j)r. Andrews ; —On the authority oft he at
tending physician, I state that there was a
single case of distinct Small Pox arrived ou the
t r *iu from Savannah this morning. It was in
t he person of a child in the family of John Bain,
i ;l te of Scotland, and passengers on the steamer
florid a from New York.
Fortuately, the case was discovered in passing
through the city, and the whole family were
promptly detained, in order to prevent the
Extension of the disease into the country.
The party have all been removed from the
c itv, three miles into the pine woods, anil
] o <Xod and guarded at a place remote from any
settlement.
They spent but a short time in the city, and
ttliile here, were in no house ; and Dr. Benson,
whohas visited them this evening in the country,
assures us that he has no apprehensions, from
the condition of the child, of a further spread
of the disease. In the event of any new civse,
the public shall be promptly notified.
Very respectfully, J. 11. R/WASIIIXGTOX.

Columbus, Oct. Ist, ISSI.
L. F. W. Andrews, Esq.— Sir. —Electioneering
hns just commenced its working here. Unionists and
I)i,unionists are getting ready for the pells. The for
mer. Ike a giant conscious of strength are quietly wait
ing for the victory, the latter like a dwarf depending
on cunning and sycophancy, are ranging about seeking
whom they may devour. The Irish generally here,
lire to the death “ Unionists .” Some few of them
who would be something did they know hut how, are
Pisunionists, for what reason 1 know not, except that
they think it noble to speak traitorously of the rights
and privileges —the honor and freedom of this country
which, when, as strangers she took them in and shel
tered them. Now because they are naturalized, viper
like, they turn round and sting their benefactors. —
Above all men on earth, Irishmen should protect the
liberty of his country —should not bo traitors to her
cause, and should respect and value her rights which
they are sworn to protect. Let them for an instant
recollect that in swearing allegiance to this government
they swore to protect the rights, the Liberties and Con
•tilution of this country, for which thousands of their
countrymen courageously fought and fell. And if the
immortal names of their illustrious countrymen, who
Mired and died here cannot induce them to rigidly adhere
to their adopted country, let the remembrance of the
•tarring thousands that still grow beneath English niis
,r.ule, and who want but the means to come here,
•waken a spark of Irish gratitude and philanthropy
fin their bosoms, and now, at this crisis, let them prove
Show greatly they value; nd how nobly they will sustain
it he great and good Union of this free country. Let
meithcr pride, ambition, nor party spirit have anything
1o do with, saw, when the trial is at band, by which the
Strength of public feeling is to be tested —the “Amor
Patriae 7 ’ Os -every man proved, and the liberty of a great
people to suffer or triumph.
I am an'irishman myself, and sooner than, by any
act. thought or word of mine, that the “Union of this
country should suffer, I would deny the name I bear. I
have seen, known and felt the miseries to which dis
union in any shape, or in any place, can reduce a peo
ple, and if l wanted proof I need but look back to the
annals of my country to find it the curse of my lan l, of
my people and of my -religion. Should l then be
better than a Demon if I was to try to accelerate the
•spirit of Disunion here? Are the minds of Irishmen
to be darkened by the hidden and sinister views of
fiendish partisans, who pretend to have noble ends in
view, without noble means to gain them ? I hope not.
Irishmen, the heroes of the world's battles fields, the
Champions of liberty and religion, are, I hope, too hon
orable, too far seeing not to see the ends such buckram
heroes want to gain. Irishmen are mostly Catholics,
and are therefore bound by the laws of their God,
their Church and their Country to respect their oath,
which irrevocably bound them to the Constitution of tins
their adopted home, their liberty of conscience and hu
man rights. Let me see and know them that they re
spect tlie former and fully appreciate the latter. Let it ne
ver be said, that an Irishman will give a vote to a Disu
tiionist at the coming election*. Let them stand to their
oath, to their country and themselves, and never be the
dupes of those whose smile is malice and whose hearts
are guile. Popularity ought not to influence them.
Malignity should not drive them, nor sycophancy win
them at a time like this, when the adder of Disunion is
hidden under the weeds of dissimilating love of South
ern Rights. Let Americans in name do as they like,
but let Irishmen remain true to themselves, to their
native and adopted country. They have citizenship in
this country, and let them prove to the country that
gave them this privilege, how much they love and value
it for the power which makes them, what nature in
tended them, to be ‘ great, glorious and free.’’ The
jealous eye of monarchy is now watching every mo
ment of this country, and the greatest delight that could
be experienced by tyrants would be the disunion of the
inhabitants. England like “the roaring lion” ever
•eeking to devour, would above all delight in seeing
this country disunited. The promulgator of war. fam
ine and bigotry, would wish to follow in the wake of
her Irish subjects across the billows of the Atlantic,
and trace them up in the backwoods to whisper the
destroying words of disunion, whose blight has withered
their energies at borne, and would render them nugato
ry here. M ill Irishmen then give the helping hand
to the oppressors of their country, their religion and
race, by voting or identifying themselves with the Dis
unionists of this State. Will they shut their eyes
against seeing the ghastly forms of their wretched
countrymen and women whom English-made starvation
left to die by r want in their native land of plenty, or on
•thecold shores of Quebec ? Will the wailings of their
.country people who pine under English domination be
disregarded, when the evil tongue ot a Disunionist will
be heard. Let every lover of order, of freedom, of
■justice, and philanthropy be on the alert to know who
are for America as it ires, is and ever may be. For
my part, here the Argus gaze of liberty shall mark
the supporters of as mad as foolish and disgraceful a
movement as ever made good men to blush. Let
irishmen, wherever they are, now show themselves in
their true colors, and as they determine to perpetuate
.the Union which they are sworn to protect, let them
rush to the polling, crying out “ FAUGII A I>AL
LAH,” vote for Unionists, and thus give the world
the proof of their right to be freemen, and then will all
good men feel proud of them as will their countrymen.
IIIBERNICUS.
Stealing (Commenced.
4Ye are informed that on Thursday evening,
the Fire-Eaters sent out a squad ol unnaturali
zed Irishmen, to be penned up and properly
disciplined by spiritual consolation fu* the elec
tion on Monday. These illegal votes are de
igned to swell the result at the Warrior or
some other precinct in the county. We shall
see, if any candidates will dare play such a foul
game as this.

TP The reader will find an advertisement in anoth

of the most remarkable medicines of the ace for Coughs,
Colds, Influenza, Bronchitis, Asthma, Pains in the
