Same day Capt. Gavin Cochrane, commanding his Maje
ily*s trooDS in this province and Georgia, failed for Nevv-
York. The said coptmand devolves to Capt. Ralph Philips
lately arrived here from commanding at Fort Augusta and
Fort Moore.
On the 30th and 31 ft of July last, a hurricane did conG
derable damage in the Well-Indies ; its greatell violence
was from the south-east. At Barbados fix Hoops and a schoo
ner were driven alhore at Bridgetown, fome of them loft,
and several other veflels in the bay damaged. At St. Chri
ilophers fix large schooners were forced’ aftiore, and many
veflels put out to sea. At Antigua it was not felt. At Do
minica the storm was dreadful; in the space often minutes
every veflel was driven out to sea, nothing could refill its im
petuosity, large trees were torn from their roots, ard their
branches twilled off in a surprising manner, several schoon
ers were driven on Ihore, and many lives loft. The church
and the King's magazine were entirely deilroyed; the bar
racks, the garrison hospital, and many private dwellings,
were greatly damaged. The ilorm extended to Martinico,
where many veflels were driven alhore and loft. At Gua
dalupe it raged violently, a 40 gun Hiip of war was 1011, fe
vcral Ihips and other veflels driven afliore, and many put
out to sea. The day after, Aj*guft 1 ft, a ftiock of an earth
quake was felt at Antigua. /
The amount of the ialpf and leases of land in the lfland of
St. yincent is said to be one hundred and two thousand
pounds nine (hillings llerling. Thefales in the ceded islands
lor 1766 begin at Dominica February 17th; at Granada A
pril 10th; at St. Vincent May 28th.
By the proceedings of the Aftembly of Barbados, publilh
cd in the Barbados Mercury, it appears, that letters had
been received by Governor Pinfold from Admiral Tyrrel
and Capt Knowler of the Milford, giving accounts, that
the laid Captain being sent to oblerve what Ihe French were
doing at Cayenne and the Triangles, he difeovered several
Ihips of war and other vefiels in the river Cayenne, and a-
Ihore a great number of tents and fome buildings, and ima
gined rhe French wore laying up a very great magazine (ap
plied from North-Amcrica, Capt. Knowler having seized a
brigantine from Philadelphia cleared out for Barbados with
provisions and naval (lores, but by invoices and bills of lad
ing, bound for Cayenne, and had letters to the French Go
vernor there. The said brigantine was condemned in Bar
bados for illicit trade, and by papers found on board it ap
pears, that Meftrs. John Rcmfoin and Thomas Riche of Phi
ladelphia have entered into contrail for supplying the French
at Cayenne.
By an aft pasted last feflion, Bar Iron and Wood or Lum
ber of all kinds, the growth or production of any of his
Majesty’s colonies or plantations in America, may be export
ed from thence to Ireland, Madeira, the Azores, and any
part of Europe southward of Cape-Finiftcrre, upon giving
‘bond with security not to land the fame in any other part of
Europe than above mentioned, except Great-Britain. 1 lie
fame aft allows American Bar-Iron to be exported from and
carried coaftwifc in Great-Britain, and afeertains the fees of
custom houle officers in America.
Sept. 11. Advices of the frelheft dates from London as
sure us, that neither the Duke of Newcastle, Lord ‘1 emplc,
nor fundrjr other refpcftable names, are to have any (hare
in the ad min ift rat ion.
The aflembjy of Barbados hath direfted all the papers
relating to the French enrerprizes at Cajrnnc and the 1 ri
anglcs, as well as those concerning the Philadelphia
contrail for supplying the French, both mentioned in our
last, to be transmitted home to the agent for that island,
with orders to lay them before his Majctly s ministers.

notice, that from the said firft of November the annual fub
feription will be fourteen (hillings llerling. Such of his
fubbribers as are Hill willing to encourage a work ol this
kind, by continuing their (üblcriptions, are requelled t>>

sible, in order that he may judge from their number if he
