Ji o c t r 5 . Sons of Steam. The following ext'ellent lyric is from ihc pen of G. \V. Cutter, Esq-, of Covington, Kv It will be read with interest by many of our readers. Harness me down with your iron bands, Be sure of your curb and rein, For I scorn the strength ofyour puny hnnd g As the tempest scorns a chain *, How I laughed as 1 Iny concealed from sight; For many a countless hour, At the childish boast of human might, And the pride of human power! When I'saw an army upon the land, A navy upon the seas, Creeping along a snail-like band, Or waiting a wayward breeze ; When I marked the peasant faintly reel; With the toil which he faintly bore ; As he turned at the tardy wheel, Or tugged at the weary oar : When I measured the painting courser'sspecd; The flight of the carrier dove, As they bore a law u king decreed ; Or the lines of impatient love ; I could not but think how the world would feel, As these were outstripped nfur, When I should be bound to the rushing keel ; Or chained to the flying car ! Ha ! ha ! ha ! They found meat Inst; They invited me fortli at length ; Hurrah ! hurrah ! the water’s o’er, The mountain’s steep decline ; Time—space have yielded to my power— The world—the world is mine ! The giant streams of the queenly West, And the Orient floods divine. The ocean pales where’er I sweep To hear my strength rejoice, And the monsters of the briny deep, Cower trembling at my voice. I carry the wealth and lord of earth ; The thoughts of the godlike mind, The wind Ings after going forth, The lightning is left behind ; In tI)Q darksome depths oftlie fathomless mine, My tireless arm dotli play, Where the rocks ne’er saw the sun’s decline, Or the dawn oftlie glorious day, I bring earth’s glittering jewels up, From the hidden caves below, And I make the fountain’s granite cup With chrystal gush o'erflow ! I blow the bellows, I forgo the steel, In all the shops of trade ; I hammer the ore, and turn the wheel, Where my arms of strength arc made, I manage the furnace, the mill, the mint 1 carry, I spin, I weave ; And all my doings 1 put in print, On every Saturday eve. I’re no nffisc.le to weary, no breast to decay, Mo bones to bo “laid on the shelf, And soon I intended you may “go and play,’ While I manage the world myself. But harness me down with your iron He sure of your curb and rein ; For l Hcorn the strength of your puny hands, As the tempest scorns the chain &gvt cu 11 ura l. Look to the Gardens.— The Garden seems to have been in all places, and in a!j ages, a peculiar and favored spot. Adam and Eve lived in one, but were not thought worlliy to retain their places, after having jost their innocence—the Saviour’s chosen spot was Gethsetnane, and “ in the garth-v was a spulchre,” where body at last was deposited. If a country to be a pleasant, and desirable place of residence we are told “ that it is the garden spot of the world.” And yet how many persons who have acres of land, which might be con verted into “a widerness o sweets,” live contentedly for years, without enjoying the delights of such a spot. Perchance there is alittle patch somewhere about their premises, which they dignify with the title of garden, but the vegetables are “ few and far between” and flowers “ are out of the question.” They never feel any thing of the pride, with which Diocletian pointed to ilkj cabbage lie had reared.— Now is the time to read, and heed the following excellent remarks upon the sub ject : “No one can be duly said to live who lias not a garden. None but those who have enjoyed it can appreciate the satisfac tion—the luxury—of sitting down to a ta ble spread with the fruits of one’s own plan ing and culture. A bunch of radishes— a few heads of lettuce—taken from the garden of a summer’s morningfor breaWast, or a mess of green peas, or sweet corn, is quite a different affair from market in a dying condition, to be put in the cellar for use. Ami a plate of strawberries or rasp berries lose tmne of their peculiar flavor by passing directly from the bed to the cream without being jolted about in baskets until they have lost all form and comeli ness. And yet how many in the smaller cities and villages of our country possessing ev ery futility for a good garden, either thro’ ignorance or indolence ore deprived of this source of comfort.” BLANKS. More of the Bonders resulting from the judicious use of BOTANIC MEDICINES. rpHE following communication appeared in J the last Georgia Telegraph, and must be re plcte with interest to all similarly afflicted. Mr. Smith is a printer by profession, and is employ-1 ed in that office—he relates his experience, w inch after all is the best criterion by which to judge of the value of remedies. Advertisements and high sounding statements may be set forth, and thus give an ephemeral character and existence to remedies, which when judged by this test, lose all their value, and become defunct; not so, however, with those which have thusbeen test ed, and have passed through the ordeal; for of them, we state what has occurred, and from that deduce what may he expected. But to the com munication, it will speak for itself. Macon, Jan. 11, 1850. S. J. Ray, Editor Georgia Telegraph : Dear Sir :—While so many certificates of individuals living off at great distances arc ap pearing in the papers commendatory of Bal sams, Syrups, Pills and Powders, I think it hut right that medical research and superior success of some of our practitioners at home should he made known to our community, that those of our neighborhood who are afflicted may not one ly save their health hut their money also, and at tiie same time encourage the efforts of those who would give character and consequence to this section of the Union. 1 have been led to these remarks by the teachings of my ow n experi ence : About seven years ago I was attacked with a disease of the liver and lungs, accompanied with hoernorrhagu or spitting of blood, witli severe and most harrassing and distressing cough, cold sweats of nights, with a wasting diarrhser, and a great part of the time confined to my bed, and so debilitated generally, that I could do but lit tle in the way of business 1 thus continued for over five years, making every effort during that time to regain my health. I first applied to thephyscians of Savannah, where I then resided, bat their efforts failed to relieve me. I then tried Houck’s Panacea for a long time—then VV’istar’s Balsam of Wild Cherry,&c., till 1 had spent hundreds of dollars in their purchase, and still found myself as bad oft' ns before. I then applied to your townsman, Dr. M. 8. Thomson, who I am happy to say, after treating my esse some 6 or 7 months, restored me to sound, and I believe to permanent health, for I am now and have been for the last 18 months in the enjoy- uninterrupted health. This is my ex jJHßice, and I doubt not you will agree with me in the opinion, that I have good reasons for recommending the Doctor and his remedies in cases of this kind, far above the most eminent physicians whose stkill 1 had tested, and the far famed and much boasted balsams and panaceas with which 1 had been dosed. Let others do likewise, if they would he cured, and that they may not perish for lack of knowledge, I here by request that you will give publicity to ir.y statement in jour widely circulating sheet, and much oblige yours, respectfully, JOHN 11. SMITH. The following letters are given, not so much on account of the facts the)' contain, though they are important, as to give an idea or specimen of many of the same kind that are borne to the subscriber by almost ever)- Mail from the North, South, East and West. Old Dr. Townsend ;» now a boat 70 years of nge, nnd has long been known as the AUTHOR nnd UiSCOVEREtt of the GKJYUIJTK O RIGLYAL “ TO fVJfURMD BAR SAVA HU. f,A. ** Hcir.g poor, he was compelled to hndt its manufnctNre, by which menus it has l»een kept out of mar ket, nnd the sales circumscribed to those only who had proved its worth, and known its value. It had reached ! ihe ears of many, nevertheless, as those persons wfcbfcsA been healed of sore diseases, and saved from death, pro claimed its excellence and wonderful HEALING POWER. Knowing, many years ago. that he had, by his skill science and experience, devised an article which would be of incalculable advantage to mankind w hen the me&Qs would l»e furnished to bring it into universal notice, when its inestimable virtues would be known and appreciated. This time has come, the means are supplied ; this GRAND AND VNF.qUALLKD PREPARATION is manufactured on the largest scale, and is called for throughout the length and breadth of the land, especially as it is found incapable of degeneration or deterioration. Unlike young s*. i’ Townsend’s, it improves with age, and never changes, but for the better : because it is prepared on scirntijic pnncrjiled by a scientific man. The highest knowl edge of Chemistry, and the latest discoveries of the art, have nil been brought into requisition in the manufacture of the Old Dr’s Sarsaparilla. The Sarsaparilla root.it is well known to medical men, contains many medicinal pro jxsrties, and some properties which are inert or useless, and others, which if retained in prewiring It for use, produce fermentation and acid, which is injurious to the system. Some of the properties of Sarsaparilla are so volatile, that they entirely evaporate and are lost in ihe preparation, if they are not preserved by a scientific process, known only to those experienced in its manufacture. Moreover, these volatile principles, which fly off in vapor, or as an exhala tion. under heat, are the very essential medical properties of the root, which give to it all its value. Any person can boil or stew the root till they get a dark colored liquid, which is more from the coloring matter In the root than from any thing else: they can then strain this Insipid or vapid liquid, sweeten with sour molasses, ind then call it ” SARSAI'ARII.LA EXTRACT or SY- K(JI\" Hut Lich is not the nrticle known ns the GENUINE OLD DR. Pre|»aicd in this way, it is made the most powerful agent in the Cure of innumerable diseases. Hence the reason why we hear commendations on every side in its favor by men, women, and children. We find it doing wonders in the cure of CONSUMPTION, DYSPEPSIA , and LIVER CON PLAINT, and in RHEUMATISM.
