The frigate Macedonian} which sailed from

year’s cruise, was suddenly overtaken} on the
27th, by a tremenduous hurricane, which lasted
about 15 hours, and left her a wreck, \Vith loss
of mizen mast, and all the spars, except the tore
and main mast, and tlmse badly sprung. The
stern and quarter boats lost, with considerable
other damage. The tempest is represented as
indiscribably awful, beyond any thing iu the
memory of the oldest seaman.

the question of adopting the Constitution recent

It is stated that the United States Branch
Bank at Cincinnatti, Ohio, has called on the
Juvenile depravity.—“ P>y reference to the cri
minal calendar it will appear, that in the year
1813, one hundred and twenty-three boys of 17
years of age, and under, were confined in New
gate only ; but in 1816, two hundred and forty-
seven such children were found within the walls
of tliaf prison, being just double the number dur
ing a period of three years. In 1817, the list ol
boys thus imprisoned, amounted to three hundred
and fifty-nine. And when we add to these the
numbers confined in other prisons ; those sum
marily convicted for petty offences, by the Magis
trates ; those tried at the Clerkemvell, VY est-
ininsterand Southwark Sessions ; those who es
cape detection; and those who through the leni
ty of their prosecutorsare not brought to trial:
the evil is enormous.”
Between 5 aud 600 criminal s were supposed
to be in confinement for trial, at the sessions at
the Old Bailey, which was approaching.
American Spider.—“ There exists in America
an enormous spider, Which zoologist* now class
in the subdivision of the mugales, and which is
called avicularis, because its size (the body a-
lone being an inch an a half long,) enables it to
attack even small birds. M. Moreati de Loines
has furnished a memoir on its manners, as observ
ed by him at Martinique.—It spins no web but
lodges in the crevices of the rocks, and throws
irself with main force upon its prey ; it kills
humming birds, fly birds, and small lizaids,
taking special care to seize them by the nap of
the neck, as though it knew they may be killed
with the greatest ease. Its strong jaws seem to
infuse, a poison into the wounds which they
inllict. for such wounds are considered much

Good news—JVo news.—There were arrivals
yesterday at this port from Great Britain, France
anti Ireland } but there is little ol what is called
news—no wars, or even rUmors of wars—no
moving incidents ot human calamity—no pleas
ing and gratifying details of wide spread devas
tation and distress. Crops are goud—the vintage
is abundant—manufactures flourishing, aud the
soldier rests from the bloody strife. It i3 true
that the people generally are not governed after
the manner of their choice, and the old corrupt
systems continue to oppress. Something, how
ever, has been done in the way of melioration.

The trial and execution of Arbuthnot and Am-
bristie, in Florida, continue to engross public at
tention in Europe aud America. VVe learn, that
the whole proceedings on the trial have been
transmitted to the secretary of war, and copies
of them sent to other members of the cabinet,
and that there does not appear a doubt in the
minds of those who have read them, of the cor
rectness of the sentence of the coUrt martial.
It is not probable that they will be promulgated
until the meeting of congress, on the 16th inst.
It is said that Ambristie acknowledged to the court
that lie had been in arms with the Indians ; but
justified his conduct on the ground of having hiar-
ried an Indian woman, and having children bv
her, whom it was his duty to defend $ that he ac
knowledged the fairness of his (rial, and thanked
