V Anew scene of horror in Russia, has fumifhea occasion
to many reflections, which prudence obliges me to pass over
in silence, until the circumitances and causes of this ft range
event are laid amply before the publick. The event is re
ported as follows: One MierenhofF, a Lieutenant in the re
giment of Smolenfko, came with a detachment of about 30
.men, by night, the 15th of last month, to the fortrefs of Slut
telbofg, where the young Prince Ivan, or John, was removed
/ome time ago, by order of the empress from the place of
confinement that has long been alotted to his unfortunate
family. This lieutenant presented to the governor of the for
trefs, a forged order from the empress, jto the following pur

“ to set the Prince at liberty/* The governor Rooking upon
this declaration as an imposture, refufed to comply #ith it,
;fhut the gates upon MierenhofF, and Ordered his men to arms.
MierenhofF on the other hand, seemed to make preparations
for forcing the governor to a compliance; upon which the
latter entered the apartment of the young prince, whom he
gnurdered in his bed. The firft blow was but flight, and on
ly served to awake the unfortunate prince, who straggled
fome time for his life, and even broke the governor’s sword
in the fcuffie; but assistance was called for, and another af
iaflm appeared, who finifhed the horrid work. When the
.unhappy Ivan had expired, the governor opened the gates
ot the fortrefs, exposed the dead body, ftabbcd in above ten
places, to the vieyy of Mierenhoff and his company, and said
in a taunting and insolent manner, “ There is ycfur emperor,
lct *>im now head you; he will undoubtedly make a fine fi
