We feel much concerned in an
nouneing that that dreadful disease
the {’holer v, exists at Quebec, and
no d ubt here also Ii is officially
announced at Quebec, Whence it first
appeared on the 9th instant in 13
eases and 7 deaths. Two or three
individuals died here last evening and
this morning; under suspicions tiir-
cnmstnnces. which leave little or no
doubt on our minds that the Cholera
wad tin*, disease; a :d however inju
rious it may prove to business gener
ally, and to ours in particular, to
spread this alarming report, yet we
think it onr duty to state facts can
didly, without regard to conse

insisted that there are some circunt
stances in which it is necessary to
hazard some of the limbs to save the
body. The Viceroy of Spain, to
whom they looked for relief, had de
clared, that if that fort were lost he
would not attempt to save the island.
The whole safely of Malta, therefore,
depended till the length of the sit'g 1 ',
and it was absolutely necessaiy to
protract it as long ns possible. I'00
Couaeil came ove. to liis opinion, am!
with their com 11 recce e impressed
on (Im garrisit'a that the preservation
or loss of the island, and perhaps, of
the order itself, depended on the
time that thvy should hold out the
place, nnd hade them call to mind
the vows they had made at their pro
fession, and that they were obliged to
sacrifice the r lives for the defence of
the order. F’n dlv, lie would not fail
to send such reinforcements as the
smallness of tin* fewt wool ! admit ol.
and if necessary, would throw lum-
se| into the place, ami there die with
them.
After a senes of hldodv assaults,
from the 2-11 h of May to tin? 21st of
June, the garrison was reduced to
extremity. They sent a swimmer a-
oross Hie port (0 the Grand Master
to request sticco*, and five large bo its
were soon fitted out and tilled with
kniglrfs But the shore was lined
with Turkish artillery, and they were
unable to effect a landing. The be-
gropout, together with most of the
knights ami soldiers that were left,
being ovcnvheldied wrilhp numbers,
u.'ed upon the breach, and this terii-
ble assault was discontinued only for
lack ol combatants, not endin' hut
with the death of the last knight.
