Leeward 1 Hands. And tho* the IHands were not surveyed and
properly prepared for falc, fothat the commi(Boners could
not give purchasers the opportunity they coaid have withed,
for to inform themfelvcs with regard to the qualify of the fc
vera! lots, yet the lands in general fold at a much higher
rate than was expelled. Indeed fome few lots went at little
more than the minimum, but in general they fold from a
bout 15!. to 431. ftcrling an acre for the cleared lands,
and about one-fifth for the uncleared. One lot of about too

Carpenter [Attakullakulla] and Great Doctor, two head
men deputed by tne Cherokee nation to enquire into the

S r-.u- JJj 22. By Capt. Philips who
arrived here ltd! Friday from Newfoundland, we are inform
ed, that so ,r men of war were arrived there from England,
and that one of them had been to St. Peter's, where (he sent
in a tender, who seized three Eoglith and nine French vef
feis, that were trading there contrary to the late treaty of
peace, and brought them to St. John’s that a French man
of war was lying in the harbour of St. Peter’s at the fame
time, which wa> ordered to depart immediately, other* ife
the Fnglith commodore would fend for them alfojupon which
they began to make preparations for failing. Two of the
veticls that were fei/ed belonged to Cape Ann, and the o
thersto Marblehead. It is fatd the Governor of Newfound
land was determined to prevent all trade with the French in
those parts for the future. Wc alio learn that the greater
part of French bills drawn there had come back profiled.
AVirpwv, (V*/, *J-Ay 22. The Capn. Dupuv and
Wceden arrived since our lall in five week* fruin Cayenne,
who kept company during the whole of their outward
und homeward pallages to and from that place. They br;t g
advice, that the endeavours of the French to efhbliih a let.
firmer, t to the leeward of Cayenne had proved ineffectual,
<nving to the prevalence of a contagion* diHemper among the
Settlers, of w hich, it wa- said, 10 or 15000 had died, and
the remainder were moving ctf. I'he cause affigncd for this
gnat mortality w s the diuimiiarity ts the climate to that
of their ow n country.

Its immediate effects were like thole of ar earthquake, every
individual apprehending certain ruin. In this province our
minds begin to grow calm. We fee with ctmi.ity thawhe
stroke will recoil with double force to yourfclves, and ulti
mately be the raoft beneficial measure for us that could poifi
bly be invented, i will tell you its present benefits. We
have the pieafure to fee the eatremeit frugality assumed by
all ranks of people; every article of luxury is banilhed ; and
those aie efiectnrd the bell patriots, and mo ft in faftion
whose cloaths are moil thread bare and patched. I finctrely
pity you, and other creditors, upon whom the storm mud
fall the heavier ft. You compute this colony owes to Great-
Britain a million ; ycu know we cannot raise a mite towards
the discharge of it. Our pros incial debt amounts to 250,c0d.
The new duties and (lamps will complete our bankruptcy,*
and if we coin paper, it cannot be legal tender, and cf
courfc useless. But you will not be the only fuffertrs. The
publick will lose more in its revenue on tobacco than it will
gain by (lamps. We cultivate that commodity to exchaute
lor your raanufaflures, which, we (hill soon convince yoj,
we have no need of.”
