Jan. $. Certain advices arc received, that the Spaniards
have already formed one encampment on thy borders of Por
tugal near Almeida, and are in great forwardnefs with ano
ther* to consist of 15 battalions and 24 squadrons. The
King of Portugal has ordered all his officers to j6in their
corps.
Private tetters from Cadiz fay, that four ships of the line,
three frigates and a bomb ketch, are filling out in that port,
intended, it is thought, for an expedition against the Por
tuguese settlements in the Brazils,
Last night an express arrived at the Secretary of State's
office, ana this morning we hear the fame was laid before
his Majesty. It is said to come from France* and to have
brought a conclusive agreement relative to certain matters
lately contested.

We are informed the last Weft-India mail dispatched con

They write from Leghorn, that the court of Turin have
appointed five xebecks of war to fail for Sardinia, to watch
the motions of the French frigate* appointed to cruize for
fome weeks in the straits of St. Bonafacio.

foundland station, we hear, will be countermanded on ac*
count of the arrival of commodore Pallifer.
Jau. 8. A speedy commencement of hnftilities on the
coast of Guinea is now looked upon as hardly avoidable,
considering the naval strength of the French on that station,
who are aftually (aid to have five men of war of the line,
besides frigates and transports, with a number of land for
ces on board.
Sunday night diijpatches were sent off 10 the Earl of R<kh
fort at Madrid, which are said to contain express orders for
his Excellency to demand of the Spaniih Miniitry, with what
view the present naval and military armaments of the king
dom are now fitting out, and how far they may regard his
Britannick Majesty’s good ally the King of Portugal.

This morning the purser of the Albion Indiaman, Caps.
Larkens, came to the India House, with the melancholy

land, where (he soon went to pieces. The captain,
and crew, are all saved; ana by their diligence have like

had it not been for the violence of the wind, and the feat
running exceeding high.

The balance of the accounts of thb French prifooers,

By letters just received from a gentleman in Weft-Florida
we learn, that they have good hopes of soon producing co
chineal, in as great perfection, in that province, as in any
part of the Weft-Indies; the cultivation of the (everal mate
rials ncccflary for this valuable manufafture, having, on
repeated trials, appeard to be very much favoured by the
climate and foil.
