Naiavt Bishop's Concerts. —This cekbra

the present week, with two of her splendid Lyric En
n-stainmenW. iCSn Monday night, besides several op
,.r;lt;c pieces which she performed with brilliant effect,
(.he sail” “Home Sweet Home,” “The Harp that once
through” Tara'-s .Mails” and one or two oilier popular
ballads, in a style that we have never heard equalled.
In the mad sceue es the Opera of Lucia di Lammer

art of which we did ,not sujqxwo the human voice ca
pable. It was a wsgaificeat performance, though the
style of the music xva* not such as we can fully appre

.cluding piece, La PasdU*, sung in Castilian and in
the costume of a Mexican Girl was done to the life.
(In Wednesday evening, Madame B. gave ns‘John

r.;.no Forte, as few men besides, in this age, can do.
For this place, and at this season of the year, when
,i r> ,j, ;,s tig as cart-wheels to most folks, the at
tendance on Madame B's Concerts was fair, and suffi
ciently remunerative, we suppose, to pay expenses and
leave a little surplus.
X. B. While on this subject, we would speak of a
practice fi-queritly indulged in by some of the audience
who attend Concerts, of loud talking and whispering
■during the most exquisite passages of tile musical per- .
f .nuance. On Monday evening, the whole audience
were excessively annoyed by a bushy-taeed youth, who
kept up a running lire of loud talk with a young lady
who honored Idm with her company, on the occasion,
and who, if we judged aright, was herself so chagrined
by Ills conduct as to he likely to decline his escort for
the future, to any such public place. So palpable a
breach of good manners has no excuse, especially when
it is the resalt of an over-weening self complacency on
the part of the individual committing the trespass up
on the rights and feelings of a public assembly, who
hare paid for the melody of sweet sounds, and no, foi
the ill-timed chattering of a babbler ‘.
Hit him astilin ! —The following argumentuni
ad hnminein is addressed by the South Side \ a. Demo
crat to the Editor of the Columbus Times:—
“That the free-soil wing of tho Democratic party
should be reluctant to pledge themselves to the faithful
execution of the fugitive slave law, is precisely what
one would expect ; but it is ready astonishing, that
any Southern Democrat should participate in such a
feeling of discontent and sullen obstinacy. Strange
however, as it may seem, Mr. Forsyth of Georgia, edi
tor of the Columbus Times, a gentleman who Inis been
.distinguished for his unyielding support of Southern
rights aud his determined opposition to Northern ag
gression, counsels the Democratic party against incor
porating into the Baltimore platform, a resolution of
.acquiescence in the fugitive slave law I There is some
reason why a man who originally regarded the Coin
. promise measures as an outrage upon the South, should
refuse now to recognize them as just and proper in
principle—indeed to do this, would be the grossest in
consistency and self-stultification. It docs seem how
ever, to be very irrational and superlatively punctilious
in a Southern rights Democrat to declaim against a
resolution of acquiescence in the fugitive slave law !
Mr. Forsyth’s confidence in the wisdom of the policy
which lie recommends to the Democratic party, will
hardly be increased bv the fact that it meets the full
approval of the New York Evening Post—the organ
.of the free-soil Democracy.’’
* * * *
’ The Democratic party should scorn to make terms
With tho free soilers. The principles of the party
should be boldly declared, and if they choose to take
offence, let them pack off to Buffalo, and rear a plat
form upon which they can stand. The fugitive slave
law should be endorsed by the Baltimore Convention,
ni *d if the adherents of Van Buren feel disposed, they
may go in search of a candidate of their own kidney,
but never let it be said that the Southern Democracy
consented to an abandonment of their own cherished
principles and their faithful friends, for the sordid pur-
P' se of purchasing tho support of free-soil allies in a
race for the spoils.”
How they Like it. --Sec an article from the
Columbus Enquirer in to days paper, adverse
to the Fillmore movement, and read also the
billowing paragraph from the Washington Ga.
Gazette;
Should this movement attain anything of a
tangible form, we shall give the reasons of our
faith at length, hut we here take occasion to en
ter our solemn protest against what we believe
‘'*th due deference, to he a scheme of blunder
tag lolly. We hope no such project will he en
tertained tor a moment by the patriotic Union
bigs ot Georgia. Nothing can he made by

Weekly News & Southern Home Journal.
We invite attention to the prospectus of W. Y. Paxton,
(Publisher of of the Daily, Tri-weekly and Weekly-
News of Charleston,) setting forth the claims of his
W eekly journal to the support of Southern families and
readers. From a specimen of the News before us,
we are prepared to recommend the same as a valuable
and interesting journal and worthy of extensive patron
age. Besides the literary contents of the weekly, it
contains all the important intelligence of the Daily,
without the advertisements. It is also printed with
great neatness on the first quality of news paper.

American Steamship Humboldt.
Baltimore, May 24.
Ihe United States Mail steamship Humboldt, from
Havre via Southampton, arrived at New York last
night, bringing foreign intelligence one day later. A
storm prevailing at the time of her arrival, prevented
the immediate transmission of the news South.

two thousand five hundred bales of which were pur

ADDITIONAL PER HUMBOLDT.
The steam ship British Queen from Liverpool for the
Mediterranean put into Holyhead oil Sunday the 9th
inst. on fire, and all efforts to extinguish the flames
were fruitless. The British Government had recog.
tiized the Duke of Gluckxburg ns presumptive heir to
the Danish throne. The British mail steam ship
America arrived at Liverpool on the Sunday the 9th
inst. The bullion in the Bank of England had in
creased to twenty millions.
Ihe fetes that were to take place on the lOtli of
May, in Paris, absorbed all attention. It was believed,
however, that the Empire would not be proclaimed on
the occasion. A steamer had left Toulon for Algiers
with 300 prisoners*.

Alabama. —Messrs. White and Abercrombie,
Members of C< tigress from Alabama have declined ac
ting as Fillmore Compromise Deb-gates to the National
W hig Convention of the IGtli June. They prefer not
to mingle with Freesoilers and Abolitionists, and they
will be sustained in this by a large majority of the peo
ple of their districts. The new Fillmore movement in
Mobile District has resulted in throwing off the mask
of Union and rallying under the “regular old-fashioned
M iiig” banner. They are more honest than tlu-Geor
gia Filmorites, who still repudiate the name of Whig
and cleave to that of “Constitutional Union,”
