Two Kinds of Riches.
A link* boy set by 1 is mother. He looked lor gin
the fire and wjts silent. Then, as the deep thought
began to pass away, his eye grew bright, and he spoke:
“ Mother, I wish to be rich/*
“Why do you wish to he rich, my son
And the child said, ‘ Because every one praises the
rich. Every one inquires after the rich. The stran
ger at our table, vesterdav, asked who was the rich
est man in the village. At school there is a boy who
docs not love to learn. He takes no pains to say well
his lessons. Sometimes he speaks evil words. But
the children blame him not, for they say he is weak
thy.*’
The mother saw that her child was in danger of
believing wealth might take the place of goodness, or
be an excuse for indolence, or cause those to be held
in honor who led unworthy lives. So she asked him,
“V\ hat is it to be rich?’ And he answered, “I do
not know. Yet tell me how 1 may become rich, that
all may ask after me, and praise me.”
The mother replied, “To become rich, is to get
money. For this you must wait until you arc a man,
Then the boy looked sorrowful, and said, “Is there
not some other way of being rich, that I may begin
now ?’’
Site answered, “The gain of money is not the only,
nor the true wealth. Fires may burn it, the floods
drown it, the winds sweep it away, moth and rust waste
it, and the robber make it his prey. Men are wear
ied with the toil of getting it, but they leave it behind
at last. They die and carry nothing away. The
soul of the richest prince goetli forth like that of the
wavside begsar, without a garment. There is another
kind of riches which is not kept in the purse but in the
heart. Those who posess them are not always praised
by men, but they have the praise of God.”
Then said the boy, “ May I begin to gather this kind
of riches now, or must I wait till lam a man ? The
mother laid her hand upon his little head and said,
“ To day, if ye will hear 11 is voice ; for lie hath prom
ised that those who seek early shall find.'’
And the child said, “Teach me how I may become
rich before God.” Then she looked tenderly on him,
and said, “Kneel down every night and morning, and
ask that in your heart you may love the dear Saviour,
and trust in Him. Obey Ilis word, and strive all the
days of your life to he good, and to do good to all.
Though you may be poor in this world, you shall be
rich in faith, and an heir of the kingdom of heaven.’

Sally you seein to be ignorant in geography ; I will
examine you in gramtner. Take the sentence, “ mar

riage is a noun because it is a name. And though
Slinks;ware asks what’s a name, and says that a rose
by any other name would smell as sweet, yet marriage
being a noun, and therefore a name, shows that the
rule established by the Bard of Avon has at least one
exception. For marriage is certainly of very great im
portance, and being a noun, and therefore a name,
ergo, there is something in a name.’’ ‘'Good!—Well,
what is the case of marriage V “ Don’t know sir.’ “De
cline it, and see.” “Don’t feel at liberty to decline
marriage after having made Bill the promise I have. I’d
rather conjugate.”
Old but Good.—The following is old but good.
The father of it is dead ; but the child has life and
pitch ill it that never will die:
“I say, boy, stop that ox.”
“I haven’t got ita stopper, sir.”
“Well, head him then.”
“He's already headed, sir.’
“Confound your impertinence ; turn him.’’
“He’s light side out already, sir.’
“Speak to him, you rascal, you.’

men out of every hundred in New York, believe that
two thirds of the human race are going to perdition,
and yet among all in that city, she says, thete is not one

A queer looking customer inserted his head

“Certainly,” replied the auctioneer, “you

“ Well then,’’ said the wag, walking off, “I

FECTORIAL STOMACH PILLS.
A remedy for Coughs, Colds, Catarrh, Croup, Whooping
Cough, Asthma,Consumption, Nervous Diseases, Dyspep
sia, Erysipelas, Malt Rheum, Disease of the Heart. Fevers
of all kinds, Obstructed and painful Menstruation, lnflam
mation and Pain in the Chest, Hack and Side, and all dis
eases arising from a deranged state of the Stomach, and
to relieve the distress and bad feelings from eating too hear
ty food in the week and dyspeptic habits.
These Pills act as an expectorant, tonic, anil aperient, and
are designed to supercede the use of the various cough mix
tures in the form of Expectorants, Syrups, Balsams, and Sar
saparillas of the present day.being whatthe public have long
needed, and put at such a low price that all will be able to ob
tain them. One box of these pills which costs but -5 cents
possesses four times the power in curing the diseases for which
they are recommended, than ttie high priced one dollar bottles
of any of the expectorants, syrups, balsams, or sarsaparillas
now before ttie public—and a fair trial of them will convince
any one of the truth of this statement.
They possess properties peculiarly adapted to restore the
lungs and vital organs to a healthy state. They loosen and
discharge all the morbid secretions, assist greatly the expecto
ration, and render the lungs free from that effete matter which
characterizes all those diseases; and ttie proprietor feels au
thorized to stale, from personal observation, and witnessing
the astonishing effects of these pills on a multitude of cases,
that there is not another remedy in the whole Materia Medica
capable of imparting such healing properties to the lungs and

DR. STRONG’S
COMPOUND SANATIVE PILLS.
WARRANTED TO BE PURELY VEGETABLE.
Health is too important to be trifled with; yet we find per
sons every day who give the most careful attention to their
ordinary pursuits, yet neglect that which is far more impor
tant to them, their health. If these invaluable Pills were kept
on hand by every family, and restored to on the first symptoms
of disease, they would save many a valuable life, sacrificed
by delay. They are a most superior medicine in the cure of
all Billious Complaints, Chills and Fever, Dyspepsia, Costivc
ness, Liver Complaint. Jaundice,Sick Headache,Scrofula, Loss
of Appetite, and all lingering diseases.
They purify the blood, equalize the circulation, restore the
liver, kidneys and other secretory organs to a healthy tone and
action ; and from their tonic effects, prevent thatgeneral pro
stration and debility of ttie stomach and intestines that is so
often the consequence of a free use of otlier purgative medi
cines. Hence as a Female Medicine, they have no equal, and
when taken according to the directions, they never failto cure
tiie very worst cases of Piles , after alt other remedies fail.—
They act in concert with nature, and assist her in tier efforts
to overcome disease ; they must, therefore, exert an influence
all-powerful in preserving and restoring the general health.—
They have been used in every form of disease, and in various
climates, aud their excellence proved, in cases where medica
skill and many boasted remedies bad failed to afford relief.—
Diseases that seemed the most opposite in their nature, have
yielded with equal facility to their use,and cures have been
effected in cases that seemed beyond hope. Nor is it strange
that such should be the case, for all diseases, however different
ly named, disorganize ttie secretions, and impairs the vitality
of the blood.
A medicine, therefore, that is purely aids na
ture to restore these important functions to a healthy state,
must prove of service in at) forms of disease. Dr. Strong’s
Compound Sanative Pills possess these rare virtues, and are
thetcforc not a mere purgative medicine, but a general remover
of disease, a purifier of the blood, and a strengthener of the
system.
Those who have once tried these Tills never afterwards feel
willing to be without them, which is sufficient proof of their
good qualities.

could be more conclusive?
‘lt is seldom we permit ourselves to occupy a space in these
columns to speak in praise of any article in the patent medi

by the use of atiy medicine whatever, we consider it as our
right, if not our duty, tegivea simple statement of facts, that
others may, in like manner, be benefit ted. The case which
has induced us to [>eti this article was that of a young lady
of our acquaintance, who by frequent exposure to tbe
night air, contracted a Cold which settled on the Lungs
before its ravages could be stayed. (This occurred two years
ago this winter.) Various remedies were used, but with very
little effect or benefit. Tbe Cough grew worse, with copious
expectoration, and the sunken eye, and pale, hollow cheek
told plainly that pulmonary disease was doing its worst on her
delicate frame. The family physician was consulted, and al
though he would not admit to the young lady that she really
had the consumption, >et lie would give no encouragement as
to a cure. At this crisis her mother was persuaded to make
use of a bottle of Dr. Rogers’ Compound Syrup of Liverwort
and Tar, and we are happy to state she was perfectly cured
in less than three months by this medicine alone, after even
hope was destroyed. It is useless to comment on sueli a case
as this, fur the simple truth will reach where polished fiction
never can. If any doubt the authenticity of this statement,
let them call at this office.— U. ti. Military and .Yacal Argus ,

Testimonies of the New York Press.
From the N. Y. Courier, Aug. 13, 1850.
1 )r. Rogers’ Syrup of J.ierrwort and ‘J'ar. —\Ve have heard
several important cures recently effected by this excellent
medicinal preparation, and in one instance that came under
our observation, we can speak confidently. One of our em
ployees, who had suffered severely from a long standing cold,
during the past week commenced the tise of this medicine,
and his cold Itas entirely disappeared.
From the New York Mirror, Sep. 2, 1850.
Ijirrrwort and Tar. —Os the virtues of Dr. Rogers’ Cough
Medicines prepared from the above articles, it is needless now
to speak; its efficacy in speedily curing Coughs, Colds, and oth
er lung complaints, which too frequently, if neglected, result
in consumption, is too well established in public confidence
to need eulogy now.
From the New York Despatch, Aug. 25, 1849.
YVc have heretofore taken occasion to give our testimony
in favor of the curative properties of Dr. Rogers’ Compound
Byrup of Liverwort and Tar, and would here repeat the ad
vice already given, for all persons who are afflicted with Con
sumption, or any of the premonitory symptoms, touiake a tri
al of Dr. Rogers’ preparation.
