The Democratic Candy-Date.
BY &lAHOBU.NO BARD” NO. 2,
Ttvft 4 -” Yankee Doodle.”
I .is teil L'X-is wlltle l sing.
Anti iell you all so handy t
About a certain candy-date,
And his ‘‘stick of candy. ’ v-
Yankee D#odle General Pierce,
Yankee Doodle dandy,
We will lick the W biggies with
Our Stick of Candy.
General Pierce, when quite a youth,
lie was sent to College,
There he got his ‘‘erudition”
And a heap of knowledge.
His Father who was Governor,
Was writing on a table;
He came across so hard a word,
To spell it, wus'ntable.
He tried it once, he tried it twice,
And got himself in a splutter;
Frank says he, spell ‘'but'’ for me,
Says Frank “B-U-T. —-But-er.’’
One day a riding long the road,
He saw a boy a eryiug;
Atonee quite touched, he was thereby,
His heart was sympathising.
He stopped his horse, and asked the boy—*
“Although an entire stranger ‘ —
What is the cause of your great grief?
Are yoa in any danger?
The boy I<iked up with tearful eyes,
With grief bis heart oVrflowing;—
‘‘My Play-mates, they hive each a stick*
Os Candy they’re enjoying.
My parents they alas are poor—
Too young to work though handy—
So I indeed, ain't able for,
To buy a stick of Candy.’
With Charity, Benevolence,
This great Men's heart, was filled,
llis hands into his pockets thrust,
And out a CE ST he pulled.
“Take this, my son, go buy a stick,
A stick o! Sugar Candy;
A nd when you get to be a man,
You’ll vote for me so handy.”
The next great deed, of this great man—
He would’nt vote a Fip, sir,
To smooth htr passage to the grave,
The widow of‘‘Oid Tip,” sir.
A General next he turned up—
And don’t you think me partial—
While I rehearse his valiant deeds,
And Uis achievements martial.
About to charge the Mexicans*—
But bis borse it stumbled,
He could’nt keep bis balance then,
So off ills horse he tumbled.
Kext day he thought to have a chance,
To be in history painted;
Alas ! alas ! for human hopes,
He did go and h & fainted.
Another battle lie was in,
Or rather would have seen, sir,
If he had travelled with more haste,
And then in time had been, sir.
This is tlie last of martial deeds, —
Apd also of my story—
Os this, chivalrie General, .
Who and had enough of Glory.
This hist'ry of Brave Geu'ral Pierce,
Is true in word and letter;
We run him for our Candy-date,
Because vve hav’nta belter..
Now W biggies listen to your fate—
You’ll get licked so handy,
If you attempt to gi'e us ‘‘soup,”
We will give you Candy.
Yankee Doodle Gen’ral Pierce,
Yaukee Doodle Dandy,
We will lick the V\ higgles with
Our ‘‘Stick of Candy.’
Fanny Fern on .llairiiuuiiy.
Shouldn't I liK.e to make a bonfire of all the ‘flints
to Yuan” Wives, 1 ‘Mamed Woman's Erieod, 1 &c.,
and throw in the authors after them. 1 have a littie
neighbor who believes all they tell her is gospel truth,
and lives up to it. The minute she sees her husband
coming up street, site makes for the door, as if she
hadn't another minute to live, stands in the entry with
her teeth chattering in her head, until he gets all his
coats and mufflers, and overshoes, and vvhat-do'ca 1-
’ms ofT, then chases round (like a eat in a fit,) alter the
boot-jack; warms his slippers, and puts ‘em on, and
dislocates her wrist carving at the tabie for fear it will
tire him.
Poor little innocent fool i she imagines that's the
way to preserve his affections. Preserve a fiddlestick!
The consequence is he’s sick of the sight of her ;
snubs her when she asks him a question, and after he
has eaten Iter good dinners, takes himself off as soon
as possible, bearing in mind the old proverb that too
nmuh of agood thing is good for nothing.
Now, the truth is just A his, and 1 wish all women
on earth had but one ear in common, so that I could
put, this little bit of gospel into it. Just so long as a
man isn’t quite as sure as if lie knew certain, whether
nothing on earth could ever disturb your affection for
him, lie is your humble servant, but the very second
he finds out, (or thinks he does,) that he has po-ses
skin of every iuch of your heart, and no neutral terri
tory—he will turn in his heel and march off, whistling
Yankee Doodle.
Now, its no use to take your pocket han.lkerehief
and go snivelling round the house, with a pink nose
aud red eyes; not a bit of it I If you have made
the interesting discovery that yon were married for a
sort of dpper-fervant, or housikeeper, just rill that
place aud naother, keep your temper, keep all his
strings and buttons, auistraps on, and then keep him
at a distance, us a housekeeper should—them’s my
sentiment-* ’ 1 have seen one or-two men ia my life,
who could bear to be loved (as a woman with a soul
knows how,) without being spoiled by it, or converted
into a tyrant —but they are rare birds, and should be
caught, stuffed aud sent to Barnuin ! Now as the
ministers say, ‘1 11 close with an interesting incident
that came under my observation.’
Mr. Fern came home one day when I had such
a crucifying headache that I eouldu’t have told whether
I was mat tied or single, and threw ail old coat in my
lap to mead. Well, 1 tied a wet bandage over my
forehead, ‘left all flying,’ and sat down to it, lie might
as well asked me to make him anew one; however, I
lined the sleeves, mended all the button holes, and
sowed on new buttons down the front, and all over the
coat tail, when finally it occurred to me, (I believe it
was a suggestion of Satan,) that the pocket might need
mending ; so 1 turned it inside out, and what do you
think 1 found ? A love letter from him to my dress
maker ! I dropped the coat, I dropped the work-bas
ket, I dropped tlie buttons, I dropped the baby, (it was
a.female, and I thought it just as well to put her out
of future misery,) aud then I hopped iuto a chair, in
front of the looking glass, and remarked to the voting
woman 1 saw there, ‘'Fanny Fern, if —you—are
sver—~-Buck — a — confounded-—fool — again’—and s
and I wasn't ! !
A Ghostly Wish.
‘I w ish- 1 was a ghost, blamed if I don’t,’ said a poor
oovey, the other night, as he -nt soliloquizing in the cold.
‘ They goes wherever they please toll free ; they don't
owe nobody nothing, and that's, a comfort. Whoever
heard tell of a man wdo had a bill against a ghost? No
body. They never buy hats and vitials, nor liquor, nor
has to saw wood nor run arrears as I do. Their shirts
never gets dirty, nor their trow sere out at the knees as
Fever heard tP-ll on. Ghosts is the only independent
I knows on. I railly wish I was one,’

PEGTORIAL STOMACH PILLS.
A remedy for Coughs, Colds, Catarrh, Croup, Whooping
Cough, Asthma,Consumption, Nervous Diseases, Dyspep
sia, Erysipelas, Salt Rheum, Disease of the Heart. Fevers I
of all kinds, Obstructed anil painful Menstruation. Inflam
mation and Pain in the Chest, Back and Side, and all dis
eases arising from a deranged state of the Stomach, and
to relieve the distress and bad feelings from eating too hear
ty food in the week and dyspeptic habits.
These Pills act as an expectorant, tonic, and aperient, and
are designed to supercede the use of the various cough mix
tures in the form of Expectorants, Syrups, Balsams, and riar
saparillas of the present day.being whatthe public have long
needed, and pot at such a low price that all willbe able to ob
tain them. One box of these pills which costs but 25 cents
possesses four times the power in curing the diseases for which
they are recommended, than the high priced one dollar bottles
of any of the expectorants, syrups, balsams, or sarsaparillas
now before the public—and a fair trial of them will convince
anyone of the truth ofthis statement.
They possess properties peculiarly adapted to restore the
tunes and vital organs to a healthy state. They loosen and
discharge all the morbid secretions, assist greatly the expecto
ration. and render the lungs free from that effete matter which
characterizes all those diseases; and the proprietor feels au
thorized to stale, from personal observation, and witnessing
the astonishing effects of these pills on a multitude of ca-es,
that there is not another remedy in the whole Materia Medica
capable of imparting such healing properties to the lungsand
vital organs as these pills.
Each box contains 25 Pills--Price 25 cents.
ALSO-
DR. STRONG’S
COMPOUND SANATIVE PILLS.
WARRANTED TO BE PURELY VEGETABLE.
Health is too important to be trifled with; yet we find per
sons every day who give the most careful attention to their
ordinary pursuits, yet neglect that which is far more impor
tant to them, their health. If these invaluable Pills were kept
on hand by every family, and restored to on the first symptoms
of disease, they would save many a valuable tile, sacrificed
by delay. They are a most superior medicine in the cure of
all Billious Complaints, Chills and Fever, Dyspepsia, Costive
ness, Liver Complaint. Jaundice,Sick Headache,Scrofula, Loss
of Appetite, and all lingering diseases.
They purify the blood, equalize the circulation, restore the
liver, kidneys and other secretory organs to a healthy tom- and
action ; and from their tonic effects.prevent tbntgenern! pro
stration and debility of the stomach and intestines that is so
often the consequence of a free use of other purgative medi
cines. Hence as a Female Medicine, they have no equal, and
when taken iccordi ng to the directions, they never fail to cure
the very worst, cases of riles, after all other remedies fail.
They act in concert with nature, and assist her in her efforts
to overcome disease; they must, there fore, exert an influence
all-powerful in preserving and restoring the general health.—
They have been used in every form of disease, and in various
climates, and their excellence proved, in cases when) medica
skill and many boasted remedies had failed to afford relief. —
Diseases that seemed the most opposite in their nature, have
yielded with equal facility to their use,and cures have been
effected in cases that seemed beyond hope. Nor is it strange
that such should be the case, for all diseases, however different
ly named, disorganize the secretions, and impairs the vitality
of the blond.
A medicine, therefore, that is purely vegetable, and aids na
ture to restore these important functions to a healthy state,
must prove of service in ail forms of disease. Dr. Strong's
Compound Sanative Pills possess these rare virtues, and are
therefore not a mere purgative medicine, but a general remover
of disease, a purifier of the blood, and a strengthener of the
system.
Those who have once tried these Piils never afterwards feel
willing to be without them, which insufficient proof of their
good qualities.
Each box contains 23 Pills. Price2s cents.

arising from an impure state of the Itlood, prove it to be the
purest and moat useful preparations of Sarsaparilla that is made.
Those who have used the various preparations of Sarsapa

dozen bottles as it is generally made.
That it might be more particularly adapted to professional
use, nothing but the pure Sarsaparilla has been used, that for
different diseases, physicians might combine or prescribe with
it, such articles as they might consider most appropriate in

DR. ROGERS’
Liverwort and Tar,
4 SAFEand ceitain cure for Coughs, Colds, Croup, Asth
i V mn, Consumption of the Lungs, Spitting of'Bio.id,
Bronchitis, Hooping Cough, and all Pulmonary Affections.
A Lovely \ oung Lady Cured of Consumption.
VW~ The following is from the pen of Win. H Levison,
Esq. the distinguished editor of the United States Military
and Naval Argus, date New York, January 26, 1850. What
could be more conclusive?
‘lt is seldom vve permit ourselves to occupy a space in these
columns to speak in praise of any article in the patent medi
cine way ; but when we see the life of a fellow-creature saved
hy ibe use of any medicine whatever, we consider it as our
right, if not our duty, te give a simile statement of facts, that
others may,in like manner, be benefitted. The case which
has induced us to pen this article was that of a young lady
of our acquaintance, who by frequent exposure to the
night air, contracted a Cold which settled on the Lungs
before its ravages conld be stayed. (This occurred two years
ago this winter.) \ arious remedies were used, but with very
little etlect or benefit. Tbe Cough grew worse, with copious
expectoration, and the sunken “ye, and pale, hollow’ cheek
told plainly that pulmonary disease was doing its worst on her
delicate frame. The family physician was consulted, and al
though he would not admit to the young lady that she really
had the consumption, vet he would give no encouragement as
to a cure. At this crisis her mother was persuaded to make
use of a bottle of Dr. Rogers’ Compound Syrup of Liverwort
and Tar, and vve are happy to state she was perfectly cured
in less than three months by this medicine alone, after even
hope was destroyed. Uis useless to comment on such a case
as this, for the simple truth will reach where polished fiction
never can. If any doubt tbe authenticity of this statement,
let them call at this office.— V. S. Military and Xaval .irgus, i

Testimonies of the New York Press.
From the N. Y. Courier, Aug. 13, 1859.
Dr. Rogers’ Syrup of f.inrirort and Tar. —\Ye have heard
several impor'nnt cures recently effected by this excellent
medicinal pieparation, and in one instance that came under
our observation, we can speak confidently. One of our em
ployees, who had suffered severely from a long standing cold,
during the past week commenced the use of this medicine,
and his cold has entirely disappeared.
From the New York Mirror,Sep.2, 1850.
L irrrwort nml Tar. —Of the virtues of Dr. Rogers’ Cough
Medicines prepared from the above articles, it is needless now
to speak ; its efficacy iu speedily curing Coughs, Golds, and oth
er lung complaints, which too frequently, if neglected, result
in consumption, is too well established in public confidence
to need eulogy now.
From the New York Despatch, Aug. 25, 1849.
Me have heretofore taken occasion to give our testimony
in favor of the curative properties of Dr. Rogers’ Compound
Syrup of Liverwort and Tar, and would here repeat the ad
vice already given, for all persons v\ ho are afflicted with Con
sumption, or any of the premonitory symptoms, to make a tri
al of Dr. Rogers’ preparation.
