Jelia Thompson’s Daughter.
BY PIKEBE CAREY.
[The following clever parody on Thomas Campbell’s
‘.Lilal of ‘Lord U Ilia’s daughter,’ we clip from a Vir
jHgihia paper.]
A fellow near Kentucky’s clime,.
Ciits‘Boatman, do not tarry,
And l'il give thee a silver dime
To row us o'er the ferry.’
I ‘Xow who would cross the Ohio,
This dark and stormy water ?’
I “ ‘O, lam this young lady’s beau,
And she John Thompson’s daughter.
We’ve fled before her father’s spite,
With great precipitation,
And should he find us here to-night,
I'd lose my reputation.
Thcv've missed the girl and. purse besides,
Ilis horsemen hard have pressed me,
And who will cheer my bonny bride
If yet they shall arrest me V
Out sp ke the boatman then in time,
‘ You shall not fail, doll t tear it ;
I’ll go, not for your silver dime,
Hut for your manly spirit.
And by my word, the bonny bade
In danger shall not tarry,
For though a storm is coming on,
I’ll row you o'er the ferry.’
IP: tliis the wind more fiercely rose,
The boat was at the landing,
And with the drenching rain their clothes
Grew wet where they’ were standing.
But still, as wilder rose the wind,
And us the night grew drearer,
J ust back a piece came the police,
Their trampling sounded nearer.
‘O, haste thee, haste !’ the lady cries,
‘lt’s any thing hut funny •,
Ml leave the light of loving eves,
But in t my father’s money!’
And still they hurried in the face
Os wind and rain unsparing;
John Thompson reached the landing place,
Ilia wrath was turned to swearing.
For, by the lightning’s angry flash,
Ilis child he did not discover J
One lovely hand held all his cash,
And one was round her lover !
‘Comeback, come’ back,’ he cried in wo,
Across the stormy water,
‘But leave the purse, and you may go,
My daughter, O, my daughter.’
’Tuts vain ; they reached the other shore,
(Such dooms the Fates assign us,)
The gold he’d piled, went with liis child,
And he was left there, jninus.
Dodging Tin: Responsibility. --“ Sir,
said l'iei vfaces, tha lawyer, to ail unwilling wit
ness, “ Sir, do you say upon your oath, that
Blimpkins is a dishonest man ! ’
“ 1 did'nt say he was ever accused of being
an honest man, did 1 /”
“Does the Court understand you to say, Mr.
Pipkins, that the plaintitV’s reputation is bad !
inquired the Judge, merely pu'ting the question
to keep his eyes open.
“I didn’t say it was good, I reckon.
“•Sir,” said” Fiery faces, “Sir-r, upon your
oatli—mind upon your oath —you say that
Blimpkins is a rogue, a vidian and a thiel?
“You say so,” was Pip’s reply.
“ Haven’t you said so?”
Why you’ve said it,” said Pipkins, “whats
the use of my repealing?”
“Sir-r!’’ thundered Fiery faces, the Deinos
thean thundererofThumbtown, “Sir, l charge
you upon you sworn oath, do you or do you not
say, Blimpkins stole things?”
o, Sir,” was the cautious reply of Pipkins.
*‘.l never said Blimpkins stole things; but I do
. say—• ht-'s got a way of finding things, that no
body has lost!’ ”
“Sir,” said Fieryfaces, “you can retire;”
and the Court adjourned.

JEW DAVID’S HEBREW PLASTER.
OpilE great remedy for Rheumatism, Gout, Pain in the Side
_L Hip, Back, Limbs and Joints ; Scrofula. King’s Evil, W bite
Swelling, Hard Tumors, Stiff Joints and all fixed pains whatev
er.
Where this Plaster is applied, Pain cannot exist. It has
been beneficial in cases of weakness, such as Pain and Weak
hess in the Stomach, Weak Limbs, Lameness, Affection o: the
Spine, Female Weakness, &c. No female, subject to pain or
weakness in the back or sides, should he without it. Married
ladies, in delicate situations, find great relief from constantly
wearing the Plaster.
The application of the Plaster between the shoulders has been
found a certain remedy for Colds, Coughs, Phthisic, and Affec
tion of the Lungs in their primary stages. It destroys iuflama
tion by perspiration.
The following commendation is from an agent residing at
Trentsn, Tenn,:
Trenton. Gibson Cos. Tenn. Nov. 7, ’4O.
Messrs. Scovil & Man —Gentlemen : The Hebrew Plaster
is becoming popular in this, section. There is a lady in this
county who says she would not be without the Plaster for five
hundred dollars a year. She was aillicted for some time with
an enlargement of the spleen, which gave her great pain. The
swelling and pain had extended up nearly to the armpit, and
occasionally she could hardly breathe. 81 ie was confined for
a considerable time, during which site was attended by some of
our best physicians, but they gave no relief. Slie procured a
box of the Hebrew Plaster, and it relieved Her almost immediate
ly, and now sin- keeps a supply of it on hand constantly.—
These facts you are at liberty to use as you think proper—Un\v
are substantially true. Respectfully, yours,
JESSE J. WELLS.

PECTORIAL STOMACH PILLS.
A remedy for Coughs, Colds, Catarrh, Croup, Whooping
Cough, Asthma, Consumption, Nervous Diseases, Dyspep
sia, Erysipelas, Salt Rheum, Disease of the Heart, Fevers
of all kinds, Obstructed and painful Menstruation, lnflam
mation and Pain in the Chest, Back and Side, and all dis
eases arising from a deranged state of the Stomach, and
to relieve the distress and bad feelings from eating too hear
ty food in the week and dyspeptic habits.
These Pills act as an expectorant, tonic, and aperient, and
are designed to supercede the use of the various cough mix
tures iu the form of Expectorants, Syrups, Balsams, and Sar
sapariilas of the present day.being what the public have long
needed, and put at such a low price that all will he able to ob
tain them. One box of these pills which costs but 23 cents
possesses four times the power in curing thediseascsfor which
they are recommended, than the high priced one dollar bottles
of any of the expectorants, syrups, balsams, or sarsaparillas
now before the public—and a fair trial of them will convince
anyone of the truth of this statement.
They possess properties peculiarly adapted to restore the
lungs and vital organs to a healthy state. They loosen and
discharge all the morbid secretions, assist greatly the expecto
ration, and render the lungs free front that effete matter which
characterizes all those diseases: and the proprietor feels au
thorized to state, from personal observation, and witnessing
the astonishing effects of these pills on a multitude of cases,
that there is not another remedy in the whole Materia Mcdica
capable of imparting such healing properties to the lungs and
vital organs as these pills.
Each box contains 25 Pills--Price 25 cents.
ALSO
DR. STRONG’S
COMPOUND SANATIVE PILLS.
WARRANTED TO DE PURELY VEGETABLE.
Health is too inqmrtantto be trifled with; yet we find per
sons every day who give the most careful attention to their
ordinary pursuits, yet neglect that which is far more impor
tant to them, their health. If these invaluable Fills were kept
on hand by every family, and restored to on tlic first symptoms
of disease, they would save many a valuable life, sacrificed
by delay. They arc a most superior medicine in the cure of
all Billions Complaints, Chills and l'ever, Dyspepsia, Costive
mss, Liver Complaint. Jaundice,Sick Headache,Scrofula, Loss
of Appetite, and all lingering diseases.
They purify the blond, equalize the circulation, restore the
liver, kidneys and other secretory organs to a healthy tone and
action ; and from their tonic effects, prevent tliatgeneral pro
stration anil debility of the stomach and intestines that is so
often the consequence of a free use of other purgative medi
cines. Hence asa Female Medicine, they have no equal, and
when taken according to the directions, they never fail to cure
the very worst cases of Piles, after all other remedies fail.—
They act in concert with nature, and assist her in her efforts
to overcome disease ; they must, therefore, exert an influence
all-powerful in preserving and restoring the general health.—
They have been used in every form of disease, and in various
climates, and their excellence proved, in cases where medical
skill and many boasted remedies had failed to afford relief.—
Diseases that seemed the most opposite in their nature, have
yielded with equal facility to their use,and cures have been
effected in cases that seemed beyond hope. Nor is it strange
that such should be the case, for all diseases, however different
ly named, disorganize the secretions, and impairs the vitality
of the blood.
A medicine, therefore, 1 hat is par chi vegetable, and aids na
ture to restore important functions to a healthy state,
must prove of service in ail forms of disease. Dr. Strong's
Compound Sanative Pills possess these rare virtues, and are
therefore not a mere purgative medicine, but a general remover
of disease, a purifier of the blood, and a strengthener of the
system.
Those who have once tried these Pills never afterwards feel
willing to be without them, which is sufficient proof of their
good qualities.
Each box contains 25 Pills. Price 25 cents.

these invaluable medicines. These valuable antidotal
remedies were discovered by Dr.l. T. Henderson, and
have been successfully tested by some of the best Fliy
sicians m the &outk, and by thousands of other per
sons.
The medicines are wholly Vegetable, and are harm
less under any circumstances. The principal ingredi
ents are entirely new remedies, used by no other person
in any form as a medicine.
111 malarial diseases, they act as an antidote against
the poisonous effects of impure air, and require no pre
ceding preparation of tlie system, as they comprise the
C athartic, Diaphoretic, Sedative and Tonic princi
ples ; thus accomplishing a desideratum in the treat
ment of these diseases, long sought for before the dis
covery of these medicines.
.All who have used Quinine, (the best remedy here
tofore known for intermittent fever,) must say it is
neither certain or lasting in its effects.
Quinine, in many instances, from febrile excitement
and giistrulgia, and cephalic disturbances, is inad
missible. Jlilt the Eureka Medicines can he used un
der any circumstances or condition of the system,
where a tonic, purge, ordiaplioretic ia needed, with the
happiest effect. The tonic mildly acts on the bowels,
carrying of the inuco billious matter collected there ;
correcting the action of the liver and spleen, and as
sisting nature 10 throw olthe impedimenta to a healthy
action ol the body by natural remedies, calling into
action suspended animal laws; thereby removing the
causes and effects of disease through the natural chan
nels of the body.
All tliat is asked for the wonderful medicines is a fair ■
trial, which will satisfy all of their unparalelled vir
tues. Their fame is built upon their own efficacy, and
a comparison with all other remedies is challenged.—
Physicians are requested to use the Eureka Tonic and
Nepenthean Pills, as they would any other tonic, with
any previous preparation of the system they please,
and they will be convinced that they are superior to
Quinine, and the whole catalogue of tonics used as iu
termittents.
I heir use is admissible at any time, even when the
patient bus the highest fever. For sick head ache or

may be commensurate with your merits is the earnest w ish of
yours truly, GILLIS WRIGIIT.

chronic forms of disease, through the mail, the facilittesof

the cheap postage system, which will be greatly increased by
the recent Act of Congress.
