MEN AND BOYS THROWING DICE FOR
MONEY IN THE PUBLIC STREETS
ON SUNDAY AFTERNOON.
WHAT OUR REPORTER SAW.
“Frog Town,” or the north-west end
of Robertsville is too familiar to the pub
lic for us to describe its locality and
: lowliness, and birth of crimes. Tne
headquarters of thieves, murderers and
the filthiest of all that is human reside
there. The gambier who makes his
daily and nightly rounds armed with a
keen-edged bowie knife, or razor, pistol
or huge stick, and, but very little cash,
in search of “a quiet game” or, some
poor “sucker” to “work,” for “a 1 ! he’s
worth;” there too “hangs out.” Some
of the most indecent, ragged and filth
iest looking women under the influence
of bad whiskey, can at all times be seen
on the streets rearing, pitching and
cursing. The language used by these
inhuman wretches while in the above
described state, when respectable per
sons are passing is ridiculous, and
s nods unpleasant to the ear
While a representative of the Echo
was in that vicinity on Sunday after
noon last, he saw large groupes of full
grown men and boys on their knees in
the public streets, huddled togeth r
throwing dide for money, cursing and
damning at eackotherin a very boister
ous manner. hundreds of persons
white and colored, when p .sstng, would
stop and look at them with amaz m< nt.
anti no doubt would ask themselves the
question—“where on earth are the
police?" On marly every back str et
ami in every alley a group of “pe ny
dice gamblers” were seen. Drunken
disapited and half-clothed women with
iht ir f oreheads bandaged with a dirty
handkercheif or ng, and an old black
chalk pipe in their mouths, pulling at,
and embracing drunken men in little
“nooks” and alleys, was a picture that
can better be imagined than describ
ed.
We invite the especial attention of
the p<dice and city authorities to this
fi hy and low den ; ‘ Frog Town” or
Robertsville, and v.e are certain, if two
or more policemen could be about there
on a-Sund iy afternoon they would sure
ly have their hinds full, and a good
haul of Sabbath law-brakers lodged in
the jug.”

Second; We have our own material.

we are prepared to turn out work, cheap

OUR NEW YORK LETTER.
New York Jan. 26th 1884.
Editor Echo :—This is the last day
of am ther week, and a day of welcome
to the vast working population oi
New York city. Ihis is the day that
the laborer who is worthy his meat,
expect to get the same. The past
week has been visited with very change
able weather in this city, and some
time one not know what next to
expect. Nevertheless, travel to busi
ness and pleasure was not impeded,
everybody who could go and come, was
on the go to attend to one, or the other
of these things. Commercial business
has been very quiet since the Holidays
began, and seem liable to remain so
until Spring. The Hotel and Boarding
House business seem to be looming up,
as nearly all of the leading Houses,
both white and colored, are full. Now,
as the Winter is almost over and every
body is well supplied with inter
clothing, the dry goods and clothing
stores are offering both ladies and gents
clothing at a sacrifice. Accordingly,
those that can afford it, are buying up
goods to lay aside for next Winter.

were swollen, much inflamed, and very sore.
Eurn Physicians told us that a pow-

AykrP Sarsaparilla. A few
