The fall was found to be nitle f(1 „. -.^r7 r ter the
I it this time there was level the fall was
[ ‘ r *^ t o*b e , feet and one-tenth. Add to this
’ hi feet head to be obtained from the dam, and we
j' k f 20 feet fall. From this we mast deduct 2
f , t 3 inches for the inclination of the bed of the canal,
order th l the water may preserve a proper velocity
!” paging through it. This inclination will bring it for-
in a forty feet canal with a velocity of 101 feet
f m j n ute. This leaves us 17 feet 9 inches. If we
allow 3 feet 9 inches for the ordinary fluctuations
,he water in the river, that is if the water wheels
, rt , k> placed that the water may rise 3 feet 9 inches
what the surface of the river was on the 23d
or rise five feet above low water works, without
<ci ,joning back water, then we have 14 feet fall re-
This is equal to a power of 330 horses.
|t ia cotnpated that the cost of wood (j>ine) per n
---jm necessary to afford a power equal to one horse at
j.i p,r cord, is $44, and attendance for an engine ot
.•h„rse power, equal to sl3 pet- horse power. We
then $57 as the cost or value of a h<>rse power.
j|,.re then we have the measure ol the value of your
p-nposed improvement or $1 per annum, equal to
, - per cent on the cost.
|t should be born in mind also that the cost of the
I water wheel, gearing, etc. for a given power, is but about
I ~e fourth that of a steam engine with its gearing.
[n order to decide upon the size of th canal neces-
M rv to develope the power of the river, the stream has
I carefully guaged, after having first ascertained its
I ; rW t range or low water mark. This point or stage is
I w jJ to have been reached but once in the last 10 years,
I m: in 1539. The result of these observations shows,
that the quantity of water wlneli pusses a given point at
the l<>we~t stages of the river, is 21.671 fc tor 169.30't
jt-tllons per minute. This in connection with the fall is
,qua! to a power of 352 Imrses. or an excess of 22 hor-
Kiover the capacity of the canal under the most unfa
vorable circumstances.
A power of 330 horses will drive 20,000 mure and
frame spindles, an equal number of each, spioning No.
]0 to 20 yarns, with the necessary compliments of
looms, etc. From some estimates which I have notice I
Otis would be equal to tile production of 33.600 yards
Ttr day, or 10.080.000 annum. According to the
,son estimates, it will give employ ent to 660 opera-
It is farther estimated, that 1000 spindles draw
i population of 100 persons, operatives and their fami
|ifli which in this ease would be equal to 2,000 persons.
ft will he noticed that the power afforded by the pro*
p,,e'l canal would be sufficient for four factories of 5000
spindles each.
A canal of 20 feet in width would cost $88,313 24,
i IM ] would afford a power of 169 horses. A canal of 1 0
fn-t in width would cost $69,580 26. and would afford
i power of 91 horses. And the cost of the canal here
in contemplated is $125,732 33.
Turbine, or any of the most approved horizontal
*he> Is. would it i* evident, be preferable under the cir
cumstances attending this canal The property they
possess of running in back water, which freshets would
sometimes occasion, with a very slightly diminished ef
fect, awards them this preference, for by increasing the
flow of water in the canal during moderate freshets,
the difference of level or head might still to some ex
tent be preserved.
I have reason to believe from information I have r<-
Crivrd, though I have no personal knowledge on tin
subject, that by extending the canal three mile* high- r
up the river to the ‘“Wicked Shoals'* the fall would
Ik- greatly increased if not doubled. If so, the addi
tional cost would not probably be in proportion to the
distance. The e<**t of dam. pier heads. &c. would re
main the same, while the cutting, (the average of which
js now 14 feet ) would he reduced bv bringing in th<-
watrr on a higher leve'. This i* a m t’er that wi'l
deserve at'ention. should tin* plan of building a canal
now or hereafter be carried nut. See the accompany

Having purchased at the lowest prices, he feels assured that

tentionally interfering with the claims of the other respectable
Book Merchants in Macon, would respectfully solicit a share
of public patronage, believing that a moderate competition, in
stead of reducing the profits, will, by fostering a literary taste
greatly enhance them.
A good article of Whole Bound Blank Books be will sell at

DR. STRONG’S
PECTORIAL STOWACH PILLS.
A remedy for Coughs, Colds, Catarrh, Croup, Whooping
Lough, Asthma, Consumption, Nervous Diseases, Dyspep
sia, Erysipelas, Salt Rheum, Disease of the Heart, Fevers
of all kinds, (tbstrucled and painful Menstruation, Inflam
mation and Pain in the Chest, Back and Side, and all dis
eases arising from a deranged state of the Stomach, and
to relieve the distress and had feelings from eating too hear
ty food in the week and dyspeptic habits.
These Pills act as an expectorant, tonic, and aperient, and
are designed to supercede the use of the various cough mix
tures in the form of Expectorants, Syrups, Balsams, and aar
saparillas of the present day. being whatthe public have long
needed, and put at such a low price that all will be able to ob
tain them. One box of these pills which costs but 25 cents
possesses four times the power in curing the diseases for which
they are recommended, than the high priced one dollar bottles
of any ot the expectorants, syrups, balsams, nr sarsaparillas
now before the public—and a fair trial of them will convince
any one of the truth of this statement.
They possess properties peculiarly a.lapted to restore the
lungs and vital organs to a healthy state. They loosen and
discharge all the morbid secretions, assist greatly the expecto
ration, and render the lungs free from that effete matter which
characterizes all those diseases; and the proprietor feels au
thorized to stale, from personal observation, and witne&sing
the astonishing effects of these pills on a multitude of cases,
that there is not another remedy in the whole Materia Medica
ca|iable of imparting such healing properties to the lungs and
vital organs as these pills. •
Each box contains 25 Pills--Price 25 cents.
ALSO
DR. STRONG’S
COMPOUND SANATIVE PILLS.
WARRANTED TO BE PURELY VEGETABLE.
Health is too important to be trifled with; yet we find per
sons every day who give the most careful attention to their
ordinal}’ pursuits, yet neglect that which is far more impor
tant to them, their ke-uth. If these invaluable Pills were kept
on hand by every family, and restored to on the first symptoms
of disease, they would save many a valuable life, sacrificed
by delay. They are a most superior medicine in the cure of
all Bilßous Complaints, Chills and Fever, Dys|iepsia, Costive
ness, Liver Complaint. Jaundice,Sick Headache,Scrofula, Loss
of Appetite, and all lingering diseases.
They purify the blood, equalize the circulation, resiore the
liver, kidne} sand other secretory organs to a healthy tone and
action; and from their tonic effects, prevent that general pro
stration and debility of the stomach and intestine- that is so
often the consequence of a free use of other purgative medi
cines. Hence as a Female Medicine, they have no equal, and
when taken according to the directions, they never failto cure
the very worst cases of Pile*, after all other remedies fail.—
They act in concert with nature, and assist her in her efforts
to overcome disease; they must, therefore, exert an influence
all-powerful in preserving and restoring the general health.—
They have been used in every form of disease, and in various
climates, and their excellence proved, in cases where medical
skill and many boasted remedies had failed to afford relief.—
Diseases that seemed the most opposite in their nature, have
yielded with equal facility to their use, and cures have been
effected in cases that seemed beyond hope. Nor is it strange
that such should be the case, for all diseases, however different
!> named, disorganize the secretions, and impairs the vitality
of the blood.
A medicine, therefore, that is purely vegetable, and aids na
ture to resiore these important functions to a healthy state,
must prove of service in ail forms of disease. Dr. Strong’s
Compound Sanative Pills possess these rare virtues, and are
theiefore not a mere purgative medicine, hut a general remover
of disease, a pu.ifier of the blo.#d, and a strengthener of the
system.
Those who have once tried these Pill* never afterwards feel
willing to be w ithout them, which is sufficient proof of their
good qualities.
Each box contains 25 Pills. Price 25 cents.

tive Pills. They are for sale in Macon, by Paine & Nesbit, E.
