederacy
is formed there, of which the Count Brcoitowiki, grand e.
query of that, part of the republick, is chosen Marlhal. Upl
wards of 5000 gentlemen have fubferibed to this confedera
cy. They all repair to Wilda, and seem, according to thelb
advices, to be certain of the support amd protection of the 1
Ruffians.
Vienna , May 2. It is said here for certain, that a nume+
rous army of Tartars is marching this very moment towards
Russia. News, if true, which confirms the account of the
declaration made by the Sultan in fhvourofa free election
of a King of Poland. Our court has also an eye upon the
republick,’ relatively to which she holds frequent council
ot state.
Ratifionne , May 3. A report prevails here that France, in
concert with the court of V ienna, interests Kerlelf warmly
in behalf of Prince Charles of .axony in order to place him
on the throne of Poland; but there is room to doubt of the
authenticity of this news, when we recollcCt {hat the said?
crown has declared by hex'ambafTador at Warsaw, that /he
would not recommend a candidate, and that lhe was rcfolved
not pnly not to confine the republick in her freedom of chuf
ing.a king but also to employ all possible means to maintain
her in it.
VerfnUs, May 3. The Dauphinefs was brought to-bed
of a Princess the 3d instant, about three in the morning.
The fame day the whole royal family, and several of the no
bility, were present at the king's chapel immediately after
mass, to assist at the christening of the new-born Princws,
who was baptized by the names of Elizabeth-Philippa-Maria-
Helena ’ The Dukede Bci+y in the name of the infant Doa
Philip, and Madam Adelaide in the name of the
Dowager of Spain were sponsors.
Florence, May 3. The Duke of York left this place this
morning at four o’clock, with an intention to reach Bolog
na this evening. His Royal Highness has expreded the great*
est fatisfaCtion of the attentions that have been shewn to hint
both by his government and at Rome. The Duke propqf
ed to-stay two days at Bologna, and then to go to Parma
and Eeggio, where both the Duke of Parma and the Duke
of Modena have made dispositions to receive him.
Hamburgh, May 8. Tne report of 40,000 Ruffians having
entered Poland, is not true; but there is indeed such an ar
my on the confines of Lithuania; and on the frontiers of the
empire, next to Poland, there is an army atleaft as numerous
as that we have just mentidned.
London , May 5. His Majesty's ftiip Tweed, with four
fail more that are now in Portsmouth harbour, are ordered
for Newfoundland- They arc to join Commodore Pallifer
at Plymouth.
Yesterday morning about ten o'clock, came on, before
Lord Chief Justice Pratt, in the Court of Common Pleas,
Guildhall, an aftion brought by Mr. Arthur Bearomore
against Mr. Nathaniel Carrington, and three other of his
Majesty's meflengers. In the course of the trial it appeared
that Mr. Bcardmore had been taken into custody on the 11th
of November, forafuppofed connexion iVith the Monitor,
and confined till the 17th, two days of which he was not
buffered the use of either pen or paper, nor permitted to con*
verse with any of his friends, but in.the preface pf thn
meflenger. Nay, it was mentioned, that when applicate*
was made by the then Lord Mayor of London to ball’him,
the proper officer who was to examine him, neglected ii on
this consistent and reasonable account, that the Monitor*
were much too voluminous to be infpeded.
Mr. Jonathan Scott, the former publi/her of the Monitor,
in order to prove the justice of Mr. Beardmore’s
ment, pre fen ted a paper to the court, setting forth that this
gentleman,, together with the Rev. Mr, .Entick, Dr.
oeare, and others, were the authors; that the two latter hid
a salary of one hundred a yefir for their writings, and that
himfelf (Mr. Scott) was allowed the profits of the falc for
his trouble, after the neceftary expenses attending the
hlication were difeharged.
Such being the groundwork of the chargeand defence,
the examination of witneftes, and the pleadings on botir
sides, continued till about a quarter after four, ufhen it
