New-York, January 15th, 1770. Brutus.
N. B. Although the above Paper is dated the 15th, it did notmakc its Appear
ance before Tuesday, the isth j to that from what has been related, it is evident
they intended 10 cut down the Pole the firlt Opportunity, if Brutus had not been
publish ed.
About 8 o'Clok on Tuesday Night, three Soldiers were difeovered at work,
about the Pole, and fun-dry Pei ions cloaked, lying down behind a ip]it Canoe near
it } theie were guarded by a Number of armed Soldiers in an old Houle not far from
it, which has been a temporary Barrack for feme of them; and on this Occaiion,
fiom its Vicinity, femJ as a good Watch and Guard House to effect their Deiign,
■without being so much expend to he difeovered by their Officers, as they would
be if ihe.r Charter* we it; at a greater Pittance from the Pole. Soon after they
were difeovered, an Explofiou wa< heard at the Pole, which proved to be the
burning of Powder in the Manner, and for the Purpole before-mentioned,
which ipiit it. Immediately thereafter they retired, expelling that the Noise of the
Explofiou would alarm the Citizen*: ‘I he Alarm being accordingly given, many
of them event up to the Fields and continued at Mr. Montanye s Houle till about
10 o'Cictck, wftjch for that Time prevented the Soldiers doing any more to the
Accotnpiiflnnent cf their Deiign. Ibe Citizens that retired femn the Fields find
ing that the boldur* were dilpolcd to pcriili in insulting the inhabitants, drew up
the ‘Relblauons that have been puhiiihed, with an Intention to propole them to
tiic People that were tomeu the next Day. The Soldiers, determined to execute
their ProjeS, availed theml'elves of the chad Hour of Night; 2nd at one o'clock
they cut down the Pole, fawtd and fpiit it in Pieces and carried thun to Mr.
Montanye s Door, where they threw them down, and laid, let us go to our Bai'-
•acks.
1 When the Citizens convened the next Day, for the Purpofc mentioned in Bru
tus, many of them esaiperated at the Pole's being cut down, and Iccing the Vi
cm.ty of the old House above-mentioned, to the Place where the Pole llood ; and
•pon thtir being informed of the Ufc that haJ been m;idt of it in cutting down the
polo, and many Perlbns having been insulted from Time to Time, by the Inhabi
tants of it; they were defirotio that Application (hould he mr.de to the Corporation,
Wbofe Property it is, to pull it down. After the Qucftiom reciting the Bufi-
Beis of th Day were put, it was judged nfeefiary, in order to aopeafe the People,
r*kfk thorn whether theComralttee they were to appoint thouid maKe Application to
Rift Corporation, to rtcjueft that the *>kl House might be- pulled down? Which
they aafwored in the Aihrmattve, accompanied with ioud Acclamations. Imme
litfoly thereupon* Number of the Soldiers drew theirCutiaifes and Bayonets, and
defirtd the- Inhabitants to come and puli it down. This new Ail of Inference
would have been productive of a very terrible Afirav, if the M gilhates and Orfi.
Mrs had not jnterpofei. While the People were colleßing in the Fields, a Num
ber Os Sailors went aiotlg the Docks and turned ashore all the Soldiers they found
work on board the Veflels, and obliged such of them as were at work in Stoics
tbquU’it.’ I he-Soldiers, Kill bent on further Intuits to the Citizens, on Fridav,
•be-1 9 th, puhlilhed the following Paper, and went in Pofles thiough the Streets’
ptming them tip at the uooft publick Places of die City, and threw fame of them
