AN INTERVIEW.
('apt. .J. A. Sykes, one of the rising
H'ung men of Georgia and one of the
□lost popular and favored son of Chat
ham, being in the city last week, our re
[>ort<r met him when the following in
erview was had.
( apt. Sykes, what do you think of
the marriage of Ered Douglass?”
T think it an unfortunate thing lor
him. While every man has the right
to many whomsoever he pleases, that
Joes not necessarily make the union a
popu'ar or respectable one. Then again :
he acts and*doings of men are measur
'd by their prominence and cercumstan*
fes. It Mr. Douglass was a man of
little m te, his marrying a white woman
would not have been noticed. But he,
who for years have posed as the leader
•fa nationality, and the tittle of wh : ch
□as never bdbn questioned or disputed
akes unto himself a wife of another race,
when they are so many of his own rae
hat is far the superior of the one he
•loeed. is an unfortunate thing for him
is a leader.”
Do you think it will tost him the
Aide ship of the race ?
I certainly do. He has lost all
claim upon that pi sit ion. Let him be a
letder in his new departure. He who
hinks hints?!t above a race of people
can not expect to lead that people. Il
it was neei ssary to hold a ‘‘National
< 'invention of (h lured mtn,” it was ab
so'utely necessary to have National Col
ored men and leaders. But in wh.u
degree of respect could colored mon
hold a man as their leader, who saw til
tv scotn their race, and trust himself
upon the lower elements of white society.
I-or certainly no white woman of tin
higher order of American society would
many a <■ doted man, no matt* r to what
■ xteut I is reputa'im and wea’th ex
tended. He has sdd by his marriage,
that am uiz ail the daughters of Africa
mine of ihem are good enough for mi
wife. And who are these colored ladie
but the children ol the race from which
he sprang, and of which he was a leader.
11 they are slighted, must not the race
be Hit who is not for us, is again-t
us. Could we, without loosing our seif
respect, recognize a man us our leader,
when he thinks himself above us, and
does not even think enough of the race
t > marry one of >ts numbr? Suppose,
for instance, that Mr. Parnell, should
need a wife and goes and marries a col
ored woman, what do you think the
Country would think of him? Th
Irish would denounce him and burn
him in effigy, notwithstanding he is
their great leader I refer to the Irish,
because they are engaged in th* a *ixio
grand heroic struggle of freedom as we
a’--’ If rl law of n'ature and of decen
cy, enjoins upon the white man the
duty to pnserve the purity of his race,
f hold, that it enjoins the same duty
upon the colored man, for nature unlike
men, makes no di-tinctioo in the en
forcement of its laws. A white man
never marri's a colored lady, no matter
how highly r<S[ ectable. unless he is
without the pale of society and respect
of his rar-—and then it is seldom beard,
exetpt the woman possesses m ire than
common wealth and he has a desire to
g t hold of it, \\ ell, Mr. Douglass is in
iiis dotage, and his latest sun is sinking
fast, soon it will set to rise no more.
Then. perhaps Mr-. Douglass will be, the
wife ot some white man and they will
ive in style off the fortune of Old .Mau
Dougla-s. This marriage of his will
effect the sale of the ‘'Life and times of
Ered Douglass ” Yessir, it has coveted
hl* declining years with a shadow. It
may b ■ that she thinks it is better to be
the darling of a rich colored man than
the slave <4 a poor white One.”

All Quiet in Frog Town
It wiil be remembered that the Echo
tailed attention to that cut-throat por
tion of the city, known as Frog-Town,
li st week. Ihe result if which was re
markable and woithy of note, from the
fact that four policemen were seen
irusii.g ar. uml the <1 ns almost the
entire d y. which n turally caused the
light-fir ger.-d and vulgar mouth villains
to lav low ami ke< p quiet. About five
<» clock on Sund »y afteimon last, a re
porter ot the Echo in company with
s veral citizens, ventured through the
‘Five Points" of Savannah, in order to
m te if there really hud been any change,
which was as stated above, all quiet and I
plenty ofpolicetrteu around. The pen
ny dice gamblers were not seen; the
usual number of cut-throats had disap
peared and the women were trying to
act deacent. It is hoped that a suffici
ent number of policemen will be kept
ip blog-Town, during the Sabbath, es
pecially, in order to enforce deacency
among a class of villains who reside on
the back street, and have no ragard for
the Sabbath.

** I wish to express my appreciation of ths
valuable qualities of
Ayer's Cherry Pectoral
as a cough remedy.
’• While with Churchill’s army, just before
the battle of Vicksburg, I contracted a se
vere cold, which terminated in a dangerous
■ough. I found no relief till on our march
we came to a country store, where, on aching
for come remedy, I was urged to try A vxn's
Ckxut Pxctoral.
" I did so, and was rapidly cured. Since
then I have kept Pbctobax constantly by
me, for family use, and I hare found it to be
an invaluable remedy for throat and lung
diseases. J. W. Whitliy."
Thousands of testimonials certify ths
prompt cure of all bronchial and lung
affections, by the use of Avan’s Chkut
PnCTonau Being very palatable, the yo ung>
mt children take it readily.
