j gia Compromise measures, complained of grievances
I that needed to be redressed, and yet denounced the
j Union party for not being of the Georgia platform.
He was evidently befogged and bewildered, (as his own
! party none of them deny) and before his time was half
advanced he had drained his subject dry, and then!
of all the coughing, throat-clearing, hawking, spitting,
mouth-wiping and paper opening and folding that ever
was seen! The General’s auditory were evidently
impatient but none half so much so as himself. Oh
now should it ever be his fortune to make a great man,
(and he will evidently make one if he can only get oth
er people to put the same estimate upon his talents he
docs himself,) won’t ho have many a hearty laugh at
the weary length of those two hours? After M. had
worn out his time, his subject and his auditory, he sat
down and Johnston again rose to conclude. 1 thought
that M. had lost his sense of shame and was not suffi
ciently sensitive to appreciate a basting. But never
before did a living man evince more excruciating ago
ny under any thing that was not a ‘torture to his flesh.’
As the fallacy of his positions was exposed he would
wring and screw, and frequently disclaim his own pro
fessions when stripped of their monstrous deformities.
There are three things that will not be done again, cer
tain. Ist, the Southern Rights party will not ask Mor
gan to answer any body. 2nd, Morgan will never
consent to speak two hours. 3rd, he will never again
reply to Jim Johnson. When the Gentleman's time
was announced as being expired and he professed re
grets at its shortness, 1 could but think of old Spark’s
promises, hut Spark was drunk and the matter passed.
I learn old Me. has sent down for publication in the
Patriot a reply to Bullieane; now I have only this to say
Ido not think he will get access to tho Patriot, for 1
am sure no paper would publish a production from so
base a fellow as McCorkle unless actuated by some
thing like a fellow feeling, and I hope Bullieane whoev
er he is will have more self-respect than to respond to
any thing emanating from such a source.
We are pretty much like the handle of a jug down
here in Southwestern Georgia, all going for Cobb,
Johnston Are. Some political jugglers have tried to put
out the impression that the Book Cobb is the candidate
for Governor. Our Wire grass boys say they owe a
debt of gratitude to said Book man and will conse
quently support him. What they will resort to next,
having here failed in all their plans, I am unablo to
sav. Respectfully, BAKER.
A Voice from Columbus.
Who will swear next ?
Very casv thing gentlemen ; stop up. Don’t you recol
lect something—any little thing. Scratch your head
and ponder. You have heard Jim Johnson talk, you
have heard him talk about Yankees, and how smart
they are, and how rich they are, what good people they
are, and the time he slept with old Tom Benton, and how
he hates niggers, and all these things, lake the book,
don’t study about it —the election is nearly here—nev
er mind about your conscience. Co- Seaborn Jones
voted for the Wilmot Proviso, \'e sfj’s it is unconstitu
tional, and he sicore to support the Constitution.
Judge Iverson, he was in for it—-he told Mr. Polk to
perjure himself by signing it; /* knew it was uncon
stitutional; your conscience von’t hurt you—Con
science! ! it’s nothing but r word to scare children
and green horns ! don’t you know if there was any
such thing that ‘Uncle SeaborP and honorable Alfred
would know it. Come now, nen, don’t stand back ;
drug up some expression that *y a syllogistic*l tergiv
ersation you can wring into an Abolition sentiment, as
coming from Johnsou, We/ pledged our word to
Rhett and Seward, that we would send a disunionist
from this district, and if yo* don’t swear, and that ve
ry hard, the thijg is gone. It is the most difficut mat
ter in the wofifi to make these ‘old farmers’ believe
(he allegatiort that our alligator Wm. Chamberlain
put forth. Wiy they won't believe, with three back
ers to him a* good and true as ever tooted a brass
mouthed bug* from the manufactory of Rhett, Quat
tlebum &CY The Bible says three witnesses are ne
cessary toc /denm an Elder, and we accordingly only
engaged hree ; but we forgot, in our linrry, that it
took more estimony to establish a declaration of one of
Satan’s ilowers than the declaration of truth. The
people ty they have objections to our witnesses so far.
That of beloved brother Paul sold all his negroes so
tbat.-t. jty time be might t a .note the ranche and not
...use unyfiog by a scrimmage, and moreover, have an f 1
excuse for not fighting to ptotect a species of property I
he bad no interest in ‘. While Johnson keeps all his ]
slaves to the amount of thirty or forty—determined to
Tie in the last ditch for his right to them*; tnat Paul's
evidence is only his own deductions, and that he was
greatly at war with the rules of logic in making them.
Indeed I must confess my friends that our beloved Paul
did leap from pricipiss to preeipass, too suddenly;
thereby showing that he was more airy than solid in
the upper story.
And of our noble Howard (who offers himself up as
a willing sacrifice at every election) the people area
little shy because he has ranted and fumed so much
they think him non compos , as such they rule his testi
mony out of Court.
And next is our young friend Jame-too-Flea-el
len. He don't take at all. They call him—the long,
lean, lank, lantern jawed, ex limb of the law, ex ne
cessitate. They think he swore a leetle too much )
the quantity of matter deposited too great and looking
rather billious—that the pill that worked this load from
bis bowels was composed of great love for his Cousin
W. Chamberlain and a desire to support his sinking
press —mixed with a little malice towards Johnson,
because he would’nt move to a free State, be n tree
Soiler, and let him have a little law himselfi They
say he is a man of marvellous memory—equal toTris
tam Shandy, who recollected a conversation and other
things that took place between his parents on the
night, nine months previous to his birth.
1 endeavored to get way VV—(Johnson's old law
partner) to swear against him, and if he had consented,
the thing would have needed no more support, but he
says he don’t recollect any thing, and he has a cow
ardly fear of this humbug of’a thing conscience. I re
peat it, gentlemen, we must swear. We must elect Pen
ning—let Pitts and Hatcher, Frank Wilkins and the
Big Mule, go to the D—l. They are merely running
for fun, whenever you can swap one of them for a vote
in favor of Henry—do it. We brought them along just
for swapping stock any way. Who will take the book.
Or if you can’t swear by the book—swear by Quit
man's broken horn. It will do as well, and may be
you can sleep better over that oath.

LETTER FROM COLUMBUS.
Columbus, Sept. 17th, 1851.
Dear Doctor :—Owing to the disagreeable position
of the petitioners for the pardon of the negro Garrett,
they dread to say more in favor of the black race, who
commit tho basest crimes. The result of the pardon
has been that a negro recently with a knife cut the
nephew of Mr. P. Adams, (a very decent steady yonng
Irishman) for putting him (drunk as the negro was)
out of his uncle’s yard, three times, Cun it be suggested
for the benefit of said petitioners, that the Governor
will by virtue of his Excellency, have the Court in this
County to come on in time to try this negro, so that if
he is convicted the friends of the black stock can renew
their petition and attain a pardon from George W.
Towns, before he makes his eternal endodgement.
Yours, &c.
