N my Letter No. *2. I informed your Lordfcip of the Origination of
calling an Assembly of Reprefeotatives under th “*■ of * f"IT
of Cenvontton, notwirh Handing that is the B * ,ne J o [. th * ® ody * the M *®
bets alio are all called Committees; so that for difit®aicn lake, we moft
call the body the Contention. This C mention ia now fitting, they met
on Thursday, and did nothing that morning bat choose a Chauman and a
Cleric, via. the late Speaker and the ‘Clerk of the House. The fame
abrning 1 ptepated a mefTage to this Convention, ard left it with Mr,
Oliver'the Scceury to deliver in the afternoon. I wrote it wholly in my
band, ard my name so written was rn the ti le 8 bat an it was not under
fiened by me they tefufed to receive it This wat only to gain time to
lend me a me&ge before they acknowledged the receipt of mine. As
they print what they do, your Lordihip wtll have the r own account of
these proceedings. ‘1 he t rtr davs >all week, they kept open doors, -
waa then abfcnt. The twodays this *eek they have kept the doors shut |
w. ia with them. Whatever further traa pires 1 will inform yoar Lord
&ip of,it. . . ...
ft ia now made a great question in what manner Great Britain. wu re
lent this proceeding! for certainly, at the fountain head it was intended
to provoke a icfentmeot, the great prir.cip’e of the Ltiion being to raise
ard blow up fiie. Some fay, and especially in the Convention itfelf,
that toe persons aficmbling would be by aft of Parliament rendered inca
pable of lervinv in ai y publick office. Bat this fetms to be at once too
‘Confined, and too gcieml acenfure. Ihe towns who cboie thtfc depu*
ties (njtxt to that whoifiued the fummens) are aniwernble for this Con
vention ; and if they are a majority ot the towrns who fend members as
their own accounts at the lowest afTert, the province is anfwcrable it is
therefore concluded that the aid probable consequence will be the for
feiture of the charter. If this is the -vorft, it is an event nod devoutly
to be desired by every well wither to this province.

My Lord,
IN my Letter No. 2;, I gave your Lordihip an account of the pro
ceedings of the Convention, in this 1 parpofe to finifb it. They fat
Cixaftiy a week, and their last aft I hereby fend your Lordihip a printed
of, this and wha> 1 bcfoie Tent being all that has been printed. They
have besides, as I am to and, prepared a petition to the King in the fan e, or
pearly the 1 me terms as the former, and have sent it to Mr Deßerdt,
jfcfith a long letter of inftruftions, among which is, as ia said, a direftion
to five it into the King’s own haad. But lam not certain of this, as
business was done with a kind of secrecy, into which it is scarce
while to pry.
t chief oblervs’ion npn theft writings is of their moderation, fj
♦try different r rom the temper of those who cal'ed this meeting. This is
Kcoapted for many ways : many of the deputies came down with induc
tions and difpofitioa to prevent the Boftoners involving the province in the
.cpnfequences of their own mad devices: many of them were, from the
Jhdginning sensible of the improp iety and danger of this proceeding, and
| were defirou?, by a moderate conduft, to correft the one and ward off the
fther. My message (which was said to be very high, tho* I hope not too
igh for die occafioo) aitho’ it did not disperse them, had the good effeft
to Iteep them in awe Herce it was that —, when he joined them, was
perfe&bf tame j and his colleague Adams when he attempted to launch
matin t holing uage u fd in the House of Re prefen tatives, was presently
fi fenced. Ana dow these people aflame t > themselves the merit of the
Moderation of thoiewhom they called together for very different purposes
However therefore this temperate conduft of these deputies may in feme
aeafurt* apologize for the towns who deputed them and for themselves
it makes no excuse for those who took uooo themselves
toeau them ogther. Por whoeer reads the minutes of the town-meet
ing in which the fammnning this Convention was ordered, will easily
wOrcnve that it was intended to have very different effefts from those which
