Before the next number of our paper
A shall be issued, the first day of June, (he
at day set apart by Georgia, for the'extension
ft of her assumed jurisdiction over the Cher-
f okecs, ami the execution of her laws touch-
ling the Indians, will have arrived. The
f, day is now at hand—(he Cherokees have
| looked to it deliberately—they have anti-
I cipatcd its approach, but they are still
here, on the land of their fathers. So con
scious are they of their rights as a people
, that they have thought it not best to avoid
■the lhr' , al n ne(l operation of civilized and
^republican not to say religious laws, by a
precipitate flight to the western wilds.
They are still here, but not to agree or
’ consent to come under these laws. I his
they never will do—they have protested a-
ttkainst the measure, and will always pro
test against it.
When the time come? that state, laws
re to be executed with rigor, as they no
[doubt will be, hacked by the executive of
the United Slates, and the late decision of
lie Senate, upon the reprobate Cherokees,
\\c are unable to say what the effects will
tie. To us, the future is hut darkness.
One thing we know, there will be suffer
ing. The Cherokees will he a prey to
the cupidity of white men—every indigni-
'ty and every oppression will be heaped up
on them. They have already undergone
pouch, when the time is merely in antici
pation,—how will it be when full licence
'is given to their oppressors?
We have heretofore related instances
where this indignity and oppression have
Ven perpetrated on individuals of this
liation. Besides those we have mentioned
the following may peihaps convey a prop
er light to the public on the conduct of
civilized men towards savages: In the
neighhoihood of Terrapin Creek, there
lives a Creek man by the name c( Hog t
ho, by his industrious habits, has been en
abled to accumulate some property, con
sisting, chiefly, of Urge stocks of horses
tmd cattle. Living a§ he docs near his
while brothers, who are clamorous for the
removal of the Indians, that they may not
be 11 .massed by savage neighbors, h.s best
horses became the objects of much do: ire to
•Some of them. By the precaution of the
Hog and the constant watch lie kept about
histables: and lots, lie was able to pre
serve these horses. Finding they could
not steal them, wc understand another ex
pedient was rescilcd to lately by these
iticmbers of tbs “l'oncy oiuu.-' *•»«*

o sell for such a trifle. The while man

iffi'hc oiler was again rejected, the Indians’ j
lorse being greatly superior in value to
he other. At this the wh.tc man observed
re would h ive the horse, and proceeded
awards the! ol with a bridle. Hog’s wife,
iliscoverihg the intention ofthesc men.tcl-
Jowcd, anil in attemptin'g to prevent them
from catching the horse, was knocked
'down by the other armed man with a gun.
tSh" fell senseless to tlie ground. Ilog ran
into the horse lot, &• by driving ofl the hor -
ps.Ec givingUicalarm, prevented these rob-
fhors from accomplishing their de
sign. The woman lay for some time ap
parently dead-, but finally came to herself.
AVc understand she is better, and is likely
to recover.
Comment is unnecessary. Wc intreat
you,respected reader,—we implore you, to
pause alter perusing the above facts, and
reflect upon the cfl'ccts of civilised legisla
tion over poor savages' The laws which
ore the result of this legislation, arc framed
•expressly against us, and nut a clause in
our favor. Wc cannot ho a party or a wit
ness in any of t(u$ courts wlic.c a white
•uvaii is a party. Hire is the secret. Full li
cence to our oppressors, and every avenue
cf justice closed against us. Yes, this is
the bitter cup prepared for us by a repub
lican and religious Government— we shall
drink it to the, very dregs.
