Muscular strength of Insects.—It has
liei-j remarked with reference to
comparative size and strength, that a
cock chaffer is six times as strong as
a horse; and Linnaeus observes, if an
elephant wore as strong in proportion
as a stag-beetle, it would he able to
tea up rocks, and level mountains.—
We uny understand the most proxim
ate cause of the enormous strength of
insects when we look at the prodigious
number of their muscles—the fishy
bells or ribbands by ivboso means all
animal motions are performed The
number of these instruments of motion
in the human body is reckoned about
530; but in the caterpillar of the goat
moth. Lvonel counted seven times
that number: in the bead, 228; in the
body, 1637; and around the intestines
3186: which after deducting 20 eoin-
