£ f*tal duel took place near Agus- Ga. on the 15th mst. between Col. Hiitry GK Nixon and Maj. Thomas Uopkios, both from South-Carolina, and at the. first fire Col. Nixon re ceived the ball of hi* antagonist in the right b,rcast, which caused his death immediately. The deceased was a member of the gopth-Carohna Legis- lature. , ... . „ ^ The following is given in the Cam den paper as an extract of a letter from Gov. Wilson,- of S. C. to the fa ther of tbe deceased. It must be poor consolation for a parent to learn that his son, eveii in the agonies of death, -w as still actuated by the spirit of re venge, *nd thirsting for the blood of his fellow mortal. “There was an incident in the oc currence of the contest I cannot, fail to record. After your sen received the most deadly and severe wound, he Jared his pistol, & keeping erect, grasp-, cd his other pistol and died in the at titude of inatly resistance and deter mined purpofc* of character. In life and death, he was noble, brave and magnanimous.” Morgan ohct more.— We saw last evening a letter written to his father by a young man, employed on board the brig Patotine', belonging to this port, dated Snyrna, Nov 1,1828, from which vsp hare been permitted to co py the following extract; “1 suppose you recollect Morgan, who made such a disturbance iu America a few years since. He. is now at this place. He has turned lurk for life a fid wears the ' turban. He spoke to me yesterday when I went ashore on the whole af fair of his leaving hi* native land, <H»ich I shall relate to you on my ar rival.” This intelligence is strongly corporative of other reports of the 8 > me kind, which at various times, have cone from Smyrna. 1 — Bos. Cour. als were at so low an ebb in the United States, that the two basest men in the republic wera candidates lor tbe pre sidency. He proDably thought that sbme credit might be given to our po ll* teal newspapers. Exchange papers.—An English phi losopher gravely maintains, tiiat, “matter has no inside.” Bore, hew, and whittle as you uiny, you hud noth ing but surface. According to ibis philosophy, some of the papers seal us in exchange for the Chronicle can not be matter, as they have no outside. One a few weeks since, gave the in side for.m twice over, and one receiv ed this week, instead of the “knowl edge fair,” which other eyes have doubtless found on its outside, presents us “with universal blauk.” Are vve to take this as a hint, that the outside of these papers was not worth read ing?— Vl. ' The Richmond Whig mentions, that a byi now bofnre the Virginia Legislature, proposes to punisb the burning of stacks of grain, by slaves, with death. The Editor remarks, u VVc take leave to express our opin ion, that even as now modified, it is a sanguinary law; but we have no ob jection, provided a white man shall be pat to death for the same offence.” An edict of the Government of Co runna, ordering cart wheels to be greased, was revoked on the petition of the carters, who declared that the oxen would not draw without the mu sic. , A correspondent of tie Castine A- merican states,, .that vlmn lie was travelling in Worcestereounty, Mass, •evcral years since, he‘attempted to help himself to a;flecond slice of fried ham, and found ,hje bad got a child's shoe, scarcely fried*finugh. : In the House ofCommons of North Carolina, the bill for putting down the banks has been rejected by the cast ing vote of the Speaker. The African Prince Abduhl Raha- man,‘has obtained coitributions from different places sufficient to ransom his family, and was soon expected at ■Norfolk, to embark. i On the evening of the 8lh inst. -30118 idle beys ■ burned the President -elect fn effigy at • Hartford Conn.— As an expression of public sentiment on this subject, the court of common council have offered a reward of one hundred dollars for the detection and Conviction of the offenders. Judicious.—bill to prevent Cows Tunning at large in the highways has been discussed in the Legislature of R. Island. After some desultory de bate it was committed to Messrs. Bull and Steers, Deaf and Dumb.—There aog (W institutions for the instruction Of the deaf and dumb in the United States, at which only about 300 pupils re ceive instruction, while it is computed that there are above 5000 mutes in the United States. There are 700 mates in the Slate of Nenv-York, of which 53 only receive instruction here; and of these, there is provis ion by law, for the support and tui- -tion of only 32 in the New-York in stitution! T HE SUBSCRIBER commenced the duties of his station, as editor of this paper, with a trembling hand anu a leluct- ant heart. He had no experience to aid h.m, aod but limited information to rt-com- inenu l.im to the public. He has however progressed so iar, generally, lothesausiac- .yon ol his readers, ioi whicn lie is thansiu;. As the fust volume oi the Phouux is on ihe eve of closing, the euitor has thought best to apprize the-pubhe that a new volume will be commenced next month, and that the great object oi its founuers, tne beneht oi the Cherokecs, will stiii he ass.n- uousiy pursued- It is unnecessary to re peat and particularize the principles unde, which the luture numbers ol the Phmmx w ill he conducteu—the principles will be similar to those which have governed the past numbers. The paper is sacreu to the cause of Indians, ana the editor will feel himself especially bound ^s far as h,s tunc, talents and information will peimit, to ren der it as instructive and entertaining as possible to his brcthicn, and enncavoi to enlist the friendly feelings and sympathies oi his subscribers abroad, in favor of the aborigines. As the present policy of the General Government, the removal of all the Indians bey ond the limits of organized Stales or Territories,is assuming,an important as pect, the editor will feel himself bound to lay before his readers all that may be said on this subject, particularly the objections against this measure of tbe Government. Particular attention will We given to ju dicious miscellany. Choice pieces on re ligion and morals, domestic economy &cc. will lind a ready admittance in the Ph- nix. The Original pail of the paper will be rendered as interesting as the means of the editor will allow. Owing to the want of an assistant,- it is impossible to devote a large portion of the paper to the Cherokee lan guage, as the whole must be original—The editor will however do what he can. The friends of Indians are particularly called upon to assist in this undertaking by their subscriptions. Thus far, the Phccnix has been a dead expense to the proprie tors. It is highly desirable that there should be sufficient patronage to secure it from the like pecuniary embarrassment in future. ELIAS BOUDINOTT.
