BDU €)mps<,
the"cokned beef boarder.
A GOOD STORY.
\ few years since the capital of one of the
New England States boasted of but one public
house— which was a very creditable estab
lishment, by the way —and at which, at the
present time, you can procure very comfortable
and satisfactory accommodations on reasonable
terms. Then, as now, this house was the
temporal home of Solons and Lycurguses oi
the State when their legislative duties drew
them to the capital.
Mr. F , the proprietor of the house at the
time to which I allude, found that he had ail
sorts of men to deal with, the State represen
tatives being composed of farmers, ship
builders, land speculators, lumber merchants,
&c.
Os all men however, the queerest customer
was a representative who had not certainly
been chosen for any remarkable oratorical
talents, or for any extensive knoledge of polit.
ical economy. In fact his notions of private
economy altogether predominated, as the fol
lowing anecdote will show.
With these constituents, Mr.G , took up
his quarters at the public house kept by Mr.
E . He was delighted with the breakfast
of venison steak, the dinner of turkeys and
moose meat, and other corresponding accom
modations; but really the rale of board was
more than he felt able to pay. Accordingly
he applied to the landlord to know if he
could not board him for less than the usual
price.
‘‘l should be happy to accommodate you,”
said Mr. F , politely,‘‘but I should lose
by the operation. I have the best of every
thing on my table, and my expenses are so
large that I could not live it I were to reduce
my price. )
“No way at all—in my case ?” inquired the
representative, ruefully.
“No—l don’t see how I can. I have to pay
uncommon high this season, for my turkeys,
venison, eggs, &c:”
“Now, see hear,’’ interrupted Mr. G .
“suppose those fixens’ are worth all you charge
for board. I wouldn’t complain it l felt as
though I could eat such dinners. Now why not
let them that want to eat turkeys pay for ’em?
For my part. I’d as lief eat corned beef every
day as not. I won’t eat your turkeys, and I
dontsee why I should pay for ’em.”
“Very well,” said the obliging landlord,
with an indulgent smile, “if you are willing
to confine yourself to corned beef, as far as
meats are concerned, and to eat other tilings
accordingly, 1 suppose lean make a deduction
in your case.”
The representative was higlv gratified. Me
promised to eat corned beef, and to abstain
from various costly dishes which were named,
upon which condition a satisfactory bargain
was made.
Accordingly every body who observed Mr.
G at table from that, day, were much aston
ished at his singular choice of food.
Os coarse the bargain was a secret—con
fined to the two parties by whom it was made :
and the uconscious waiters laid before the rep
resentative temptation after temptation,, which
he no doubt found hard to resist.
“What shall I help you to, sir?” they would
ask him. “Turkey, chicken pie, venison steak,
roasted ”
“ Corned beef!’’ would be the self-denying
exclamation of the scrupulous boarder.
Day after day it was the same. Sometimes
the waiters, through mistake, we may suppose,
placed beside him a choice plate of the forbid
den luxuries, which it made his heart ache to
send away again, with his modest call for
“corned beef.”
At length the waiters grew stupid or wag
gish, we suspect that Mr. G would have
to send away half a dozen appetizing dishes be
fore they could be made to understand that hi.s
imalterable choice was “corned beef.”
This state of affairs afforded a great deal ol
amusement to the waiters, boarders, guests —
everybody except Mr. G himself, who was
greviwasly annoyed. At last human nature
could bear it no longer. Oue day Mr. G
called for his favorite dish three limes, received
succcsfully roasted veal, moose steak and
broiled chicken ! Glowing and swearing
with perplexity and wrathful impatience, he
sent away the last named dish, with an etipha
tic request for “coined beef!” The waiter—
stupid fool!—returned with a smoking,
odorous turkey! “You thicked skulled rascal!”
cried the furious representative, “can’t you un
derstand ? I ain’t a turkey boarder. I’m a
corned beef boarder !”
The waiter heard—the table roared —the
representative perspired profusely ; but he nev
er was never afterwards troubled with refusing
the dishes he had forsworn. The waiters enjoy
ed the joke, and the representative the corned
beef in quiet.
A coach containing a young woman with one
trunk on behind—behind the coach we mean
is pleasingly suggestive of matrimony. But
half a dozen young ones and seven band boxes,
is much more suggestive—there’s no mistake
in that sign.
Receipts.
Minced Veal. —Cut the remains of cold
veal, left from a previousdinner, into very small
dice, with a portion of the fat, and a slice of
lean dressed ham. Put into a stewpan about
au ounce of butler, with a finely chopped on
ion; place over the fire, and keep stirring until
the onion is done; then stir in a tablespoonful
of flour; mix well, and add gradualy a pint of
milk, or milk and broth. Season with white
pepper, salt, and a little nutmeg. Let the
whole boil ten minutes, and add the minced
veal and ham with the juice of half a lemon;
warm, and serve with slices of toasted bread
in the dish. Poached eggs may also be served
with it.
Everton Toffy.—Take a quarter of a
pound of fresh butter; put it into a pipkin,
and melt it over a gentle fire; then add a
pound of brown sugar, stir them well together,
and keep them over the fire for ten or twelve
minutes, or un*il some of the mixture, dropped
into cold water, sets hard. It may then be
poured out into tin moulds, or on a sheet of
writing-paper with the edges folded up, pre
viously rubbed with butter.
Pineapple Jelly.—Pare and grate the
pineapple, and put it into the preserving pan
with a pound of fine white sugar to every pound
of fruit, stir it, and boil it until it is well mixed,
and thickens sufficiently; then strain it, pour it
into the jars, and when it has become cool,
cover the jellies with papers wet in brandy; cov
er the jars tightly, and treat them as applejel-
J T-
Plain Omelet.—Break three eggs into a
bowl, and beat them until they are of one color,
add pepper and salt, and spread the egg very
thin in a hot, buttered pan over the fire: as soon
as the egg begins to set, roll it up carefully, In
putting a broad-bladed knife under one edge,
and turning over and over until it is all folded;
serve it hot.

Convulsive Fits Cured!
GEORGIA: ? 1 hereby certifythat in the spring of 1845
Jasper County. ) iny negro girl Charity was attacked with
convulsive fits, which continued to increase on her, notwith
standing all the efforts of some of our best Mineral Doctors
in this region. Deeming the case hopeless with them, 1 con
cluded to carry her to Macon and put her under the. treatment
of Dr. M. S. Thomson, who gave her medicine some two or
three months, which stopped them for about 18 months, at
which time they returned w ith increased violence, so severe,
indeed, that 1 and an eminent physician in the neighborhood de
spaired of her life. Under these circumstances the Doctor a
gain advised me to call on Dr. Thomson, w hich l did and ob
tained a portion of medicine, which, I am pleased to be able to
say entirely cured her. The last she had continued from some
7to 9 hours or more and was very severe, but they have not
recurred since, a period of over three years.
Given under my hand and seal, this 21st November 1830.

Fits cured without seeing the Patient!!
Jones Cos. Ga. 7th Feb. 1851.
This may certify that my negro woman Martha,, (now be
longing to Ferdinand Finney,) was severely attacked with Ep
ilepsy, or convulsive fits in 1847, which continued to return
every week or two, and sometimes continued on her for a
week at a time, during which she would have as many asfor
ty or fifty on a stretch, before stopping. Inthis state she con
liuued for a whole year, notwithstanding all Dr. Ridley of
IlillHboro, could do. Despairing al last of his success, and
hearing of the unpraielled cures effected by Dr. M. 8. Thom
son of Macon, I concluded to call on him, which I did, and
gave him her symptoms when he prepared and gave me med
icine, which in about two months entirely cured her, as she
has had none since and is now perfccly healthy, thus adding
another to the many cures the Doctor has effected without
seeing the patient.

Syphilis, Rheumatism & Liver Complaint
Cured without seeing the Patient!
Jones Cos. Ga. 21st. Sept. 1850.
Dr. .If. .s'. Thomson —Dear Sir: Your success lias been
such in curing my son of Rheumatism and my negro woman
of liver disease, Rheumatism, Syphilis &e. that I cannot re
frain from giving you the credit that is due you, for your
skill, and if you think that a statement of the cases will be
any use in directing other sufferers, to the proper remedies,
the following rel tion of facts is at your disposal.
Some 14 years ago, my negro woman Rhody was taken in
a lingering way, supposed to be caused from Syphilis, treated
by herself, which on discovering, I put her under the care
of several mineral physicians, Drs. Little and White of Mil
ledgeville, especially, who after mercurializing her a year or
so. left her worse than they found her, laboring in addition
under Mercurial Rheumatism.
I then applied to Dr. Woodruff", who treated, and I thought
cured her, but after a while, she became worse again, so
much so that I despaired of relieving her. Under these cir
cumstances 1 applied to you, and 1 am pleased to lie able to
report, that notwithstanding it is a longtime ago, she has had
no return of her disease since, but is now doing me very good
service.
The case of my son was one of Mercurial Rhematism ari
sing from salivation for a fever. After keeping lingering for
three or four years, and getting worse all the time, till his
limbs were drawn andstitfened very much; notwithstanding
all that we could do, he continued thus, till we applied to you
when you soon relieved him.andl am happy to be able to re
port that consider him relieved cured, and has been so twelve
months.
In conclusion, dear sir, go on and prosper, you may have ene.
mies, as who that is any account has not, but success in curing
such desperate cases must bear you up, and that your success
may be commensurate with your merits is tlie earnest wish of
yours truly, GILLIS WRIGHT.

The following is from the pen of Wm. II Levi

clusive?
‘lt is seldom we permit ourselves to occupv a
space in these columns to speak in praise of aev
article in the patent medicine way; that when we
seethe life of lellow-creature saved by the use o
any medicine whatever, we consider it as our
right, if not our duty, to give a simple statement of
facts, that others may, in like manner, be benefit
led. The case which lias induced us to pen this
aiticle was that of a young iady of our acquain
tance, who by frequent exposure to the night air.
contracted a Cold which settled on the Lungs be
fore its ravages could be stayed. (This occured
two years ago this winter.)” Various remedies
were used, but with very little effect or benefit.—
The Cough grew worse, with copious expectora
tion, and the sunken eye, and pale, hollow cheek,
told plainly that pulmonary disease was doing its
vvorst on her delicate frame. The family physi
cian was consulted, and although he would not ad
mit to tli2 young lady that she really had the Con
sumption, yet lie would give no encouragement as
to a cure. At this crisis her mother was persuad
ed to make use of a bottle of Dr. Rogers’ Com
pound Syrup of Liverwort and Tar,'and we are
happy to state she was perfectly cured in loss than
three months by this medicine alone, after even
hope was destroyed. It is useless to comment on
such a case as this, for the simple truth will reach
where polished fiction never can. If any doubt
