Mr. Stephens at Concert Hall.
We were prevented by pressing engagements from
} being present at the performance which came off on
the Webster boards, on Saturday last, but have learned
from many eye and ear witnesses, that, taken altoge>
ther, it was as poor a show as sensible men ever atten
ded. The speaker divided his subject into three gene
ral heads of Pierce, Scott and Webster, rightly divi
ding it, fas he doubtless snpposed) and giving a portion
to each in due season. H e was death on Conventions,
and in fovor of the Independent Ticket dedicated to
A\ ebster and Jenkins. To Pierce he objejted a little
i and a very little—not enough to prevent him support
ing him, under certain circumstances. To Scott he
objected, because Seward and Greely and Governor
Johnson supported him and Gen. Scott did not come
out. in season, on the Compromise measures. He dis
credited the speech of Scott to the Mississippi Delega
tion and the letter of Scott to Clay, but said nothing
•bout Cleveland's testimony and that of Graham, Hill
ycr, &q. Scott s speech at Castle Garden was ig
nored, because the Fugitive Slave bill was not then in
cluded in the measures of Mr. Clay ! In short Mr.
Stephens, was off his feet , entirely. Never did he
make * poorer effort. His political allies and oppo
nents, V\ bigs and Democrats. Union men and South
ern Rights men, all unite in the expression of opinion,
that it was not more remarkable for its disregard of
tu ts, than lor the lameness and dishonesty with which
his subject was treated. His tirade against Scott was
bitter ..nd abusive, and the whole speech was a disgust
ing display of disappointed ambition and se!f-i.n”por
tance—all of which would have been spared us. had
General Scott not failed to answer a letter of the speaker,
touching his views on the Compromise. The Journal
says that his speech was a ‘calm and dispassionate sur
vey of the positions and prospects of two great national
parties of the country,” but how dispassionate, may be
gathered from the libellous asseni .nos the speaker that
(ten. Scott ‘lud very little if any opinions on the Com
promise,’ but if any, that they ‘were shaped and con
trolled by s-ronger feelings and principally by his de
sire to be elected President.’ Such a base insinuation
is as false as it is eontemptible. It is a slur upon the
patriotism and intelligence of Gen. Scott, which we
repel with scorn.
The Atlanta liaiherin^.
Thi* meeting advertised for Atlanta, on the 14th
came off according to announcement. There was a
goodly number of people collected to do honor to the
occasion, so memorable in the annals of the Mexican
campaign, but it is due to truth and candor to say,
there was not much of the ‘ mass’ about the affair.—
The time was unpropitious—the sessions of the Supe
rior Courts of Georgia being on hand in the several
counties of Cass, Green, Harris, Butts, Gwinnett,
Crawford and Polk, and requiring the attention of
lawyers, jurors, parties and witnesses. The refusal of
the Railroad Companies to make the usual reduction of
fare also operated against the occasion—but the prin
cipal reason for the smallness of the crowd is doubtless
owing t-> the fact that General Apathy is chief in com
mand in the field of Georgia politics, at the present
time. There is too little interest felt in the important
subject—and this, not in reference to the cause of Scott
alone, but likewise in the cause of Pierce and Web
ster. \\ edo not believe it possible for either party,
in the Suite to get up, between this and the election, a
mass meeting of 1000 persons! The‘great” gather
ing of the Fire-Eaters in this city in ISSO did not much
exceed that figure, and yet the most extraordinary ex
citement prt vailed, and the greatest exertions were
made to swell the number to 20,000 ! The fact i*
‘Mass meetings” are fizzling out and we advise our
friends to forego all intention of gelling up such. Get
up y>ur county barbacues and gather your neighbors
to hear the trutii from Scott s|K.-akers, but never at
tempt to do big things when you can't accomplish your
wishes. And if our opponents think they can do bet
ter than we can, let them try it. The ‘proof of the
pudding is chewing the bag.’—so go ahead, Piercers
and Terlium Quids, and let us see what a big mass you
can conglomerate, at one month’s notice !
But we are digressing. Though our meeting was
a small one of several hundred persons, yet it was a
good meeting. It was a real Seott ‘love feast’ which
delighted our hearts. The lion. Win. C. Dawson was
there and gave us an able speech, lie was preceded
by Maj. Harris of Baldwin, in a capital address upon
the claims of Gen. W infield Seott to the Presidency.
From the patient attention given to these gentlemen,
we have no doubt sonic good was effected. Indeed we
understood that three Webster men were converted to
the truth and went on their way rejoicing, like Saul of
Tar.-us, having seen a great light which they had not
seen before. So much for that day and occasion.

many certificates given in their fovorny the Am of the Medi

I have examined Mr. Thomas's Breast Glass. tnJ had it tried
under my inspection. I think very well of it, and believe it
will answer for which it was intended better than anything
with which I am acquainted. C. R. GILMAN. M. D.

I hereby certify that I have made trial of Mr. Thomas’ Cap

I bare had repeated occasions to observe the action of the
Cupping Glass and Artificial Leech and Breast Glass, invented
by Mr. Thomas, and am highly pleased with them. The ad
vantages they possess over the ordinary aparatu* are numer
ous and important The ease and rapidity with which their
object is effected, their neatness and readiness of applies!Kin.
their simplicity and apparent durability, alt recommend them
strongly to the notice of those who may require them, la ev
, err case ia which I have employed them in the Hospital, their
effect has been perfectly satisfactory. C. M. ALLEN. M. D.
