It is (aid a neighbouring power has far exceeded the in
tent and meaning of the late treaty* in prefaming to fend any
Uup of war upon die coaiis of Newfoundland, of which pro
per notice has been taken in the late memorial transmitted
to that court.
July 2. The Brittannia, Capt. Rouse, arrived in the
Downs from China, brings an account of the loss of the
£arl Temple, Capt. Fortier, and all the men peritiied.
Capt. Fortier died fome time before this accident: his death
was occasioned by the loss of a teg, which wa9 (hot off id
fome fray he had in India. This gentleman commanded
the Antigallican privateer, which caused so much conversa
tion in Europe.
They write from Poland of the 15th inti, that the Prote
tiants and other dissenters in that kingdom had folycited pro
tection and assistance from fome certain foreign powers.
Account of an intended duel between bis late Majesty King George
the Second , and Frederick William , late King of PruJJia .
“ perfonal enfnity which had fubfitied between the
JL two monarchs above-mentioned, even from their
early years, and often to the no small perplexity of their mi
ni licrs, went so far, (fays Baron Bieffeld) that, as he is in
formed from a good quarter, they conceived the very Angu
lar design of gratifying it in a duel. King George had al
ready made choice of Brigadier Sutton for his second, and
the King of Prussia of CoL Derfchau: The territory of Hil
defehiem had been pitched on for the meeting: His Britari
nick Majesty was then at Hatiover, and his Pruflian Majesty
was come as far as Saltzdahl, near Brunswick. Baron
Borck, his mlnifter at London, and lately difmifled from
that court in a very abrupt manner, being come to the king
his matier, at Saltzdahl, found him in such a violent paflion,
that he did not think it ‘advifeable direflly to oppose his de
sign ; but to gain time feigned to approve the extraordinary
combat which that prince meditated, and he even offered to
carry the challenge. But coming into the king's apartment
an hour after, he took the liberty of speaking to him in this,
manner: “ Sire, I allow that your majesty’s quarrel is not
to be terminated any other way than by a duel; but your
majetiy being but just raised from adangerous sickness, and
your health being still precarious, ftiould you be taken with
a relapfc the day before the affair, or perhaps at the very
time, what would the world fay, and how would the king of
England ma .e his boasts ? How many scandalous conduc
tions would be put on this accident? What an odious suspi
cion might it not bring on your majesty’s courage ? These
things considered, do not you think, Sire, it would be bet
ter to stay a fortnight?” The king is said to have come in
to these reasons, though with fome difficulty ; the challenge
was not sent; the ministers on both tides gained time; tne
cholcr of both parties evaporated, and the following year
the quarrel was made up.**
Give us leave to add a (hort but less serious anecdote
concerning Frederick. It seems heJWas very far from being
favourably disposed to literature, and, by way of contempt,
would now and then propose to the academy of sciences, at
Berlin, meer trifles or jokes. The academy’s answer, in
deed, was generally of no better turn. One day, for in
stance, his Majesty sent them the following question :
“ What might be the phytical causes why two glafles tilled
with champaigtie, and struck one against the other, the
found, instead of being shrill and clear as that of two glafles
filled with any other wine, was faint and dull ?” The aca
demicians returned for answer, •• That their pockets not
reaching champaigne, they were ignorant of the effea.”
The king, to convince them of the phenomenon, sent them
a dozen of flafks; they drank the wine, without elucidating
the royal problem.” London Mag. for March 1764.
