A family of respectability in their own circle,

A Soldier’s Privileges. —lt is well known
that “Old hickory” was equally popular with
the army and among the people at large. Xo
man ever lived in this country about whom so
many characteristic anecdotes have been rela
ted by those who were among bis personal
friends. Below we give two of these, which
we do not remember to have seen in print be
fore :
Several years ago, ago an officer who was
one of the most distinguished oi his grade in
the service of the U. S., on his way home from
a dinner party on a certain occasion was at
tacked so violently with vertigo, that he became
impressed with the idea that the ground was
rising up against him, and that the tire plugs
were after him in hot haste. Under these cir
cumstances he determined to conceal himself
in a friendly gutter, and wait till his enemies
had dispersed. In this condiiition he was found,
and of course one of the numerous troop of oll
•ce hunters was found ready to communicate to
Gn. Jackson, then president of the i nited
States, the fact that the gallant defender of Port
old man stood fora moment reflecting, then
turning to his informant said—“ Very bad con
duct sir, in the Colonel. But, by the eternal !
he has done lighting enough never to draw an
ther sober breath in his life.” Ever afterwards,
it was a recognized i ight of the veteran Oolone ,
to get drunk as often as he pleased* provided
he kept himself out of sight.
About the same period, the late Major Gihon
was Collector of the port of a southern city, to
which office he had been appointed by the elder
Adams. Os course the Major was a Federalist,
and one of General Jackson’s political oppon
ents. During the hard struggle of the Amer
ican Colonies, for independence, Maj. G-, had
distinguished himself on several occasions, He
had commanded a forlorn hope under Mad An
thony, at Stony Point. After the inauguration
of Jackson as President, the Major who was
as bitter a politician as he had been gallant as
a soldier, in an excited discussion about politics
declared that “Old Hickory” was “a d—d
scoundrel ’ The speech was promptly repoi
ted to the President, by one of his friends, who
supposed a vacancy would fie certain. M oli,
what of it r was Jackson’s replf. “The man
who commanded a forlorn hope of Anthony

pleases.”

“ What,” said the other, “haint you got no
grandmother living at your house ?
“ Xo,” was the reply.
“ Well, 1 have, anil I might break two mugs
they dar’nt whip me. ’

the salisaction to announce to their patrons and

Wiiere these Gins have been once used, it
would be deemed unnecessary lor the .Manufactur

commend them, in preference to other Gins now
in use. For the satisfaction of those who have

GEORGIA SARSAPARILLA.
For Jaundice, Sick Head-ache, Dizziness , JjOss of
Appetite , Constipation of the Bmcels, Piles, cans
ed by Costireness, Pain in the Bones, or Rheutna
l ism, caused by the use of Mercury, Syphilis , Scro
fula, Boils , Ulcer* q-c.
‘TYHS preparation is made as pure as possible. Its bitter taste
JL and beneficial atfects in diseases of the Liver, and diseases
arising from an impure state of the Blond, prove it to he the
purest and most useful preparations of Sarsaparilla that is made.
Those who have used the various preparations of Sarsapa
rillo wiil find, by the taste and effect, that there is more Sarsa
parilla in one bottle of Dr. D's. preparation, than in half a
dozen bottles as it is generally made.
That it might be more particularly adapted to professional
use, nothing but the pure Sarsaparilla has been used, that for
different diseases, physicians might combine or prescribe with
it, such articles as they might con.-ider most appropriate in
cases under their treatment.
Its alterative and mildly purgative effect upon the bowels,
make it not only a good substitute for Mercury, but useful in
removing all diseases arising from the imprudent use of Mer
cury.

r 1 ’HE above preparation is put up in Large Bottles, and
JL offered to the public as the most highly concentrated
Medicine now in use. The success which has attended its ex

of the proprietors, and placed it among the specifics fordis
ease. It is deemed useless to resort to the usual pulling re
sorted to fiy the proprietors of patent medicines generally, in
this case, as we are determined to let the article stand or
fall upon its own merits All that is necessary to insure its
success is a trial of Hie article. The following certificates
speak for themselves:
Alrany, Ga. July 11, 1830.
Mr. Dickinson—Dear sir: I have used your “Sarsapa

CoßiivuSsßVC Fits Cured!
GEORGIA: ) 1 hereby certify that in the spring of 1845
Jasper County. ) ray negro girl Charity was attacked with
convulsive fits, which continuedto increase on her. notwith
standing all the efforts of some of our best Mineral Doctors
in this region. Deeming the case hojielcss with them. 1 con
cluded to carry her to Macon and put her under the treatment
of Dr. M. 8. Thomson, who gave her medicine some two or
three months, which stopped them for about 18 months, at
which time they returned with increased violence, sosevere,
indeed, that I and an eminent physician in the neighborhood de
spaired of her life. Under these circumstances the Doctor a
gain advised me to call on Dr. Thomson, which l did and ob
tained a portion of medicine, which, 1 am pleased to be able to
say entirely cured her. The last she had continued from some
7 to y hours or more and was very severe, but they have not
recurred since, a period of over three years.
Given under my hand and seal, this 21st November 1850.

Fits cured without seeing the Patient!!
Jones Cos. Ga. 7th Feb. 1851.
This may certify that my negro woman Martha, mow !*•-
longing to Ferdinand Finney,) was severely attacked with Ep
ilepsy, or convulsive fits in 1847, which continued to return
every week or two, and sometimes continued on her for a
week time, during which she would have as many asfor
ty or fifty on a stretch, before stopping. Inthis state she con
tinued for a w hole year, notwithstanding all Dr. Ridley of
Hillsboro, could do. Despairing at last of bis success, and
hearing of the unpraielled cures effected by Dr. M. 8. Thom
son of Macon, 1 concluded to call on him, which I did, and
gave him her symptoms when he prepared and gave me med
icine, which in about two months entirely cured her, as she
has had none since and is now porfecly healthy, thus adding
another to the many cures the Doctor has effected Without
seeing the patient.

Syphilis, Rheumatism & Liver Complaint
Cured without seeing the Patient! *
Jones Cos. Ga. 21st. Sept. 1850.
Dr. .M. S. Thomson —Dear Fir: Your success has been
such in curing my son of Rheumatism and my negro woman
of liver disease, Rheumatism, Syphilis See. that 1 cannot re
frain from giving you the credit that is due you, for your
skill, and if you think that a statement of the cases will be
any use in directing ether sufferers, to the proper remedies,
the following rel .tion of facts is at vour disposal.
Bomc 14 years ago, my negro woman ltliody was taken in
a lingering way, supposed to be caused from Syphilis, treated
by herself, which on discovering, 1 put her under the care
of several mineral physicians, Drs. Little and White of Mil
ledgeville, especially, win after mercurializing her a year or
so, left her worse than they found her, laboring in addition
under Mercurial Rheumatism.
1 then applied to Ur. Woodruff", who treated, and I thought
cured her, but after a while, she became worse again, so
much so that l despaired of relieving her. Under these cir
cumstances I applied to you, and 1 am pleased to l>e able to
report, that notwithstanding it is a longtime ago, she has bad
no return of her disease since, hut is now doing me very good
service.
The case of my son was one of Mercurial Uhemntism ari
sing from salivation for a fever. After keeping lingering for
three or four years, and getting worse all the time, till his
limbs were drawn and stiffened very much; notwithstanding
all that we could do, lie continued thus, till we applied to you
when you soon relieved him, and! am happy to be able to re
port that consider him relieved cuicd, and lias been so twelve
months.
In conclusion, dear sir, goon and prosper, you may have ene.
mies, as wiio that is any account has not, but success in curing
such desperate cases must hear you tip, and that your success
may be commensurate with your merits is the earnest wish of
yours truly, GILT.IS WRIGHT.
The undersigned continues his treatment of all manner of
chronic forms of disease, through the mail, the facilities of
which have been much enhanced ince the introduction of
the cheap postage system, which will be greatly increased by
the recent Act of Congress.
The afflicted, no matter pvhere they reside, by sending a
statement of the symptoms of their cases in writing, may
have Medicines to suit them compounded and sent, and might
count upon receiving it with tiie same certainty that they
would a letter. That they can b s cured without a personal
interview and examination, isstrange, but that hundreds are
thus cured, is no more strange than true.
In order that a//, the poor as well as the rich, may enjoy the
benefits resulting from his treatment, the subscriber puts bis
terms at the low rate of five dollarsrr.ontbly, cash or good re
ference, to all those whoare able to pay, and freely and grat

His Infirmary is open fir the reception of Negroes; and for
other cases requiring liis personal attention, City accommoda

lie still continues the treatment of acute cases, in town or
in the immediate surrounding country, hut cannot leave the

TIIE GREATEST DISCOVERY’ OF THE AG
Dr I T. HENDERSON’S EUREKA TONIC
AND NEPENTIIEAN PILLS, a safe, certa.u
and permanent antidote against all forms of the pois.
onous effects of miasmata, effecting speedy and per
manent cures of
CHILLS and FEVER,
and all the different varieties of Fevers; torpid liver
enlargement of the spleen, dyspepsia, dropsy, J un .
dice, and all kinds of constitutional debility and de
rangement of the system, are speedily remedied by
these invaluable medicines. These valuable amidols!
remed.es were discovered by Dr. I. T. llendereon, and
have been successfully tested by some of the best Phy
sicians in the South, and by r thousands of other per
sons.
The medicines are wholly Vegetable, and are harm
less under anv circumstances. The principal ingredi
ents are entirely new remedies, used by no other person
in any form as a medicine.
In malarial diseases, they act as an antidote against
the poisonous etlects of impure air, and require pre
ceding preparation of the system, asthey comprist nh*
Cathartic, Diaphoretic, Sedative and Tonic princi
ples ; thus accomplishing a desideratum in the irtai
inent of these diseases, Icng sought for belore the (lit
covery of these medicines.
All who hare used Quinine, (the best remedy here
tofore known for intermittent fever.) must say it is
neither certain or lasting in its effects.
Quinine, in many instances, from febrile excitement
and gastralgia, and cephalic disturbances, is inad
missible. Lut the Lureka Medicines can be used un
uer any circufiistances or condition of the system,
v. here a tonic, purge, or diaphoretic is needed, with the
happiest effect. The tonic mildly acts on the bowels,
carrying of the muco billious matter collected there ;
correcting the action of the liver and spleen, and as
sisting nature to throw of the impediments to a healthy
action ol the body by natural remedies, calling into
action suspended animal laws; thereby removing the
causes and effects of disease through the natural chan
nels of the body.
All that is asked for the wonderful medicincsis a lair
trial, which will satisfy all of their unparale'led vir
tues. Their fame is built upon their own efficacy, and
a comparison with all other remedies is challenged.—
I physicians are requested to use the Eureka Tonic and
Nepenthoan Pills, as (hey would any other tonic, with
any previous preparation of the system they please,
and tuey will lie convinced that they are superior to
Quinine, and the whole catalogue of tonicE used as in,
termittents.
i heir use is admissible at any time, even when thfr
patient has the highest fever. For sick head ache or
obstructed ‘menstruation, they have no equal. For
particulars, see tonic directions.
