WrJTH the refpeflful attention due to a letter from you, \vc

Conveyed; left the filoncc even of thole among the presenters, not par

lay before you the whole of our piocecdings ami intention* : Intentions,
which f we flatter ourfclvcs, would be foine apology, even had we been
ignorantly led into a breach of a poiitive law.
Satipday night it was told, the gentlemen confined were not to he bail
ed, aod that it was experted they would be sent back prisoners ‘he next
afternoon ; that having no other resource, they intended to apply to the
governor by and would be obliged to their friends to prnent
it# They found- bn this occasion more friends than they expected,
all w<re touched, with, their very particular circumftauces, ail freely of
fered their service, (few or none who had opportunity declined )
, Th t e memorial wu a request tp the governor to imerpofc, whctherby
taufihg bail to be accepted, or otherwile, we were not iwjomied, for none
of u* read it, but heard it was urawn up bv proper adyice. It was decent
to accompany it with.a. petition ; feveral.motives offered for so doing; no
time was to be loft, as soon as 4 fair copy could be made out it, muil be

Into the molt mortifying circumftauces men.could fall into’; yet, so un

the lead exception to a fipgle lenience. They thought it would be bus
|aftice to these gentlemen, to give the ftj-ongclt tcftiinony df their cha
raflers, and the eftepm in they stood in the country : They thought’
it hhmanity tb alleviate the Odium which their qnhappy fituatiou mull
throw on those charaders, and to obviate,.V s far as in them lay, the
fOnfequence likely to ensue in their affairs intcrclls : In fine, that it
was a proper occafioit urinform those who had not opportunities of being
acquainted with this province, that an imprellion very different had been
ifceie here in regard to the perpetration of the outrage 911 Mr. Walker,
from what may have been given In England.
* T© lap open these their lentinients, they flattered themfelyes would not
be unacceptable, and as they thought it i cumbent 00 them to propose

They never presumed to prefcfioe in what manner authority was to be in
