Attend bland winds, and zephyr’ous breeze, Of summer’s life, and bring “ Heartsease.” Connubial bliss, three welcome guest, Thy sweet influence * can attest; AVlicn thou art fled, nought can appease The ills of life, but the Heartsease.** The tree of life in paradise, Stood as a pledge of greater bliss: Oil, may this flower our dwellings seize, And stand a pledge of sure “ Heartsease.” repugnant to humanity, as it is inconsistent with the biblc, and destructive to liberty. The. following extract of a letter from Pat rick Henry, late governor of Virginia, fur nishes one among many proofs, that a person may be fully convinced of the iniquity and dangerous tendency of slavery, and yet con tinue to hold slaves. lie appears to have been much too wise and candid to attempt to defend a practice which his conscience whis pered him was wrong: “ Dear Sir—I take this opportunity to ac knowledge the receipt of Sir Anthony Bcne- zet's bunk against the Slave Trade : I thank you for it. It is not a litlle surprising, that the professors of Christianity, whose chief excellence consists in softening the human heart, in cherishing and improving its finer feelings, should encourage a practice so to tally repugnant to the. first impressions of of right and wrong. What adds to the won der, is, that the abominable practice has been introduced in the most enlightened ages.— Times that seem to have pretensions to boast of high improvements in lhe arts, sciences and refined morality, have brought into ge neral use, and guarded by many laws, a spe cies of violence and tyran -y, which our rude and karbaPous, but more honest ancestors, detested.
